On certain aspects of non-homogeneous Markov systems in continuous time

In the present paper we study three aspects in the theory of non-homogeneous Markov systems under the continuous-time formulation. Firstly, the relationship between stability and quasi-stationarity is investigated and conditions are provided for a quasi-stationary structure to be stable. Secondly, the concept of asymptotic attainability is studied and the possible regions of asymptotically attainable structures are determined. Finally, the cyclic case is considered, where it is shown that for a system in a periodic environment, the relative structure converges to a periodic vector, independently of the initial distribution. Two numerical examples illustrate the above theoretical results.

Positivity of descriptor linear systems with regular pencilsThe positivity of descriptor continuous-time and discrete-time linear systems with regular pencils are addressed. Such systems can be reduced to standard linear systems and can be decomposed into dynamical and static parts. Two definitions of the positive systems are proposed. It is shown that the definitions are not equivalent. Conditions for the positivity of the systems and the relationship between two classes of positive systems are established. The considerations are illustrated by examples of electrical circuits and numerical examples.

The paper shows how time considerations, especially those concerning contract duration, affect incomplete contract theory. Time is not only a dimension along which the relationship unfolds, but also a continuous verifiable variable that can be included in contracts. We consider a bilateral trade setting where contracting, investment, trade, and renegotiation take place in continuous time. We show that efficient investment can be induced either through a sequence of constantly renegotiated fixed-term contracts; or through a renegotiation-proof “evergreen” contract—a perpetual contract that allows unilateral termination with advance notice. We provide a detailed analysis of properties of optimal contracts.

The multitype continuous-time Markov branching process has many biological applications where the environmental factors vary in a periodic manner. Circadian or diurnal rhythms in cell kinetics are an important example. It is shown that in the supercritical positively regular case the proportions of individuals of various types converge in probability to a non-random periodic vector, independent of the initial conditions, while the absolute numbers of individuals of various types converge in probability to that vector multiplied by a random variable whose distribution depends on the initial conditions. It is noted that the proofs are straightforward extensions of the well-known results for a constant environment.

AbstractIn this paper, we show that certain trigonometric polynomial shearlets which are special cases of directional de la Vallée Poussin-type wavelets are able to detect step discontinuities along boundary curves of periodic characteristic functions. Motivated by recent results for discrete shearlets in two dimensions, we provide lower and upper estimates for the magnitude of the corresponding inner products. In the proof, we use localization properties of trigonometric polynomial shearlets in the time and frequency domain and, among other things, bounds for certain Fresnel integrals. Moreover, we give numerical examples which underline the theoretical results.

This paper studies impulsive control systems with finite and infinite delays. Several stability criteria are established by employing the largest and smallest eigenvalue of matrix. Our sufficient conditions are less restrictive than the ones in the earlier literature. Moreover, it is shown that by using impulsive control, the delay systems can be stabilized even if it contains no stable matrix. Finally, some numerical examples are discussed to illustrate the theoretical results.

Wicksell's classical corpuscle problem deals with the retrieval of the size distribution of spherical particles from planar sections. We discuss the problem in a local stereology framework. Each particle is assumed to contain a reference point and the individual particle is sampled with an isotropic random plane through this reference point. Both the size of the section profile and the position of the reference point inside the profile are recorded and used to recover the distribution of the corresponding particle parameters. Theoretical results concerning the relationship between the profile and particle parameters are discussed. We also discuss the unfolding of the arising integral equations, uniqueness issues, and the domain of attraction relations. We illustrate the approach by providing reconstructions from simulated data using numerical unfolding algorithms.

The generalized interval observer design conditions for continuous-time Metzlerian Takagi-Sugeno systems are presented in the paper. Attention is focused on the analysis and design guaranteeing the asymptotic convergence of the interval observer error and positivity of interval observer state. The relationship between the nonnegativity of the observer gains and the corresponding positive observer state attractiveness is also shown. The method presented extends and generalizes the results that recently appeared in the literature.
