Purpose Corporate managers spend on research and development (R&D) for reasons of growth and survival. However, they may be less willing to invest in R&D because of its long-term horizon, high failure rate and uncertain outcomes. This study aims to explore the extent to which managerial ownership influences R&D expenditure decisions. Design/methodology/approach Apart from the linear regression models, this study uses a semi-parametric quantile regression analysis for a sample of German non-financial firms throughout 2009–2018. Findings This study finds a nonmonotonic sensitivity of R&D spending to the level of managerial ownership over various quantiles of R&D distribution. That is, managerial ownership increases the expenditure on R&D at low R&D intensity firms. However, it decreases the expenditure on R&D at high R&D intensity firms. These results suggest the presence of a maximum level of R&D expenditure, after which owner-managers would be unwilling to spend on R&D. Practical implications The results confirm the importance of corporate ownership structure for firm R&D and innovation activities. It provides an implication for corporate policymakers to reform the corporate ownership structures to encourage corporate managers and owners to invest in R&D projects. Originality/value This study offers two distinct contributions study. First, it provides the first German shred of evidence on the nonlinear relationship between managerial ownership and R&D expenditure decisions by distinguishing between high and low R&D intensity firms. Second, unlike prior research, it uses a semi-parametric quantile regression analysis. This method is more efficient than least-squares estimators and produces robust estimators to heteroscedasticity of the residuals.

This study aims to examine and analyze the effect of managerial ownership structure, financial distress, and growth opportunities on accounting conservatism with litigation risk as a moderating variable. The population in this study was 171 manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the 2010-2019 period. This research was conducted using the purposive sampling technique so that 36 samples were obtained. The data analysis method used multiple linear regression analysis and interaction tests with the help of the Eviews application program. The study results indicate that growth opportunities partially have a positive effect on applying the principle of accounting conservatism. Meanwhile, managerial ownership structure and financial distress partially do not affect the application of accounting conservatism principles. Simultaneously managerial ownership structure, financial distress and growth opportunities affect the application of accounting conservatism principles. Litigation risk as a moderating variable cannot moderate the influence of managerial ownership structure, financial distress, and growth opportunities on applying accounting conservatism principles to manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the 2010-2019 period. Keywords: managerial ownership structure, financial distress, growth opportunities, litigation risk and accounting conservatism.

Purpose Ownership structure deals with internal corporate governance mechanism, which plays important role in minimizing conflict of interests between shareholders and management Ownership structure is an important mechanism that influences the value of firm, financing and dividend decisions. This paper aims to examine the impact of the ownership structures, i.e. managerial ownership, institutional ownership on financing and dividend policy. Design/methodology/approach The authors use panel data of manufacturing firms from both developed and developing countries, and the generalized method of moments (GMM) is applied to analyze the results. The authors collect the data from DataStream for the period of 2010 to 2019. Findings The authors find that managerial ownership and ownership concentration have significant and positive effects on debt financing, but they have significant and negative effects on dividend policy. Institutional ownership shows a positive impact on financing decisions and dividend policy for sample firms. Originality/value This study fills the gap by proving the policy implications for both firms and investors, as managers prefer debt financing, but at the same time try to ignore dividend payment. Therefore, investors may not invest in firms with a higher proportion of managerial ownership and may choose to invest more in institutional ownership, which lowers the agency cost.

The independent variables used in this research are ownership structure, financial performance and firm size. This research is processed using secondary data types. Tests in this research used descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis to analyze the data. By using the sampling method with purposive sampling technique, 160 data were obtained where this research was processed using the SPSS version 25 program, and the population studied included mining companies listed on the IDX during the 2016-2019 period.
