 Data   Management   Plans   (DMPs)   have   been   used   in   the   last   decade   to   encourage   good data   management   practices   among   researchers.   DMPs   are   widely   used,   preventive   tools that   encourage   good   data   management   practices.   DMPs   are   traditionally   used   to   manage data   during   the   planning   stage   of   the   project,   often   required   for   grant   proposals,   and   prior to   data   collection.   In   this   paper   we   will   use   a   case   study   to   argue   that   Data   Management  Plans   can   be   useful   in   improving   the   management   of   the   data   of   research   projects   that  have   moved   beyond   the   planning   stage   of   the   research   life   cycle.   In   particular,   we   focus  on   the   case   of   active   projects   where   data   has   already   been   collected   and   is   still   being  analyzed.   We   discuss   the   differences   and   commonalities   in   structure   between   preventive Data   Management   Plans   and   remedial   Data   Management   Plans,   and   describe   in   detail   the additional   considerations   that   are   needed   when   writing   remedial   Data   Management   Plans: the   goals   and   audience   of   the   document,   the   data   inventory,   and   an   implementation   plan.

Background: Data Management Plans (DMPs) are at the heart of many research funder requirements for data management and open data, including the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020. This article provides a summary of the findings of the DMP Use Case study, conducted as part of OpenAIRE Advance. Methods: As part of the study we created a vetted collection of over 800 Horizon 2020 DMPs. Primarily, however, we report the results of qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey on the experience of Horizon 2020 projects with DMPs. Results & Conclusions: We find that a significant number of projects had to develop a DMP for the first time in the context of Horizon 2020, which points to the importance of funder requirements in spreading good data management practices. In total, 82% of survey respondents found DMPs useful or partially useful, beyond them being “just” an European Commission (EC) requirement. DMPs are most prominently developed within a project’s Management Work Package. Templates were considered important, with 40% of respondents using the EC/European Research Council template. However, some argue for a more tailor-made approach. The most frequent source for support with DMPs were other project partners, but many beneficiaries did not receive any support at all. A number of survey respondents and interviewees therefore ask for a dedicated contact point at the EC, which could take the form of an EC Data Management Helpdesk, akin to the IP helpdesk. If DMPs are published, they are most often made available on the project website, which, however, is often taken offline after the project ends. There is therefore a need to further raise awareness on the importance of using repositories to ensure preservation and curation of DMPs. The study identifies IP and licensing arrangements for DMPs as promising areas for further research.

Transportation industry at large is a major consumer of fossil fuels and contributes heavily to the global greenhouse gas emissions. A significant portion of these emissions come from freight transportation and decisions on mode/route may affect the overall scale of emissions from a specific movement. It is common to consider several alternatives for a new freight activity and compare the alternatives from economic perspective. However, there is a growing emphasis for adding emissions to this evaluation process. One of the approaches to do this is through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA); a method for estimating the emissions, energy consumption and environmental impacts of the project throughout its life cycle. Since modal/route selections are often investigated early in the planning stage of the project, availability of data and resources for analysis may become a challenge for completing a detailed LCA on alternatives. This research builds on such detailed LCA comparison performed on a previous case study by Kalluri et al. (2016), but it also investigates whether a simplified LCA process that only includes emissions from operations phase could be used as a less resource intensive option for the analysis while still providing relevant outcomes. The detailed LCA is performed using SimaPro software and simplified LCA is performed using GREET 2016 model. The results are obtained in terms of Kg CO2 equivalents of GHG emissions. This paper introduces both detailed and simplified methodologies and applies them to a case study of a nickel and copper mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The analysis’ are done for three modal alternatives (two truck routes and one rail route) and for multiple mine lives.

Research in many academic fields today generates large amounts of data. These data not only must be processed and analyzed by the researchers, but also managed throughout the data life cycle. Recently, some academic libraries have begun to offer research data management (RDM) services to their communities. Often, this service starts with helping faculty write data management plans, now required by many federal granting agencies. Libraries with more developed services may work with researchers as they decide how to archive and share data once the grant work is complete.

BackgroundAccurate and timely data management (DM) is of key importance in clinical research to generate high-quality and GCP-compliant data for analysis and/or sharing. Our objective is to strengthen the capacity for DM in clinical research in resource-poor settings by organising several teaching initiatives.MethodsOur teaching initiatives have a twofold approach. First, a generic and comprehensive approach with capacity building on various thematical modules. These include a research component (overviewing the research data management procedures) and a technological component (introducing databases and software). In addition, a component on legislation, guidelines and standards specific towards DM is discussed, as well as a project management component on how to organise DM efficiently and timely. Second, we apply a more focused and study-specific approach which details roles and responsibilities in data management, milestones and documentation practices. Both approaches are based upon successful implementation in EDCTP-funded clinical trials, such as the 4ABC, PREGACT and Microbicide Safety Biomarkers studies, as well as the FP7 sponsored NIDIAG project. The target audience comprises various study stakeholders such as data managers, IT administrators, clinicians, laboratory researchers and statisticians, coming from sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and Latin America.ResultsA teaching model for promoting Good Data Management Practices has been developed with theory- and practice-based modules. This model is used at face-to-face workshops in remote settings and has been re-used by colleagues and implemented by other research institutions to promote further capacity building and sustainable development in the South. In addition, it has led to mutual learning and enhanced institutional and personal North-South collaborations.ConclusionThere is a clear case for promoting DM and providing guidelines for Good Data Management Practices. Our twofold approach has enabled the successful conduct of GCP compliant non-commercial clinical trials in the South.

