In the frame of the random matrix theory, it was shown, that the relaxation of the projection of the initial plane wave with the wave vector q is described by the equation of motion with the memory function which corresponds to the complex dynamical Young modulus E(ω). In the harmonic scalar model of displacements with the absence of energy dissipation, the Ioffe-Regel crossover arises universally in amorphous systems with the dimension d≥3. Vibrations above the Ioffe-Regel crossover are related to the diffusive nature and can be described by the diffusion equation with the damping Γ(q)∝ q².

For a mean-field ferromagnetic Ising system subject to a rotating transverse external field and a bath, the hysteresis loop area is studied by a complete analytical solution of the equation of motion of magnetization. In any cycle, the loop area is proportional to the field when the field strength is small and oscillates when the field strength is strong. The oscillation comes from the modulation of the behavior of magnetization with a frequency related to the field strength, which is caused by interaction between the Ising system and the bath. In the oscillation regime, the loop area can be negative except in the first cycle.

Using the method of a priori energy estimates, energy dissipation is proved for the class of hereditary fractional wave equations, obtained through the system of equations consisting of equation of motion, strain and fractional order constitutive models, that include the distributed-order constitutive law in which the integration is performed from zero to one generalizing all linear constitutive models of fractional and integer orders, as well as for the thermodynamically consistent fractional Burgers models, where the orders of fractional differentiation are up to the second order. In the case of non-local fractional wave equations, obtained using non-local constitutive models of Hooke- and Eringen-type in addition to the equation of motion and strain, a priori energy estimates yield the energy conservation, with the reinterpreted notion of the potential energy. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Advanced materials modelling via fractional calculus: challenges and perspectives’.

Differential equation of motion of energy-dissipation structure is established in the paper. In order to decouple the equation ,the equation is be reduced based on complex mode theory.Take a 10-storey shearing frame for an example ,selecting elcentro and taft wave as seismic motions ,structural roof displacements and relative storey displacements are be calculated and the effect of energy-dissipation dampers is evaluated.

The performance of friction dampers to mitigate waves and earthquakes in tower-type offshore platform is investigated in this paper. Taking the offshore platform of TOWER-1 as an example, the equation of motion of offshore platform structure under earthquake and wave loads was established. The response reductions of offshore platform structure by different peak earthquakes were analyzed. The results show that the responses of the tower-type offshore platform structure under wave and earthquake could be effectively reduced by friction damper, and the energy dissipation ability of the friction damper differs in the different floors. The friction dampers give good response reductions in different peak earthquakes, and the response reductions of displacement are better than those of acceleration.

We investigate a monomial inflationary scalar model in the braneworld Randall–Sundrum type II model. In the high-energy regime, we determine the slow-roll parameters as well as the perturbation spectrum of the model. According to the known observational data, the corresponding results and the solutions of the equation of motion on the brane are discussed.
