This research project is aimed at answering the question: What forms of communication did a music therapy student use in her work with high school students who have special needs, and why? As communication is one of the primary goals for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other learning difficulties, (Gadberry 2011) I, as the music therapy student and researcher explored different forms of communication used in my practice and the reasoning behind them using Secondary Analysis of Data and Thematic Analysis. Forms of communication discussed include musical communication, social communication, direct instruction, gestures, key signs from New Zealand Sign Language, verbal communication, visual communication, technology and Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems, and combinations of each. The wide variety of reasons for my use of these forms of communication include, but are not limited to: supporting engagement, encouraging communication, promoting self-regulation, encouraging choice-making and turn-taking, supporting socialization and interaction and reinforcing behavioural messages. The research was informed by my clinical work on placement at a learning support centre for children with special needs at a high school. The concepts of music as therapy and music in therapy are explored in relation to music therapy work involving different forms of communication. My conclusions support the use of various forms of communication in music therapy in special needs education settings when aligned with a focus on music, improvisation and the individual participant.

The objectives of this study are: (1) identify social criticism the author delivers in Kumpulan Sajak Dilema Melayu Patani, and (2) study the relevance of the result as literature teaching material for Senior High School. This is a descriptive qualitative research using library technique for data collection. This research uses soft data in the form of words, phrase, clause and sentences located in the poetry by Phaosan Jehwae which contains social criticism. Data was analyzed using dialectic method. The researchers classify the result of this into social criticism and learning material relevance. The social criticism includes social condition which leads to criticism towards government, economic problems due to assets taken, which lead to poor condition, cultural problems due to changing era, and lack of faith due to foreign cultures. This poetry is found to be relevant as literature learning material, because (a) the language is appropriate with Senior High School students, (b) the content is psychologically appropriate with Senior High School spirits, and (c) socially, these poetries depict oppressed society appropriate with Senior High School students’ desire in fighting for the people. In conclusion, the poetry is relevant as literature learning material and the social criticism helps in that aspect.

Keywords: Potry, Social Critism, Literature Learning Material.

Abstrak

Tujuan dalam penelitian ini ada dua, yakni (1) menemukan kritik sosial yang ingin disampai pengarang, dan (2) relevansi hasil penelitian sebagai bahan ajar dalam pembelajaran sastra di SMA. Background: Developmental disorders and high Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection rates have been reported. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of H. pylori in a special needs school where all students had developmental disorders in Japan. Methods: In 2017, third-grade junior high school and second- and third-grade high school students attending a special needs school with developmental disorders were enrolled. Participants of Saga Prefecture's H. pylori test and treat project, which comprised third-grade junior high school students not from special needs school, were assigned to the control group. Results: In the control group, H. pylori positive results were 3.18% (228/7,164) students. Similarly, in developmental disorder group, H. pylori positive results were 6.80% (13/191) students. For the developmental disorder and control groups, this present examination sensitivity was 7.03% (13/185), specificity was 96.76% (6,815/7,043), positive predictive value was 5.39% (13/241), negative predictive value was 97.54% (6,815/6,987), Likelihood ratio of a positive result 2.17 and Odds ratio was 2.26 (95% confidence interval: 1.27–4.03, p = 0.005).Conclusion: The prevalence of H. pylori infection was significantly higher in adolescents with developmental disorders than in typically developing adolescents.

Children with special needs (ABK) who are enrolled in regular (public) schools will elicit empathy or negative behavior, because regular students cannot comprehend and tolerate the behavior of the ABK. The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between empathy and attitude towards ABK on students of a regular junior high school in Surabaya. Subjects are 11-16 year old students (N = 25) who have interacted with an ABK, obtained through total population study. Data was collected with scales for attitude towards ABK and empathy, and was further analyzed with a non-parametric Kendall's Tau-b correlation. Results showed values for r = .229 and p = .124 (p >.5), indicating a lack of correlation between empathy and attitude towards ABK on regular students of the junior high school. This lack of correlation was argued to be because attitude includes a cognitive component that acts as a source of information, and empathy of an individual is objective and situational. It was further argued that external factors such as experience, culture, learning process, direct contact, and information can also contribute to the lack of relationship between the two variables. Descriptively, a majority of subjects have a moderately positive to very positive attitude (92%) and empathy towards ABK was categorized as very high (96%).
