Accounting is a routine activity. Through repetition, the scribes of the Ebla Archives (Syria, 24th cent. BCE) have been able to record thousands of transactions. They organized and stored accounting data referred to more than thirty years of the Palace G activities. The recurring textual patterns characterizing the administrative corpus are a byproduct of this routine-based approach. The ability to see recurring patterns in the textual record is fundamental when dealing with an administrative corpus: however, this ability fails when the patterns are buried in data. In this paper, I argue that theoretical aspects of data mining are not far from theoretical and methodological tenets of the historical approach. Data mining is a useful technique for the identification of document clusters and relevant information which would otherwise remain hidden. Furthermore, textual pattern recognition is critical to address topics such as the study of society: belonging to a category of complex problems, any socio-historical investigation requires dealing with multiple interconnected variables. However, not all research topics require such an approach. I define the line beyond which digital approaches are extremely useful (if not indispensable) as 'visibility threshold’. The position of this interface is relative and subjective.

In modern warfare, the most important innovation to date has been the utilisation of information as a  weapon. The basis of successful military operations is  the ability to correctly assess a situation based on  credible collected information. In today’s military, the primary challenge is not the actual collection of data.  It has become more important to extract relevant  information from that data. This requirement cannot  be successfully completed without necessary  improvements in tools and techniques to support the acquisition and analysis of data. This study defines  Big Data and its concept as applied to military  reconnaissance, focusing on the processing of  imagery and textual data, bringing to light modern  data processing and analytics methods that enable  effective processing.

Forests owned by the state in the Czech Republic are managed by Forests of the Czech Republic, state enterprise with its headquarters in Hradec Králové. The private companies (established during the economic reform in 1992 and privatization in 1994) carry out silvicultural and logging activities in state forests on the basis of contracts. This study is focused on forest enterprises (contractors); the current situation of business environment in the Czech Republic was studied. There have been found 38 236 forestry entrepreneurs in the Czech Republic, and divided according to legal title, to numbers of employees onto groups on the basis of size and availability of their accounting data in the first part of the article.The second part deals with data mining from accounting by a process known as a Financial statement analysis, which has to make an informed decision for owners or managers of the enterprise. Ratio analysis is regarded as the basic methodical instrument of financial analysis. Ratio analysis effectively summarizes multiple financial statement categories into few relative indices of performance and financial position. It is powerful method for managing with the complexity and volume data presented in financial statements. The relative indices converse financial statement categories into measures and it helps control for differences across companies and across time. This article contains chosen forestry contractors and describes the most useful economic indicators (ratios) and takes into account possible utilization in the sector generally.

The research topics of the 39 papers published in the International Journal of Information Technology and Decision Making (IT&DM) in 2009 can be classified into three major directions: decision support, multiple criteria decision making, and data mining and risk analysis. The Editor-in-Chief, on behalf of the editorial board and advisory board, highlights the key ideas of these contributions. The seven papers in first issue of 2010 IT&DM are also introduced.
