This work aims to reveal the anisotropic full-field displacemnet and the progressive failure behaviors of interbedded marble under uniaxial compression using three dimensional digital image correlation (3D DIC) technique. The effects of the interbed orientation on the field displacement and strain pattern and the crack evolution were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Testing results show that different stress strain responses can be generated depending on the interbed orientation, and the interbeds influence the localized deformation and high strain concentration pattern. The field displacement evolution curves present different pattern and are impacted by the localized deformation. In addition, the strain localization takes places progressively and develops at a lower rate for rock with 0° and 90° interbed than those of 30° and 60° interbed rock. The quick shear-sliding along the interbed leads to the minimum strength of rock having 30° interbed orientation. It is suggested that rock anisotropic field deformation is structure depended.

To avoid an unnecessary catastrophic accident due to a failure of a railway track, it is important to have a reliable condition monitoring system for the railway track. The integrity of the railway track can be assessed by monitoring the displacement field of the track, which can then be used to determine the strain and stress field. By knowing the stress history of the track and the S–N curves of the track material, the remaining life of the railway track can be predicted. In the present work, a simple system to monitor and record the displacement field of the railway track has been developed by using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. The set–up to monitor the displacement field of the railway track was developed using a high speed video camera of Nikon J1 to capture the image of the railway track when the train passing through. The DIC technique was then employed off line to measure the displacement field of the 2D image captured. The results showed that the full field displacement measured by using DIC technique gives a good agreement compared to the finite element results. The full field displacement can be used to calculate the strain-stress field, and later on the remaining life assessment can be conducted based on the results.

In this work, a new experimental methodology for analyzing the drop impact response is assessed using a pair of high-speed digital cameras and 3D digital image correlation software. Two different test boards are subjected to Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) standard free-fall impact conditions of half-sine pulse of 1500 G in magnitude and 0.5 ms in duration. The drop is monitored using a pair of synchronized high-speed cameras at a rate of up to 15,000 frames per second. The acquired images are subsequently analyzed to give full-field dynamic deformation, shape, and strain over the entire board during and after impact. To validate this new methodology for analyzing the impact response, the in-plane strain as well as the out-of-plane acceleration at selected locations were measured simultaneously during the drop using strain gauge and accelerometers and were compared with those obtained using high-speed cameras and 3D digital image correlation presented in this paper. Comparison reveals excellent correlation of the transient behavior of the board during impact and confirms the feasibility of using the full-field measurement technique used in this study.

AbstractThe three dimensional Digital Image Correlation (3D DIC) method is used for measurements of deformations and displacement in plane elements exposed to loading. The paper presents the experimental tests of an application of the ARAMIS system to the analysis of deformation of joints welded with the FSW method after shot peening treatment. The butt joints were made of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy sheets with the thickness of 1 mm, which next were peened with glass beads about granulation in range 500 ÷ 900 µm. Tests of residual stresses by X-ray diffraction were also carried out. The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of shot peening on the value of stresses and the location of deformations in butt joints.

Abstract Solid Expandable Tubular Technology (SETT) finds its extensive applications in the oil and gas industries where it is used for well completion and remediation. The purpose of his work is to investigate the material behavior upon expansion and to optimize the parameters that are relevant to the expansion process. Tube expansion tests have been performed using a newly designed experimental setup. Seamless stainless steel (AISI 304) tubes have been deformed and monitored using a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system to measure the full field displacement. A parametric study has been performed in order to study the effect of key expansion parameters such us mandrel geometry (angle), expansion ratio, mandrel-tube friction on the tube expansion and its buckling. The commercial code VIC-3D has been used to process the strain and displacement data obtained by the charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras. Moreover, the tests have been modeled numerically using the Finite Element Method (FEM) to gain further insight into the stress and strain distributions during metal forming. A good correlation has been observed between the numerical and experimental results.
