Phytoplankton in the ocean has an important role in forming the base of food chain,  responsible in primary production. Its abundance and number of phytoplankton species will indirectly affect the level of water’s fertility. This study aimed to determine the presence of phytoplankton as bio-indicators of water quality in terms of abundance, diversity index, uniformity index, and saprobic coefficient in coastal waters of South Sumatera. The study was conducted on May 2013 - February 2014, at ten stations during high and low tides. Phytoplankton samples were taken vertically using plankton nets,  cone-shaped with a diameter of 30 cm, length 100 cm and mesh size 30 μm. The study found 41 genera of phytoplankton, consisted of family Bacillariophyceae (26 genera), Dinophyceae (7 genera) Cyanophyceae (7 genera) and Chlorophyceae (1 genus). The highest number of genera was recorded while low tides in November (24 genera), and the lowest was on May while high tides (16 genera). The highest abundance of phytoplankton was recorded in August during high tides (2,68 x 107 cell.m-3), and the lowest was in May during high tides (6,59 x 105cell.m-3). The diversity index (H'),  the uniformity index (E), and the dominance index (D) ranged between 0,64–3; 0,15–0,71 and 0,15–0,83 respectively.  Keywords: phytoplankton, abundance, diversity index, South Sumatera coast.

Abstract The availability of nutrients in the marine environment is very important for primary production and as indicator of the health condition in waters. East Nusa Tenggara Province is one of the province that has a potential fishery, especially in Maumere Bay of Sikka Regency. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the water quality and spatial distribution of nutrients in that area. This study aims to determine water quality, assess water trophic status, and determine limiting factors in Maumere Bay. Sampling was conducted in August 2017 at 14 research stations and 1 daily station. The results showed that the relationship between DIN, DIP, and DSi at the daily station was a weak correlation. DIN reaches maximum concentration after 8 hours, whereas DIP and DSi reach maximum concentration after 12 hours. The average DIN, DIP, and DSi were 1.082 μmol L−1, 0.123 μmol L−1, and 4.544 μmol L−1, respectively. The average DIN/DIP ratio was 11.554. It can be concluded that Maumere Bay is an oligotrophic area and phosphate as a limiting nutrient for phytoplankton growth.

Within these contexts, the Paciência River, located on the Island of Maranhão stands out for its local importance, mainly for contributing its waters to the recharge of the underground springs, source of public supply of several districts of São Luís, capital of the state. However, this river has been compromising the quality of its waters, a consequence of the process of use and occupation of the spaces in its basin. Highlighting as one of the main problems related to the quality of fluvial environments, eutrophication, which consists of the process in which the body of water acquires high levels of nutrients (phosphates and nitrates), is a determinant indicator of water quality. In this sense, the objective of this work was to characterize the water quality and trophic status in the Paciência river basin through the physico-chemical parameters, showing the most compromised stretches according to the values reached in the analyzes. The results of the analyzes were compared with CONAMA No. 357/05 which indicated a worrying situation regarding the quality of the water at the place of study. Keywords: Water quality; Eutrophication; Island of Maranhão. RESUMENBrasil tiene gran disponibilidad de agua dulce en sus manantiales. The system “Neue Donau” functions as a control system for high waters of the river Danube and is an important recreational area for many people. Water quality and trophic status of the water body is thereforeof prime importance. The high nutrient concentrations of the river Danube (P-tot 238±41µg/l, N-tot 2.53±0.78 mg/l) reach the system via groundwater seepage. Present conditions in the basin of Neue Donau are,as a result of this nutrient in-flux,eutrophic to hypertrophic. Average values during the summer period have declined from 366 µg/l total phosphorus to 78 µg/l, and from 86 µg/l chlorophyll-a tol7µg/l between the years 1985 and 1988. However, a dam which is planned in the river at Vienna will permanently raise the water level of the river thus increasing the the groundwater flow in the direction to the Neue Donau and therefore the nutrient input which will enhance trophic conditions in the impoundment. Since macrophytes play an important role in one part of the system macrophyte management together with measures along the river are some of the suggested strategies to keep the system Neue Donau at acceptable trophic conditions and good water quality.

Seagrasses are unique marine flowering plants that play an important ecological role by yielding primary production and carbon sequestration to the marine environment. Seagrass ecosystems are rich in organic matter, supporting the growth of bio-medically important epi and endophytic microorganisms and harbor rich marine biodiversity. They are an essential food source for endangered Andaman state animal Dugongs. Seagrasses are very sensitive to water quality changes, and therefore they serve as ecological bio-indicators for environmental changes. The benthic components in and around the seagrass beds support a significant food chain for other Micro and organisms apart from fishery resources. The epiphytic bacterial communities of the leaf blades support the sustenance against the diseases. Recent reports have shown that the loss of seagrass beds in tropical and temperate regions emphasizes the depletion of these resources, and proper management of seagrass is urgent. The decline of seagrass will impact primary production, biodiversity, and adjacent ecosystems, such as reefs. Therefore, restoring the seagrass meadows could be possible with effective implementing management programs, including seagrass meadows in marine protected areas, restoration projects, seagrass transplantation, implementation of legislative rules, monitoring coastal water quality and human activities in the coastal zone. Lacunas on the seagrass ecosystem management in Andaman & Nicobar Islands are addressed.

Phytoplankton is the primary producer whose existence depends not only on the nutrient. The eastern part of Segara Anakan waters experienced changes where the decline in quality which received input from organic and inorganic wastes and residential, industrial and factory wastes of Holcim and Pertamina factories. The purpose of this research is to study the water quality and to study the relationship between water quality and abundance of phytoplankton at the eastern part of Segara Anakan. The result showed that Water quality in Segara Anakan waters in the eastern part of Cilacap consists of several parameters that beyond the quality standards according to the Keputusan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup No. 51 of 2004 such as pH, Nitrate, Ammonia, Phosphate, and TSS. Water temperature is a physical factor which has a strong negative correlation with the abundance of phytoplankton, followed by TSS as a physical factor which has a positive correlation. The chemical factor which has a positive correlation with abundance are TDS, Nitrite and pH, followed by Phosphate, Salinity, Ammonia, and Nitrate which has a negative correlation with the abundance of phytoplankton. Key Words: Environmental factor, phytoplankton, Segara Anakan, Spatial variation, temporal variation.
