This article generally discusses the role of marketing strategies in promoting the nonprofit civil society sector in its efforts to reach and engage the audiences. Many non-profit organizations consider the use of tactical marketing strategy as useful and essential. The success of the non-profit sector is related to the wider environment in which it operates, such as the political, economic, socio-cultural and technological. Therefore, a carefully designed marketing strategy can help the non-profit sector properly address the needs of the different target groups. The purpose of this paper is to explore ways in which marketing ideas and strategies are created and implemented in the non-profit civil society organizations and the tools used to achieve its mission. Part of this process is to determine how management in nonprofits views marketing, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with marketing efforts. In-depth interviews were conducted with leading representatives of civil society organizations working in the field of media and journalism, and the results were processed with the Atlas.ti software. Analysis of secondary data, including findings from past research, documents, and different publications, is also used to elaborate the research problem. The article notes that although there is an understanding in civil society organizations of the importance of strategic communication in marketing, it is not implemented enough due to lack of human resources and finances. The article discusses in detail the consequences of these findings.

This article presents the results of a quanti-qualitative research process that introduces a theoretical model of sustainability assessment of non-profit Civil Society Organizations (CSO) within the tertiary sector. The theoretical model, in the quantitative approach, is composed of performance assessment indicators, efficiency and efficacy metrics, and a cash flow generation matrix (CGM) by applying basic matrix algebra. In the qualitative approach, the model encompasses indicators of satisfaction and social integration. In both approaches, the evaluation is separated by project, both individual and joint, taking into consideration each project’s independence and autonomy. The evaluation process is executed within the context of a governance commitment that uses voluntary service and offers non-state public services. The answers of the model, tested with academic data, anchor robust and meaningful contributions to the literature of sustainability assessment of tertiary sector organizations. Lastly, considering that the results obtained with standardized financial and accounting statements may hinder the model’s potential, it is encouraged that empirical research is conducted with managerial data.

This paper emphasizes the economic importance of the civil society sector in the national socio-economic context. There is a systematic neglect of the economic and financial components of civil society organizations and non-profit sector in Croatia even though a significant volume of civil society organizations’ activities is funded from public sources and there is a high possibility of exploitation of their relatively privileged tax position. The purpose of this paper is to present research results of the funding sources, the financial potential and the elements of economic performance of citizens’ associations in the Republic of Croatia. The survey sample includes over 20,000 citizens’ associations which have submitted financial reports to the Registry of Non-profit Organizations in accordance with the statutory obligation. The research is based on aggregated data reported in the Balance Sheet and Performance Report for 2015 and 2016. The scientific contribution of the paper is reflected in the assessment of the financial performance and financial transparency of the activities of civil society organizations in the Republic of Croatia and their sustainability in comparison with Serbia and Slovenia.

Civil society plays a significant role in attempts to build a functioning democracy, support the rule of law, and promote and protect rights, as well as remaining one of the main driving forces of reform. Civil society continues to cooperate with state agencies in the field of developing political programmes, and to a certain extent assumes some responsibility for the implementation reforms. Despite this, the involvement of civil society in certain areas still remains declarative. An innovative trend in the civil society development in Ukraine has been creation of CSOs and NGOs coalitions, aiming to consolidate and accelerate the implementation of reforms through methods of advocacy and cooperation with state authorities. In 2017–2018 there was tension between civil society and the government despite the implementation of the National Strategy for Facilitating the Civil Society Development, adopted in 2016, however. In 2019 there is a tendency for improvement in state-civil society relations since the Constitutional Court has declared unconstitutional the clauses of the law on preventing corruption, which obliged representatives of public anti-corruption organizations to submit their asset declarations. Moreover, it has become possible to register CSOs in Ukraine online free of charge at the Governmental portal, which is an important step forward to improving public service delivery and creating a better legal environment for civil society. Online services for civil society organizations would be developed and introduced, including online registration of charitable organizations, public associations, applications for non-profit status, etc. The article analyzes the state of development, problems and challenges of the civil society within the framework of the implementation of reforms and European integration of Ukraine , as well as the influence of civil society on reforms in Ukraine, in order to implement reforms, achieve socio-economic progress, and ensure the national security of Ukraine. Also, the article analyzes the how the reforms are assessed by population, and overviews the tendency of increasing trust in the CSO activities by the citizens of Ukraine.

Authors of the study have tried to outline the impact of COVID 19 over the civil society sector in the Republic of North Macedonia. In this complex situation of a global pandemic they have focused on the allocation of funds. In addition, the cooperation between government institutions and citizens' associations in carrying out activities to deal with pandemic has also been examined. Content analyses have been applied to examine the regulations in which participation of the citizens' associations in the context of the pandemic is determined. In addition, comparative methods have also been applied to determine the degree of NGOs involvement in the use of budget and other donated funds. Finally, qualitative methods are also used to evaluate whether these funds have been the right choice of the associations in context of their sustainability to create opportunities to carry on with activities. When reviewing the whole paper, an impression is created that more comprehensive research with a larger number of respondents / NGOs is needed. Thus, through a case study answers will be provided to the issue of whether these NGOs are really non-profit or not. Also, whether in a certain period they fulfill certain government goals or other interests while profiting directly or indirectly on different bases. Finally, the authors in specific conclusions and recommendations determine a possible course of further action in terms of more transparent, more efficient and more comprehensive work of the NGOs.
