Augmented reality is one of the innovative technologies that will provide significant benefits to construction project applications in the future. In this study, an augmented reality system is developed for improving construction project activities. By using this system, construction workers, equipment operators, engineers and managers can follow each step of the construction activities that they are responsible for. Users can access necessary information about training materials and construction methods related to the construction works. Thus, construction engineers and workers can learn the correct methods of project activities and prevent themselves to make wrong productions. The system is tested in ceramic tile installation. It has been proposed that the system can improve the quality and productivity of construction activities and therefore provide significant contributions to the construction industry.

Abstract This paper proposes an augmented reality (AR) framework and tool on smartphones as an alternative to conventional inspection for AM parts. The framework attempts to introduce the rapid inspection potential of smartphone based AR within manufacturing by leveraging the manufacturing capability of additive manufacturing (AM) to integrate markers onto AM parts. The key step from this framework that is explored in this paper is the design and quality assessment of AM markers for marker registration. As part of the marker design and quality assessment objectives, this research conducts an evaluation on the effects of different AM processes on the quality of augmentation achieved from AM fiducial markers. Furthermore, it evaluates the minimum fiducial pattern size that on integration onto AM parts will be viable for augmentation. The results suggest that the AM process and the size of the fiducial pattern play a significant role in determining the quality of the AM markers. The paper concludes by stating that dual material extrusion AM markers provide the highest number of detectable features and therefore the highest quality of AM markers, and the smallest viable fiducial pattern for Cybercode/QR code marker can be sized at 19 × 19mm2.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce a digitalization model (DM) for building construction courses in architectural education as a response to the recent emerging technologies in the era of digital transformations. This DM is developed and applied through augmented reality (AR) technologies to boost perception, understandings and ability to solve building construction details. Design/methodology/approach Based on a thorough review of recent technologies like AR, virtual reality (VR), building information modelling (BIM) and their applications in architectural education, the methodology involves the generation of a model, its application and evaluation. The model is based on the integration of BIM and AR which is applied into a third year “Building Construction Project” course. Each student has designed a residential building and accordingly prepared the construction drawings by adapting the DM. An online survey –based on Technology Acceptance Model – is conducted to evaluate the DM by quantitative data analysis from SPSS and Excel. Findings The key findings of the study include the following items: determination of the proper digital tools, the definition of the steps and workflow based on the building project phases to develop construction drawings and define precise details effectively. By the help of this, the DM is generated and applied. According to the survey and results, the DM which involves BIM-based AR is considered as beneficial, highly motivating and providing better perception on construction details. Originality/value Implication of AR/VR technologies is frequently seen in design studios, whereas building construction courses state its traditional approach. However, there is a huge potential in the digitalization of building construction education by increasing the perception of students together with the increased level of communication. The study aims to close the gap of digitalization by proposing a DM, which brings a systematic approach considering each phase of building construction project as conceptual, schematic, design development and construction documents by using BIM integrated AR. Moreover, the novel model specifically brings a new approach by generation of QR codes for construction details to embed videos or simulations into the two-dimensional drawing sheets. Furthermore, the DM proposes a new approach to satisfy emerging needs and requirements of the Architecture Engineering Construction industry.

Construction project management covering various aspects such as planning, coordinating, directing, scheduling, monitoring and control. Pre-construction services are used in planning a construction project before the actual construction begins. However, various problems happened at the pre-construction planning stage. This paper present an overview of the major problems in pre-construction stage and look at the potential of using augmented reality technology to overcome those problems. It was found that, at the pre-construction stage, good planning can not be done by the project teams especially to engineers and contractors due to the lack of supporting data, particularly when it involves information relating to underground utilities such as telecommunications, gas, electricity, water and sewerage. There are several approaches that can been undertaken in pre-construction services, especially in making an informed decision. The potential technology is using Augmented Reality (AR)-based approach in pre-construction service. Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the users environment in real-time. It was one of the tool that support the concept of cyber-physical systems (CPS). CPS is the integration systems between computational network and physical processes. Currently, there are many fields utilised the application of AR such as medical, militiry, vehicles, gaming and navigation. This paper presents the applications of an AR-based approach to medical and gaming industry and explore the potential of using AR in pre-construction. The finding shows that the AR is a potential decision support tool that will speed up the planning process of the project team in the pre-construction phase in real-time.
