ABSTRACT Siqueirism has become a derivative of a word that was common in political circles since the creation of Tocantins state. With the configuration of a practically homogeneous political group in Tocantins, the politicians that were affiliated to Siqueira Campos were called “siqueiristas”, whether they were congressmen, mayors, councilman or senators. Thus, we aim to make an analysis of siqueirismo with respect to other forms of domination in contemporary Brazil using a Weberian perspective. Our interest is to point which forms of power can be used to built a perception of what is siqueirism and compare it to other political characters from Brazilian history of the mid-late 20th century.   KEYWORDS: Tocantins; siqueirism; domination; politics. This essay is based upon the concept that literary texts build a fictional scenario where the collective memory is represented and actualized. The collective memory is a reflection as well as cooperating agent in the production of social changes where literary texts influence the reader’s processes of enculturation and construction of identity. The study is framed in the late 20th century and it is focussed on the analysis of Children and Young literature where the fictional girl is the main character: Veva y el Mar, Caperucita en Manhattan y Bella y Oscura. The essay aims at defining the processes of change that took place in the collective imaginary through the analysis of the literary memory as well as the coexistence of old and new relationships that the texts establishes with its interpreters and the identities which were moulded by the literature of that time.

AbstractAlthough several disciplines have dealt with the study of poverty, they have not focused on the analysis of spatial distribution or its variations. This study has explored the phenomenon and its variations in the territory of the Argentinean Great North on the basis of a study of child mortality. This analysis acquired particular interest in the 1990s which saw profound transformations at the economic, political and social level.

The Silk Road as an image is a relatively new one for Afghanistan. It appeals to both the pre-Islamic and the perceived Islamic past, thus offering an Islamic balance to previous identities linked to Bamiyan or to the Kushans. It also appeals to a broader and more international image, one that has been taken up by many other countries. This paper traces the rise of the image of the Silk Road and its use as a metaphor for ancient trade to encompass all contacts throughout Eurasia, prehistoric, ancient and modern, but also how the image has been adopted and expanded into many other areas: politics, tourism and academia. It is argued here that the origin and popularity of the term lies in late 20th century (and increasingly 21st century) politics rather than any reality of ancient trade. Its consequent validity as a metaphor in academic discussion is questioned

Since the late 20th century major, European cities have exhibited large projects driven by neoliberal urban planning policies whose aim is to enhance their position on the global market. By locating these projects in central city areas, they also heighten and reinforce their privileged situation within the city as a whole, thus contributing to deepening the centre–periphery rift. The starting point for this study is the significance and scope of large projects in metropolitan cities’ urban planning agendas since the final decade of the 20th century. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the correlation between the various opposing conservative and progressive urban policies, and the projects put forward, for the city of Madrid. A study of documentary sources and the strategies deployed by public and private agents are interpreted in the light of a process during which the city has had a succession of alternating governments defending opposing urban development models. This analysis allows us to conclude that the predominant large-scale projects proposed under conservative policies have contributed to deepening the centre–periphery rift appreciated in the city.
