The Impact of Quantitative versus Qualitative Risk Reporting on Risk Professionals' Strategic and Operational Risk Judgments

SYNOPSIS Enterprise risk management (ERM) programs are an emerging component of managerial accounting that enable senior management to manage critical threats to the organization and identify strategic opportunities to exploit. A growing area of debate within ERM involves the extent to which risk reports should be assessed qualitatively or measured quantitatively (Risk and Insurance Management Society [RIMS] 2012). In many settings, quantitative reports are used and appear to be preferred due to their precision. Additional research suggests, however, that the directional nature of qualitative reports might fit better with senior management's cognitive expectations when considering strategic risks. We conduct an experiment that manipulates risk reporting format (quantitative versus qualitative) across both strategic and operational settings to examine their impact on risk management professionals' perceptions related to the preparer of the reports and the underlying quality of the information. We find that qualitative (quantitative) report information has a positive (negative) indirect association with managerial perceptions regarding strategic risk management activities. Specifically, in the strategic risk setting, the choice of format is directly associated with the perceived reliability and perceived relevance of the risk information. However, we do not find this relationship in the setting where risk reports focus on operational risks. These findings suggest that senior management favors qualitative information for strategic risks, whereas they are skeptical about quantitative measures for complex strategic risks.

Every company in carrying out its operational activities will definitely face a risk. The various possible risks that can be experienced by the company in carrying out its operational activities need to be managed and controlled by carried out risk management. The implementation of risk management is expected to assist companies in identified, analyzed, assessed, and controlled risks and the impact of risks. One approach that can be used to perform risk management is Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). This research aims to analyze operational risks that occurred at CV Tarukalpa Dewata based on an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) approach by identified risks, risk assessments, efforts to respond the risks and carry out risk controls to find out what actions must be taken to minimize the possibility of risks and impact risk. This research used a qualitative descriptive research method by collecting data through interviews, observations and questionnaires. The results showed that in the operational activities of CV Tarukalpa Dewata there were seventeen possible risks consisting of four risks originating from human resources owned by the company, five risks that occurred in the process of making export documents, two risks that occurred due to technological constraints, and six external risks. The results of the risk assessment showed that there were three levels of risk that occurred in the operational activities of CV Tarukalpa Dewata namely moderate, low, and very low. Responses to existing risks are carried out by monitoring, controlling management, and paying special attention (urgent) in the company's operational activities.

Operational risk is defined as the potential losses resulting from events caused by inadequate or failed processes, people, equipment, and systems or from external events. One of the most important challenges for the management of the company is to improve its results through its operational risk identification and evaluation. Most of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) scholarship has roots in the finance/risk management and insurance (RMI) discipline, mainly in the banking sector. This study proposes an innovative operational risk assessment methodology (OpRAM), to evaluate operational risks focused on telecommunications companies (TELCOs), on the basis of an operational risk self-assessment (OpRSA) process and method. The OpRSA process evaluates operational risks through a quantitative analysis of estimates which inputs are the economic impact and the probability of occurrence of events. The OpRSA method is the “engine” for calculating the economic risk impact, applying actuarial techniques, which allow estimation of unexpected losses and expected losses distributions in a TELCO. The results of the analyzed business unit in the field work were compared with standardized ratings (acceptable, manageable, critical, or catastrophic), and contrasted against the company’s managers, proving that the OpRSA framework is a reliable and useful management tool for the business, and leading to more research in other sectors where operational risk management is key for the company success.

PurposeThis study investigates firm attributes (namely level of capitalisation, scope of operation, organisational structure, organisational lifecycle, systemic importance and size) affecting the robustness of enterprise risk management (ERM) practice, the extent to which ERM affects the performance of banks and the impact of ERM on the long-term sustainability of banks in Nigeria. This was against the backdrop that the 2012 banking reform was a major regulatory intervention that mainstreamed ERM in the Nigerian banking sector.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed a mixed methodology of content, trend and quantitative analyses. Ex post facto research design was deployed to analyse performance differential of banks, with respect to the implementation of ERM, over a 10-year period (2008–2017). A disclosure checklist developed from the COSO ERM integrated framework was used to assess the robustness of ERM by content-analysing divulgence on risk management in published annual reports. The banking reform periods were dichotomised into pre- (2008–2012) and post- (2013–2017) reform periods. Jonckheere–Terpstra test, independent sample t-test and Mann–Whitney test were applied to analyse a total of 1,036 firm-year observations over the period 2008–2017.FindingsResult shows that bank attributes significantly affecting the robustness of risk management practice are level of capitalisation, scope of operation, systemic importance and size. Performance of banks improved slightly during the post-2012 banking reform period. This suggests that as banks consolidate on the gains of ERM, benefits of the regulatory policy on risk management may be realised in the long run. Result also shows that ERM enhances long-term performance, connoting that effective risk management could serve as a competitive strategy for surviving turbulence that typically characterises the banking sector.Practical implicationsThe emergence of level of capitalisation, scope of operation, systemic importance and size as determinants of ERM provides empirical evidence to support the practice of reviewing the capital requirements for banking business from time to time by regulatory authorities (i.e. recapitalisation policy) as a strategy for managing systemic risk. Top management of banks may consider instituting mechanisms that will ensure risk management is given prominence. A proactive approach must be taken to convert risks to opportunities by banks and other financial institutions, going forward, to cope with the vicissitudes of financial intermediation.Originality/valueThe originality of the study stems from the consideration that it provides some new insights into the impact of ERM on banks long-term sustainability in a developing country. The study also contributes to knowledge by exposing the factors determining the robustness of risk management practice. The study developed a checklist for assessing ERM practice from annual reports and other risk management disclosure documents. The paper also adds to the scarce literature on risk governance and risk management.

