We consider the problem of optimizing the expected logarithmic utility of the value of a portfolio in a binomial model with proportional transaction costs with a long time horizon. By duality methods, we can find expressions for the boundaries of the no-trade-region and the asymptotic optimal growth rate, which can be made explicit for small transaction costs (in the sense of an asymptotic expansion). Here we find that, contrary to the classical results in continuous time, see Janeček and Shreve (2004), Finance and Stochastics8, 181–206, the size of the no-trade-region as well as the asymptotic growth rate depend analytically on the level λ of transaction costs, implying a linear first-order effect of perturbations of (small) transaction costs, in contrast to effects of orders λ1/3 and λ2/3, respectively, as in continuous time models. Following the recent study by Gerhold et al. (2013), Finance and Stochastics17, 325–354, we obtain the asymptotic expansion by an almost explicit construction of the shadow price process.

Major environmental functions and human needs critically depend on water. In regions of the world affected by water scarcity economic activities can be constrained by water availability, leading to competition both among sectors and between human uses and environmental needs. While the commodification of water remains a contentious political issue, the valuation of this natural resource is sometime viewed as a strategy to avoid water waste. Likewise, water markets have been invoked as a mechanism to allocate water to economically most efficient uses. The value of water, however, remains difficult to estimate because water markets and market prices exist only in few regions of the world. Despite numerous attempts at estimating the value of water in the absence of markets (i.e., the “shadow price”), a global spatially explicit assessment of the value of water in agriculture is still missing. Here we propose a data-parsimonious biophysical framework to determine the value generated by water in irrigated agriculture and highlight its global spatiotemporal patterns. We find that in much of the world the actual crop distribution does not maximize agricultural water value.

Plant responses to drought occur across many time-scales, with stomatal closure typically considered to be a critical short-term response. Recent theories of optimal stomatal conductance linked to plant hydraulic transport have shown promise, but it is not known if stomata update their hydraulic “shadow price” of water use (marginal increase in carbon cost with a marginal drop in water potential) over days, seasons, or in response to recent drought. Here, I estimate the hydraulic shadow price in five species – two semi-arid gymnosperms, one temperate and two tropical angiosperms – at daily timescales and in wet and dry periods. I tested whether the shadow prices varies predictably as a function of current and/or lagged drought conditions. Diurnal estimates of the hydraulic shadow price estimated from observed stomatal conductance, while variable, did not vary predictably with environmental variables. Seasonal variation in shadow price was observed in the gymnosperm species, but not the angiosperm species, and did not meaningfully influence prediction accuracy of stomatal conductance. The lack of systematic variation in shadow price and high predictive ability of stomatal conductance when using a single set of parameters further emphasizes the potential of hydraulic-based stomatal optimization theories.
