Appropriate water management associated with CSG production is key to regulatory approval and public acceptance of CSG projects. Policy in Queensland makes injection of treated produced water the government's main and preferred option for CSG water management to ensure protection of the Great Artesian Basin as a groundwater resource. In 2010, Australia Pacific LNG started an extensive program of aquifer injection trials across its Surat and southern Bowen Basin CSG fields. The purpose of the trials is to assess the technical and economic feasibility of aquifer injection. The trial program comprises nine different injection targets across four locations and three aquifers. Target depths range from less than 100 m to about 1,500 m. A process of desktop study-exploration-testing has been followed. To date, Australia Pacific LNG has completed all exploration activities. These included about 1,200 m of coring, an extensive suite of geophysical logging and post processing, hydraulic testing and physical, geochemical and mineralogical analyses. This extended abstract describes the results of the exploration activities and the decisions made based on the acquired data. Comparisons are made between the different sites and aquifers. Results of the testing are discussed in the context of technical and economic feasibility of a large-scale injection scheme.

Abstract Access to affordable clean energy source as stipulated in UN SDG goal number 7 is important for the development and socio-economic well-being of people, the need for proper assessment of resources to achieve this goal is indisputable. The goal of this study is to assess the economic feasibility of utilizing organic fraction of Municipal Solid Wastes (MSWof) using a case study of 21 Local Government Areas (LGA) or Authority for Anambra State of Nigeria for waste to energy project. The quantity of organic fraction of MSW, energy recovery and optimum number of plants at the various LGAs was estimated. The result of the study indicates that about 198 tons maximum value of MSWof can be generated daily in Aguata LGA, with electric energy potential value of 545MW. The number of plants for the LGAs ranged from 10 to 50 and from 3 to 12 for small and medium scale plants. A large scale plant of about 50m3 can possibly be installed at all the LGAs, with a maximum of 4 plants in Idemili and Aguata LGA. The economic assessment based on Net Present Value (NPV) criteria shows poor economic feasibility for small scale plant, while NPV was positive for medium and large scale plants. The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) ranged from 0.32 to 0.94, with a general increase from small scale to large scale economic feasibility. It is suggested that the autonomy of the various LGAs in the country should serve as a major motivation in adopting bio-energy projects independently, and this study will serve as a decision toolkit in the appropriate scale to be adopted.

Given the enormous impact of buildings on energy consumption, it is important to continue the development of net-zero energy districts. Opportunities exist for energy efficiency and renewable energy on a district level that may not be feasible in individual buildings. Due to the intermittent nature of many renewable energy sources, net-zero energy districts are dependent on the energy grid. The novelty of this work is to quantify and optimize the economic cost and grid independence of a net-zero energy district using the National Western Center (NWC) in Denver, CO, USA as a case study. The NWC is a 100+ ha campus undergoing a major redevelopment process with a planned 170,000 m2 of total building space, an emphasis on sustainability, and a net-zero energy goal. Campus plans, building energy models, and renewable energy performance models of on-site solar, biomass, and thermal renewable energy sources are analyzed in multiple energy scenarios to achieve net-zero energy with and without on-site energy storage. Levelized cost of energy (LCOE) is optimized as a function of variables defining the energy and economic relationship with the grid. Discussion herein addresses trade-offs between net-zero energy scenarios in terms of energy load, LCOE, storage, and grid dependence.

The family described in this article provides an unusual opportunity to relate findings from genetic, histological, electrophysiological, psychophysical, and rehabilitative investigation. Although the total number evaluated is large (49), the known, living affected population is smaller (14), and these are spread from age 20 to age 59. As a result, the findings described above are those of a large-scale case study. Clearly, more data will be available through longitudinal study of the individuals documented in the course of this investigation but, given the slow nature of the progression in this disease, such studies will be undertaken after an interval of several years. The general picture presented to the audiologist who must rehabilitate these cases is that of a progressive cochlear degeneration that affects only thresholds at first, and then rapidly diminishes speech intelligibility. The expected result is that, after normal language development, the patient may accept hearing aids well, encouraged by the support of the family. Performance and satisfaction with the hearing aids is good, until the onset of the speech intelligibility loss, at which time the patient will encounter serious difficulties and may reject hearing aids as unhelpful. As the histological and electrophysiological results indicate, however, the eighth nerve remains viable, especially in the younger affected members, and success with cochlear implantation may be expected. Audiologic counseling efforts are aided by the presence of role models and support from the other affected members of the family. Speech-language pathology services were not considered important by the members of this family since their speech production developed normally and has remained very good. Self-correction of speech was supported by hearing aids and cochlear implants (Case 5’s speech production was documented in Perkell, Lane, Svirsky, & Webster, 1992). These patients received genetic counseling and, due to the high penetrance of the disease, exhibited serious concerns regarding future generations and the hope of a cure.