This study aims to explain the financial management practices of the mosque. Specifically, the focus of this study is to explore and investigate how financial management practices in the mosque. A case study of one Malaysian mosque is undertaken. To achieve the objective of this study, the researcher used vari­ous techniques of data collection, including interviews, observations, and reviews of the documents. The findings reveal that the SHAS mosque has four mechanisms to manage financial management practices. The tools are performance assessment and evaluation, participation, regulation, and social auditing. This study concludes that financial management practices are a necessary process to support the accounta­bility of the mosque. Especially, secondary accountability relates to the responsibility of mosque managers toward capital providers of the mosque. The results of this study give some implications for the improvement of financial management practices, particularly in the mosque.

<p>Meta data management practices often overlook the role social dynamics play in harnessing the value of an organisation’s unique business language and the behaviours it creates. Using evidence from literature, interviews and cognitive ethnography, this research case sets out to explain the impacts of meta data management on social dynamics. The emerging themes (that is, newness, continual adaption, engagement tension, production tension, inefficiency and unreliability) represent salient factors by which organisations can be constrained in exploiting the worth of their meta data. This research emphasises the critical importance of organisations having a deeper understanding of the purpose and meaning of information. This understanding is a strength for creating value and for exploiting the worth arising in networks and in the social dynamics created within those networks. This strength contributes to organisations’ economic growth and is interdependent with their ability to manage complex phenomenon in a growing interconnected society.</p>

RESUMO Este artigo trás para discussão o papel dos planos de gestão de dados como instrumento facilitador da gestão dos dados durante todo o ciclo de vida da pesquisa. A abertura de dados de pesquisa é pauta prioritária nas agendas científicas, por ampliar tanto a visibilidade e transparência das investigações, como a capacidade de reprodutibilidade e reuso dos dados em novas pesquisas. Nesse contexto, os princípios FAIR, um acrônimo para ‘Findable’, ‘Accessible’, ‘Interoperable’ e ‘Reusable’ é fundamental por estabelecerem orientações basilares e norteadoras na gestão, curadoria e preservação dos dados de pesquisa direcionados para o compartilhamento e o reuso. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar uma proposta de template de Plano de Gestão de Dados, alinhado aos princípios FAIR, para a Fundação Oswaldo Cruz. A metodologia utilizada é de natureza bibliográfica e de análise documental de diversos planos de gestão de dados europeus. Concluímos que a adoção de um plano de gestão nas práticas cientificas de universidades e instituições de pesquisa é fundamental. No entanto, para tirar maior proveito dessa atividade é necessário contar com a participação de todos os atores envolvidos no processo, além disso, esse plano de gestão deve ser machine-actionable, ou seja, acionável por máquina.Palavras-chave: Plano de Gestão de Dados; Dado de Pesquisa; Princípios FAIR; PGD Acionável por Máquina; Ciência Aberta.ABSTRACT This article proposes to discuss the role of data management plans as a tool to facilitate data management during researches life cycle. Today, research data opening is a primary agenda at scientific agencies as it may boost investigations’ visibility and transparency as well as the ability to reproduce and reuse its data on new researches. Within this context, FAIR principles, an acronym for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, is paramount, as it establishes basic and guiding orientations for research data management, curatorship and preservation with an intent on its sharing and reuse. The current work intends to present to the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz a new Data Management Plan template proposal, aligned with FAIR principles. The methodology used is bibliographical research and documental analysis of several European data management plans. We conclude that the adoption of a management plan on universities and research institutions scientific activities is paramount. However, to be fully benefited from this activity, all actors involved in the process must participate, and, on top of that, this plan must be machine-actionable.Keywords: Data Management Plan; Research Data; FAIR Principles; DMP Machine-Actionable; Open Science.

Universities within the California State University System are given the mandate to teach the students of the state, as is the case with many regional, public universities. This mandate places teaching first; however, research and scholarship are still required activities for reaching retention, tenure, and promotion, as well as important skills for students to practice. Data management instruction for both faculty and undergraduates is often omitted at these institutions, which fall outside of the R1 designation. This happens for a variety of reasons, including personnel and resource limitations. Such limitations disproportionately burden students from underrepresented populations, who are more heavily represented at these institutions. These students have pathways to graduate school and the digital economy, like their counterparts at R1s; thus, they are also in need of research data management skills. This paper describes and provides a scalable, low-resource model for data management instruction from the university library and integrated into a department’s capstone or final project curriculum. In the case study, students and their instructors participated in workshops and submitted data management plans as a requirement of their final project. The analysis will analyze the results of the project and focus on the broader implications of integrating research data management into undergraduate curriculum at public, regional universities. By working with faculty to integrate data management practices into their curricula, librarians reach both students and faculty members with best practices for research data management. This work also contributes to a more equitable and sustainable research landscape.

Project management is directly involved with the results of internal organizational changes. PMBOK, being a guide to project management practices, assists in the broad view of all relevant areas. In this sense, the present study aims to develop a project of implementation of Augmented Reality in Distance Education, using the PMBOK as support in the elaboration of the life cycle of the project. The research assumes a qualitative character, of the case study type. The methodology identifies the difficulties in designing the project and the advantages offered by the practices and methods presented in the guide. The results present critical points in the design of the project and highlighted appropriate ways of dealing with each point. It is estimated, therefore, that the results can contribute to the validation of the need to properly manage the projects, since the conclusion points to the PMBOK as a concise and advantageous support for the management.
