In recent decades, the expansion of alternative fuels production from crops traditionally used for food and animal feed has led to significant changes in the field of energy production, agriculture and food industry. Starch and sugar feedstocks for ethanol production (corn, wheat, sugar beet, sugar cane, etc.) require increasing arable land to meet market demands for the biofuel production. Although intensive studies are being carried out in order to identify improved and more cost-effective methods for the utilization of lignocellulosic and communal waste in the production of alcohol fuel, the possibility of using dry distillers? grains with solubles (DDGS), by-product of bioethanol production from corn and wheat as well as alcoholic beverages industry, is now in focus. Application of DDGS in livestock and poultry diets in concentrations greater than traditional could positively affect the economic viability of this biofuel production, but also stabilize the current imbalance in the food and animal feed market. However, DDGS feedstuff should not be treated as a perfect substitute for corn because the complexity of ration formulation determined at the farm or feedlot level is driven by energy and protein and other nutrient requirements, as well as their relative costs in the ration. Nevertheless, processing of corn by wet milling provides a multitude of co-products suitable for feedstuffs, food industry, pharmaceuticals, chemistry etc. Some of the most important wet milling co-products that have their use in feedstuffs are corn gluten feed and corn gluten meal. The use of DDGS as a substitute for traditional feed could prevent indirect land-use changes associated with biofuel production, and therefore preserve the environmental destruction by saving the forests and permanent pastures. The use of distiller?s grains can be beneficial to biofuel growth as this is an additional, the second largest, source of income accounting of 10-20% total income. In this paper, the possibilities of by-products from corn grain bioethanol and alcoholic beverages production are represented. Emphasis is placed on the dry distillers' grains with solubles, which is the most abundant and for researchers currently the most attractive co-product of bioethanol industry. Co-products from wet milling starch and ethanol production have not yet been thoroughly investigated and therefore represent an interesting subject for further research.

Abstract The development of biofuel production in the European Union is expected to increase the production of distillers grains, which can be a good feed material after concentration, centrifugation and drying. Research shows that dried distillers grains that meet microbiological and toxicological standards can be a nutritious feed for different species of animals. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of adding different levels (5 or 10%) of maize dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) to complete feeds on rearing performance and meat quality of young rabbits. The study was carried out with New Zealand White rabbits from weaning at 35 days to 90 days of age. The results obtained showed that the introduction of 5% DDGS to rabbit diets had no negative effect on rearing performance of rabbits from 35 to 90 days of age and on the quality of their meat. Despite using a detoxifier, the 10% level was hazardous to rabbits due to the high level of mycotoxins in the purchased DDGS and markedly decreased the quality of their meat. Therefore it appears necessary to analyse the distillers grains fed to this group of animals for mycotoxins, in particular to determine their safe levels for rabbits.

Abstract Due to increased use of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in animal feed and accessibility of ethanol plants in the Midwest, this study evaluated the effect of feeding DDGS in place of soybean meal (SBM) on the fecal microbiome of Boer goats. Twenty-four Boer goat kids (apx. 70 d of age; 28.21 ± 0.96 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment diets for 47 d. Treatments were 0% (0DDGS) and 100% (30DDGS) DDGS in place of SBM. Goats were placed in 8 pens (4 pens/treatment; 3 goats/pen) with ad libitum access to feed and water. Fecal pellets were collected on d 47 via rectal grab and stored at -80°C until microbiome sequencing was performed. The V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced by MR DNA (MR DNA, Shallowater, TX) on the Illumina HiSeq 2500 platform (Illumina, Inc., San Diego, CA). Data were analyzed using ANOVA with Tukey’s test for pairwise comparisons. Genera impacted by DDGS inclusion with individual relative abundances greater than 1% included increased Ruminococcus (P = 0.01) and Methanobrevibacter (P = 0.009) and decreased Lachnoclostridium (P = 0.02). Ruminococcus and Methanobrevibacter most likely increased in 30DDGS due to greater amounts of soluble fiber passing through the rumen, thus being fermented in the hindgut. The overall percentage of the phyla Bacteroidetes (P = 0.36) and Firmicutes (P = 0.12) did not differ between treatments; however, Firmicutes:Bacteroidetes increased (P = 0.05) in the 30DDGS diet. Treatment did not impact β-diversity (P = 0.47) although species richness increased (P = 0.09) in DDGS-fed goats as more soluble fiber was available for fermentation in the hindgut. In all, results of this study found replacing SBM with DDGS did not greatly alter the fecal microbiome of Boer goats.