Abstract- This research aims to observe and analyze the impact of Good Corporate Governance towards Corporate Value as well as analyzing whether Enterprise Risk Management is able to moderate its impact. Good Corporate Governance is proxied by the presence of Independent Commissioners, Audit Committee, as well as Managerial Ownership. The population of this research includes all financial companies that publish their annual report in Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI) over the period of 2017-2019. Data were analyzed using the multiple regression method and the moderated regression analysis. The result of this research found that Independent Commissioners and Audit Committee gives positive and significant impact towards Corporate Value while Managerial Ownership gives negative and insignificant impact towards Corporate Value. Enterprise Risk Management is not able to moderate the impact of Independent Commissioner and Managerial Ownership towards Corporate Value but is able to moderate the impact of the Audit Committee towards Corporate Value. Tujuan kertas kerja ini adalah untuk melaporkan hasil kajian terhadap amalan perakaunan pengurusan dan amalan pengurusan risiko di institusi kewangan. Data dikutip menggunakan borang soal selidik yang dihantar kepada 106 institusi kewangan yang tersenarai di dalam website Bank Negara Malaysia, di mana Ketua Pegawai Kewangan atau pegawai terkanan di jabatan kewangan institusi–institusi tersebut dilantik sebagai responden kajian. Analisis amalan perakaunan pengurusan berdasarkan kerangka IFAC (1998) menunjukkan bahawa amalan yang lazim diguna pakai adalah amalan di peringkat pertama, diikuti dengan amalan selepas era 1995. Dapatan ini menunjukkan bahawa amalan perakaunan pengurusan tradisional masih diguna pakai secara meluas oleh institutsi-institusi kewangan di Malaysia walapun amalan–amalan kontemporari (peringkat ke 4 dan ke atas) telah diperkenalkan. Bagi amalan pengurusan risiko, kebanyakan institusi telah melaksanakan kerangka Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) secara menyeluruh atau sebahagian. Amalan perakaunan pengurusan berkaitan penyata kewangan dan analisis nisbah dianggap sebagai memberikan sumbangan utama kepada pengurusan risiko. Kata kunci: Perakaunan pengurusan; pengurusan risiko; institusi kewangan The aim of this paper is to report the results of a study on management accounting and risk management practices in financial institutions. The research method involved administering a questionnaire to 106 financial institutions listed on the Malaysian Central Bank’s website and the respondents were the chief financial officers (CFO) or the most senior positions in the finance department of the institutions. Based on the IFAC’s (1998) framework, it was found that the most widely practiced were the management accounting practices at Stage 1, followed by practices of Post 1995. This finding shows that despite the emergence of contemporary management accounting practices (Stage 4 onwards), traditional management accounting that focuses on financial performance and budgetary control is still widely practiced by financial institutions in Malaysia. As for the risk management practices, most of the firms have either implemented a complete or partial Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework. The findings from the survey showed that management accounting practices related to financial statement and ratio analysis were perceived to contribute most towards risk management. Budgetary control, budgeting and strategic planning were also perceived to be important in managing operational risks. Key words: Management accounting; risk management; financial institutions

Purpose of research. Results. The authors propose to specify the notion of strategic management. Thus the principles of strategic management were developed and specific characteristics of commercial banks financial management have been defined. Besides that the notion of financial risk of the credit organization was specified and new approach to commercial banks’ risk management, based on their origin was developed. Implementation of the results. The results can be used for the publications on different aspects of this topic and in the educational process of the education institutions. Theoretical aspects connected to the difficulty of evaluating banking risks and described in the paper, can be of interest in the process of developing practical measures on preventing or minimizing extent of exposure of the banking system to the risks in general. The main concepts of this research can become a base for further scientific and practical research in the field of rationalizing the banking risks management system.

Risk is inherent in all parts of the organization and if it is not efficiently managed by the senior management it will affect the confidence and expectations of the stakeholders. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is said as a best practice technique to evaluate and manage all these risks in this new economic reality. Therefore, organizations practicing ERM are more prepared in managing the feasible threats. In fact, there is a general consensus by scholars and researchers that organizations practicing ERM will improve the organizational performance. However, empirical evidence regarding this matter is still considered scarce. As such, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the mediating effect of ERM on risk management support and organizational performance among public listed companies.

This study examined the impact of enterprise risk management (ERM) and internal audit function (IAF) on the financial reporting quality (FRQ) of state universities in Zimbabwe. Utilizing a dataset of 250 respondents from across nine (9) state universities, the researchers examined the effectiveness of ERM and the IAF on the quality of financial reporting in state universities. The researchers employed the contingency theory and studied each university separately to report on items that are specific to each and then also establish a commonality in the definition of parameters to be used in setting up the benchmark against which future performance may be measured. The findings were that there is a strong and significant relationship between ERM and the FRQ and also that there is a positive relationship between the internal audit function and FRQ. Quality internal audit results improved corporate governance systems. The results also underscore the significance and need for central government to establish and monitor a system of good ERM processes that minimize corporate governance breaches and enhance integrity and independence in financial reporting in state universities.
