Effect of Tube Expansion on Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Characteristics During Condensation in Micro-Fin Tubes

Despite of the large number of research dedicated to condensation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in pristine micro-fin tubes, experimental investigation on effects of tube expansion have not been reported in the open literature. The paper reports measured cross-sectional dimensions, condensation heat transfer and pressure drop data of R1234ze(E) in pristine (5.10 mm OD) and expanded (5.26 mm OD) micro-fin tubes with mass fluxes from 100 to 300 kg/(m2·s). Effects of mass flux, vapor quality and tube expansion on the heat transfer coefficients and friction pressure gradients were investigated in the study. When the mass flux is 100 kg/(m2·s), the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of R1234ze(E) decrease after tube expansion. However, when the mass fluxes are 200 and 300 kg/(m2·s), tube expansion effects on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are not notable. In addition, the experimental results are analyzed based on the existing condensation heat transfer and pressure drop correlations.

Tube Expansion by Single Point Incremental Forming: An Experimental and Numerical Investigation

In this paper, we revisit the formability of tube expansion by single point incremental forming to account for the material strain hardening and the non-proportional loading paths that were not taken into consideration in a previously published analytical model of the process built upon a rigid perfectly plastic material. The objective is to provide a new insight on the reason why the critical strains at failure of tube expansion by single point incremental forming are far superior to those of conventional tube expansion by rigid tapered conical punches. For this purpose, we replaced the stress triaxiality ratio that is responsible for the accumulation of damage and cracking by tension in monotonic, proportional loading paths, by integral forms of the stress triaxiality ratio that are more adequate for the non-proportional paths resulting from the loading and unloading cycles of incremental tube expansion. Experimental and numerical simulation results plotted in the effective strain vs. stress triaxiality space confirm the validity of the new damage accumulation approach for handling the non-proportional loading paths that oscillate cyclically from shearing to biaxial stretching, as the single point hemispherical tool approaches, contacts and moves away from a specific location of the incrementally expanded tube surface

Interaction of Poly L-Lactide and Tungsten Disulfide Nanotubes Studied by in Situ X-ray Scattering during Expansion of PLLA/WS2NT Nanocomposite Tubes

In situ synchrotron X-ray scattering was used to reveal the transient microstructure of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA)/tungsten disulfide inorganic nanotubes (WS2NTs) nanocomposites. This microstructure is formed during the blow molding process (“tube expansion”) of an extruded polymer tube, an important step in the manufacturing of PLLA-based bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS). A fundamental understanding of how such a microstructure develops during processing is relevant to two unmet needs in PLLA-based BVS: increasing strength to enable thinner devices and improving radiopacity to enable imaging during implantation. Here, we focus on how the flow generated during tube expansion affects the orientation of the WS2NTs and the formation of polymer crystals by comparing neat PLLA and nanocomposite tubes under different expansion conditions. Surprisingly, the WS2NTs remain oriented along the extrusion direction despite significant strain in the transverse direction while the PLLA crystals (c-axis) form along the circumferential direction of the tube. Although WS2NTs promote the nucleation of PLLA crystals in nanocomposite tubes, crystallization proceeds with largely the same orientation as in neat PLLA tubes. We suggest that the reason for the unusual independence of the orientations of the nanotubes and polymer crystals stems from the favorable interaction between PLLA and WS2NTs. This favorable interaction leads WS2NTs to disperse well in PLLA and strongly orient along the axis of the PLLA tube during extrusion. As a consequence, the nanotubes are aligned orthogonally to the circumferential stretching direction, which appears to decouple the orientations of PLLA crystals and WS2NTs.

Single-Stroke Attachment of Sheets to Tube Ends Made from Dissimilar Materials

This paper presents a new joining method by a forming process for attaching sheets to tube ends. The process consists of two different forming stages carried out sequentially in a single stroke. Firstly, the free tube end is flared by compression with a contoured die, then is squeezed (indented) against the sheet surface to create a mechanical interlocking. The new process is carried out at an ambient temperature and, in contrast to existing joining by forming operations based on tube expansion, it avoids seal welds, tube protrusions above the sheet surfaces, and machining of grooves on the sheet holes to obtain the form-fit joints. The paper starts by analyzing the process deformation mechanics and its main operating variables and finishes by presenting examples that demonstrate its effectiveness for attaching sheets to tube ends made from polyvinylchloride and aluminum. Experimental and numerical simulation work provides support to the presentation.