The present paper reviews the environmental aspects of the production and use of corn oil-based biodiesel. The environmental aspects are analyzed by considering the used-corn oily feedstocks and production technology. Besides that, the possibilities for the improvement of the biodiesel production process are emphasized. The most valuable corn-oil feedstocks are waste corn oil and corn distillers oil obtained primarily from dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS). The use of DDGS, a by-product of ethanol production, for biodiesel production and glycerol, a by-product of biodiesel production, as a substrate for ethanol production, allows the development of an integrated ethanol/biodiesel production and contributes to the elimination or minimization of wastes and the production of the added-value products. Biodiesel is a degradable, less-toxic, safe, and generally, clean-burning fuel with exception of NOx emission that can be reduced by the appropriate methods but further investigations are desirable. Maize (corn) consists of distinct parts, germ, endosperm, and pericarp, with different chemical compositions. During the maize wet milling process, the maize is disintegrated into the main product starch and by-products, including corn germ, corn fiber and corn gluten (the technical term for corn endosperm specific proteins and not the same as wheat gluten). These by-products are used as low-value animal feed products. The corn germ contains high amounts of tocols and phospholipids, while the corn gluten is rich in carotenoids and the corn fiber fraction is rich in phytosterols and complex carbohydrates. Each by-product has the potential to serve as a precursor in the manufacture of functional food ingredients or nutraceuticals that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic properties. These food ingredients/nutraceuticals can be obtained through physical, chemical or enzymatic processes. Some nutraceuticals and food ingredients with market potential include corn fiber gum, oil, arabinoxylans, and xylo-oligosaccharides from corn fiber; corn germ oil and phospholipid ester from corn germ; and carotenoids and oligopeptides from corn gluten. This review focuses on current and prospective research into the use of corn germ, corn fiber and corn gluten in the production of potentially high-quality food ingredients or nutraceuticals.

The presence of mycotoxins in dried distillers’ grains with solubles (DDGS), a by-product of bioethanol production from maize, has been a matter of concern due to the increasing global utilisation of this ingredient in animal feed. In this study, 186 samples of maize DDGS produced in Brazil were analysed for the presence of major mycotoxins: aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, and G2), fumonisins (B1 and B2), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON) and ochratoxin A (OTA). Samples were provided by the local industry between January 2017 and October 2020, and mycotoxins were quantified by LC-MS/MS. More than 98% of the analysed samples were contaminated with mycotoxins, from which 59.9% had a single mycotoxin, 29.9% two mycotoxins, and 9.1% more than two mycotoxins. The most prevalent metabolites were fumonisin B1 and B2, being detected in 98.8% (mean 3,207 μg/kg) and 97.6% (mean 1,243 μg/kg) of the samples, respectively; aflatoxin B1 had the third highest positivity, with 32.3% (mean 1.47 μg/kg), followed by ZEN, with 18.01% (mean 18.2 μg/kg), DON, with 12.9% (mean 59.6 μg/kg), and OTA was not detected. Co-occurrence of total aflatoxins (AFT = aflatoxin B1+B2+G1+G2) and total fumonisins (FBT = fumonisin B1+B2) was observed in 32.07% of the samples analysed for these mycotoxins. Co-occurrence of AFT and ZEN was found in 7.84% of the samples analysed for such mycotoxins, while FBT and DON co-occurred at 13.01%. AFT, FBT, DON and ZEN co-occurred in only one sample (0.84%). Except for FBT, a considerable number of samples presented the evaluated mycotoxins below their respective limit of quantification (LOQ) with percentages of 67.61% for AFT, 81.99% for ZEN, 87.07% for DON and 100% for OTA. Since the production of bioethanol and its by-products is growing worldwide, including in Brazil, mycotoxicological monitoring of maize DDGS is crucial to identify the effects of mycotoxins occurrence in animal feed formulated with this ingredient.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the major technological changes related to the implementation of large-scale cogeneration and biofuel production in the sugar and alcohol industry. The reduction of the process steam consumption, implementation of new alternatives in driving mills, the widespread practice of high steam parameters use in cogeneration facilities, the insertion of new technologies for biofuels production (hydrolysis and gasification), the energy conversion of sugarcane trash and vinasse, animal feed production, process integration and implementation of the biorefinery concept are considered. Another new paradigm consists in the wide spreading of sustainability studies of products and processes using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the implementation of sustainability indexes. Every approach to this issue has as an objective to increase the economic efficiency and the possibilities of the sugarcane as a main source of two basic raw materials: fibres and sugar. The paper briefly presents the concepts, indicators, state-of-the-art and perspectives of each of the referred issues.
