ABSTRACTObjective: To study the impact of patient counseling on medication adherence and quality of life (QOL) in epileptic patients and to assess the factorsaffecting medication adherence. Methods: This study is a prospective observational study involving 100 patients with an age limit of 8-60 years and those taking Antiepilepticdrugs for at least 3 months. The study population received patient counseling during their first visit. The impact of patient counseling on QOL andmedication adherence was assessed using self-reported questionnaire QOLIE-31 and MMAS-8 between the first visit and the second visit. Statisticalanalysis (Paired t-test and Paired Chi-square test) was performed to analyze the impact of patient counseling on QOL and medication adherence inepileptic patients. Results: A total of 100 patients were included in the study. After providing patient counseling, it was observed that there was a statistically significant(p<0.05) improvement in all domains of QOLIE-31 and MMAS-8 scores. Before counseling, mean overall T-score of QOLIE-31 was 44.08±2.07whichwas changed to 49.14±1.27 after patient counseling with a mean change of 5.06 in overall T-score. In the case of medication adherence, beforecounseling 77% subjects were nonadherent to therapy, after counseling it was reduced to 41%. The common reasons for medication adherence wereforgetfulness, unawareness, therapy related, and economics related. Out of which forgetfulness along with unawareness was the major one. Conclusion: The study described that patient counseling plays a major role in improving QOL and medication adherence. Keywords: QOLIE-31, MMAS-8, Epilepsy, Antiepileptic drugs, Patient counseling.

Background: Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the common bothersome diseases among elderly men of age greater than 50 years. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the impact of patient counselling on quality of life (QoL), knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) and medication adherence among patients. Methods: A Prospective study was conducted in a total of 110 BPH patients from the department of urology for a period of 6 months. 55 patients in each group received silodosin 8 mg or tamsulosin 0.4 mg once daily. Data was collected by using a suitably designed proforma, international prostate symptom score (IPSS) and BPH impact index were used for assessing QoL, morisky green levin scale for medication adherence and a suitably designed KAP questionnaire for assessing KAP. Patients were counselled regarding the disease, drugs and lifestyle modifications using patient information leaflet. Results: The current study found that both the Tamsulosin and Silodosin group had an improvement on QoL, IPSS Q 8 by 36% and 41.5% respectively and improvement on BII by 35.5% and 47.3% respectively. Medication adherence had significant improvement from first to second review by 12%. Significant improvement in knowledge by 80.1%, attitude by 72.7% and practice by 79.2% were observed. Conclusions: The provision of effective counselling was found to have a profound impact on improving patient’s quality of life, medication adherence, knowledge, attitude and practice.

Background: Atopic dermatitis is an acute, sub-acute or chronic relapsing skin disorder characterized by intense itching, pruritus and oozing. It adversely affects the routine activities of patients for which effective treatment is to be provided along with proper counselling. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the impact of patient counselling on quality of life (QoL).Methods: A prospective study was conducted in 108 patients recruited from the Department of Dermatology for a period of 6 months. A written informed consent was taken. Out of the 108 patients, 54 patients received tacrolimus and the remaining received corticosteroids. The collected data was analysed and presented. Data was collected by using a suitably designed proforma. Dermatology life quality index (DLQI) was used for assessing QoL. Patients were counselled regarding the disease, drugs and lifestyle modifications using patient information leaflet (PIL).Results: The current study found that patient counselling was effective for both the groups with a p value <0.05. The effect of disease in quality of life improved from severe to mild in both groups (prior to counselling QoL mean value of 2.93±0.61 shifted to 1.18±0.71 post counselling). In the tacrolimus group, QoL mean value of 2.81±0.61 shifted to 0.98±0.71 after counselling. In the corticosteroids group, a shift from a mean QoL value of 3.05±0.59 to a mean of 1.38±0.65 was observed post counselling. Conclusions: The provision of effective counselling was found to have a profound impact on improving patient’s quality of life. A transition from severe effects of the disease to milder effects of the disease on quality of life was observed.
