This research is motivated by the results of previous research which shows that students' mathematical reasoning ability is not as expected. One of the lessons to improve the ability of mathematical reasoning is inductive learning. The purpose of this research is to know the improvement of students' mathematical reasoning ability as a result of inductive learning. This study is a quasi-experiment that implements two lessons namely inductive learning and conventional learning. Population in this research is a student of the junior high school in Regency of West Bandung. Sampling was done by purposive sampling and obtained two classes as research sample. The research instrument used is the test of mathematical reasoning ability. Based on the result of the analysis, it can be concluded that the improvement of mathematical reasoning ability of students who get inductive learning is better than students who get conventional learning.

Kata Kunci: pendekatan open-ended, pendekatan problem solving, kemampuan penalaran, kemampuan pemecahan masalah, kemampuan komunikasi matematis THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OPEN-ENDED AND PROBLEM SOLVING APPROACH IN MATTER OF FLAT SIDE CONSTRUCT IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Abstract The aims of this research are to decide the effectiveness and the comparison of the effectiveness of open-ended and problem solving approach toward matter of flat side construct lesson viewed from achivement of reasoning ability, problem solving and mathematics communication. The abilities that must be mastered by high school students according to the demands of the 2013 curriculum include reasoning. Students who have good reasoning abilities make it easier to understand mathematics. But in reality there are still many students who have low mathematical reasoning ability, seen when they have difficulty solving math problems. This research objective is to prove the habit of solving open-ended problems that can improve the mathematical reasoning ability of junior high school students based on the level of initial mathematical ability: high, medium, and low. The study used an experimental method with a "One-Group pre-test post-test design". Randomly, selected 77 grade VII students of SMP Negeri in Bekasi as a sample. The prerequisite test shows that each level of data comes from groups that are normally distributed and homogeneous. The results showed normal gain, both overall and level showed improvement. Based on the t test obtained p value of 0.000 < 0.005, meaning this study can prove student habits in solving open-ended problems when learning mathematics on triangles and quadrilateral, can improve students' mathematical reasoning abilities.

Problem-solving ability is one of the objectives to be achieved in mathematics. This capability is not only used in solving problems related to the field of mathematics, but can be used in solving the problems faced by students in the day-to-day life. One way to develop this ability in mathematics learning is learning by problem posing approach. This approach gives the opportunity for students to formulate questions that are simpler than the available problems. This research aims is to improve the ability of mathematical problem solving of students of grade VIIA, Junior High School of Muhammadiyah 9 Yogyakarta through learning “problem solving”. This is a classroom action research; with the subject of the research were seventh grade students of Junior High School of Muhammadiyah 9 Yogyakarta. The results of study showed that the approach can enhance the ability of posing a problem-solving mathematical, grade VII A Junior High School of Muhammadiyah 9 Yogyakarta.

Keywords : Problem posing, problem solving ability
