The Private Sector: Taking a Role in the Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse for Young People

For many years the main support of the private sector for drug abuse prevention programs came through money resources channeled through general agencies of community assistance, such as the United Way. In the 1970s, the approach began to change and diversify as the negative social impact of drugs became more visible and far-reaching. Throughout all strata of society and within the workplace itself, more lives than ever before were affected by the abuse of drugs. A national problem was identified, highlighted by deaths due to overdose of celebrities, respected community members, and/or their children. The abuse of dangerous drugs, no longer confined to the nation's slums and minority communities, proliferated with the more tolerant social attitudes of the 1960s and 1970s. It soon became evident that not to take a stand would only make the problem worse, and that prevention would be far less costly in both human suffering and financial funding than trying to treat problems after the fact. On a different front, studies of manpower productivity revealed that the abuse of chemicals by employees was costly, and not to acknowledge and do something about it even costlier. In response, some companies designed and implemented Employee Assistance Programs, while others insisted on broader insurance coverage to support the in- and out-patient treatment of chemically dependent employees and their families. Still others looked for ways they could become involved in preventing the problem in the first place. Employee health or fitness centers were one result of this growing interest. Active support of projects designed to prevent drug use among young people was another.

Constructive confrontation was originally the central strategy in work-based programs to deal with problem drinking employees. The broadening of these programs to employee assistance programs, coupled with their rapid growth and diffusion, has been accompanied by the medicalization of employee performance problems and the professionalization of means for handling such problems. These trends, together with ideologies based in organizational management and the value orientations of American society, are barriers to supervisory use of constructive confrontation. Data from a 1981 national survey of external program consultants reveals continuing attitudinal support for constructive confrontation. Other attitudes of these consultants point however to the strong need for deliberately designed support systems for the encouragement of supervisory use of constructive confrontation.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the social impact that two events, the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Clipsal 500, have on young residents (16-19 years old) of Adelaide. The purpose of this paper is to examine how young people participate in these events and how this affects their sense of involvement in the event and contributes to their identity development. Design/methodology/approach – A mixed methods approach was adopted in which focus groups and questionnaires were conducted with secondary school students. As an exploratory study, focus groups (n=24) were conducted in the first stage of the research. The results of the focus groups were used to develop a questionnaire that resulted in 226 useable responses. The final stage of the research explored one event in further depth in order to determine the influence of different participation levels. Findings – This study found that young people demonstrated more involvement in the Adelaide Fringe Festival and their identities were more influenced by this event. Further investigation of the Adelaide Fringe Festival also indicated that level of participation affects the social outcomes gained, with those participating to a greater degree achieving higher involvement and increased identity awareness. This is demonstrated through a model which aims to illustrate how an event impact an individual based on their role during the event. Originality/value – This paper applies two leisure concepts in order to analyse the impact of events. Activity involvement is a concept which examines the importance of the activity in the participant's life. Also of importance to young people is how activities contribute to their identities, especially because they are in a transitional period of their lives.

The history of the employee assistance movement has its roots in the worker's health movement of the early 1900s and the employee alcohol assistance programs of the 1940s. The author discusses the important role alcohol assistance programs played in the evolution of current employee assistance programs and makes a very important distinction between programs that deal with alcohol-related problems and those that are currently being used for drug-related problems. The issue is raised of the fine line between using urinalyses as a method of rehabilitation and using it as a form of policing.

Abstract. Soccer’s current social impact makes it a very powerful tool for the comprehensive training of those minors who come to practice it. It is especially valuable among young people of school age, who may otherwise lose motivation and begin to frequent places that lead them away from their studies. For young people with their dreams, soccer can focus their attention and contribute to their overall education. In this work, we present the results of a program carried out with three soccer teams in the city of Cádiz, Spain. For each team, we analyzed six aspects of interest from the comprehensive training program of the players: academic training; fair play; health, hygiene and nutrition; training for coaching staff; training for parents and social responsibility. The experience was relevant and positive for players, parents, and teams. The results were very encouraging. The interest on the part of the team officials, players, and parents was clear.Resumen. El impacto social que produce el fútbol constituye una herramienta muy potente para la formación integral de los menores que lo practican. Es especialmente valioso entre la juventud en edad escolar, que podrían de otra manera perder la motivación y comenzar a frecuentar lugares que les alejen de sus estudios. Para la juventud, con sus sueños, el futbol puede enfocar su atención y contribuir a su educación general. En este trabajo, presentamos los resultados de un programa llevado a cabo con tres equipos de fútbol en la ciudad de Cádiz, España. Para cada equipo, se han analizado seis aspectos de interés desde este programa de formación integral de los jugadores: formación académica; juego limpio; salud, higiene y nutrición; entrenamiento del cuerpo técnico; entrenamiento de los padres y madres y responsabilidad social. La experiencia fue relevante y positiva para jugadores, familiares y equipos. Los resultados fueron muy alentadores. El interés por parte de los equipos, jugadores, padres y madres fue claro.

This paper discusses a model of providing a specialized employee assistance program, with psychological services that are far-reaching and beyond what traditional employee assistance programs offer. Three main areas in which services are deemed especially critical include working with the athletes to improve their sports performance using various mental skills techniques, providing personal counseling, and impacting the organization at an organizational level. Also discussed is the author’s current role with the team and management, both during the preseason and the official season. Further, the author evaluates his effectiveness as a sport psychology consultant and the problems encountered as well as the importance of developing and maintaining proper boundaries within the organization. In conclusion, issues related to the goodness of fit between the professional sport organization and the sport psychology consultant are addressed.
