Abstract Epigenetic variation has the potential to influence environmentally dependent development and contribute to phenotypic responses to local environments. Environmental epigenetic studies of sexual organisms confirm the capacity to respond through epigenetic variation. An epigenetic response could be even more important in a population when genetic variation is lacking. A previous study of an asexual snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, demonstrated that different populations derived from a single clonal lineage differed in both shell phenotype and methylation signature when comparing lake versus river populations. Here, we examine methylation variation among lakes that differ in environmental disturbance and pollution histories. Snails were collected from a more pristine rural Lake 1 (Lake Lytle), and two urban lakes, Lake 2 (Capitol Lake) and Lake 3 (Lake Washington) on the Northwest Pacific coast. DNA methylation was assessed for each sample population using methylated DNA immunoprecipitation, MeDIP, followed by next-generation sequencing. The differential DNA methylation regions (DMRs) identified among the different lake comparisons suggested a higher number of DMRs and variation between rural Lake 1 and one urban Lake 2, and between the two urban Lakes 2 and 3, but limited variation between the rural Lake 1 and urban Lake 3. DMR genomic characteristics and gene associations were investigated. The presence of site-specific differences between each of these lake populations suggest an epigenetic response to varied environmental factors. The results do not support an effect of geographic distance in these populations. The role of dispersal distance among lakes, population history, environmental pollution and stably inherited methylation versus environmentally triggered methylation in producing the observed epigenetic variation are discussed. Observations support the proposal that epigenetic alterations may associate with phenotypic variation and environmental factors and history of the different lakes.

Background The development and management of shelf-sea ecosystems require a holistic understanding of the factors that influence the zooplankton structure and ecosystem functions. The Black Sea is an example of such areas influenced by eutrophication, overfishing, climate variability, invasions of the ctenophores Mnemiopsis leidyi followed by Beroe ovata. Thus, there is a set of principal factors which may influence and explain periodicities in the Black Sea ecosystem. Methods We analysed a total of 918 samples taken from 1991 to 2017 with intervals of 10 days. Taxa were identified to species, their abundance and biomass were calculated. We tested 12 environmental factors, which may explain zooplankton distribution: temperature, productivity-linked factors (surface chlorophyll as a proxi), wind, turbidity, lowest winter temperature, and concentration of the ctenophore M. leidyi. We used canonical correspondence analyses to find the dominant environmental factors and further regression analyses to retrieve dependences of plankton biomass on the major factors. Periodicities were assessed with the use of the Continuous wavelet transform and tested with use of One-way ANOSIM and PERMANOVA. The distances between ecosystem states in different years were assessed using non-metric multidimensional scaling. Results Currently, temperature and productivity are the major environmental factors driving zooplankton dynamics. Not long ago, before 1999, abundance of M. leidyi was one of the major factors explaining the zooplankton variance. Spectral analysis of species abundances revealed a 4-year transitional period in 1999–2002 (not reported before) when ecosystem adapted to a new invader B. ovata. Statistically robust 2- and 3-year periodicities were retrieved for most plankton taxa and some benthic larvae. We found robust correlations between temperature and surface chlorophyll concentration on one side and plankton abundances and biomass on the other, and retrieved multivariate regressions, which may have a prognostic value.

Broader investigations of diverse behaviors in non-model organisms and longer-term study of the mechanisms of plasticity will yield fundamental insights into the neurobiological, developmental, genetic, and environmental factors contributing to the “massively multifactorial system networks” which go awry in mental disorders.

Abstract The global prevalence of obesity has been rising at an alarming rate, accompanied by an increase in both childhood and maternal obesity. The concept of metabolic programming is highly topical, and in this context, describes a predisposition of offspring of obese mothers to the development of obesity independent of environmental factors. Research published in this issue of Clinical Science conducted by Litzenburger and colleagues (Clin. Sci. (Lond.) (2020) 134, 921–939) have identified sex-dependent differences in metabolic programming and identify putative signaling pathways involved in the differential phenotype of adipose tissue between males and females. Delineating the distinction between metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity is a topic of emerging interest, and the precise nature of adipocytes are key to pathogenesis, independent of adipose tissue volume.

The World Health Organization's (WHO's) 2001 International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) has as one of its central tenets the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in society. It acknowledges the need for medical and rehabilitation intervention in its biopscychosocial framework. However, the WHO realizes that society must do its part to facilitate this full participation and empowerment. Persons with complex communication needs (PWCCN) often need augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in order to express themselves. However, in order to access and successfully use AAC, PWCCN need access to the necessary AAC devices and services, as well as a willing society to interact with them as full contributing members of society. The factors outside of a person's specific physical and/or cognitive functional limitations are addressed in the ICF via the Personal and Environmental Factors. Personal Factors include the individual's personality traits, lifestyle, experiences, social/educational/professional background, race, gender, and age. Environmental Factors include community support systems, social service agencies, governments, social networks, and those persons that interact with the PWCCN. This article addresses the sociopolitical influences on PWCCN and their functioning from a human rights perspective. The necessary introspective role of speech-language pathologists in this process is explored.
