In our work, based on the archival data of observations carried out in 1955 – 2015, hydrological and hydrochemical characteristics in the 10–30 m layer in the northwestern shelf (NWS) of the Black Sea, including the Danube estuary area are analyzed. Intra-annual changes in dissolved oxygen and water temperature in the NWS and in the Danube estuary area are shown to have a well-pronounced seasonal character. Water temperature in the estuary area of the Danube is characterized by lower values in all seasons than in the NWS. Salinity at the horizons of 10 and 20 m in winter in the estuary area of the Danube is lower than in the NWS due to the freshening of the upper mixed layer by river runoff. In spring, resulting from increased river runoff, an increase in the stability of water stratification occurs, which prevents the spread of heat inland and vertical exchange of oxygen. The strongest freshening in the studied layer is established at the horizon of 10 m. In spring, the southerly winds “trap” river waters in the shallower part of the shelf, and westerly winds give rise to the spread of freshened waters to the east. The summer-autumn period is characterized by low intensity of vertical and horizontal water exchange, which reduces the flow of oxygen to the subsurface layers. Harmonic analysis shows that in the Danube estuary area and in the NWS, the annual signal is dominant for temperature, salinity and oxygen, except for salinity at the 30 m horizon in the estuary area of the Danube. The semiannual harmonic of salinity at 30 m in the estuarine area of the Danube is most likely related to both limited data availability and their noisiness.

Based on the archival data set of the Institute of Natural and Technical Systems from 1955 to 2015 the intra-annual variability of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and PH in the surface layer of the waters of the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea, including the Danube estuary area, is analyzed. The temperature of surface waters on the NW shelf of the Black Sea and the Danube waters differ significantly on a seasonal scale. The Danube waters considerably cool down the surface layer of the estuarine zone during the winter months. Seasonal changes in salinity are associated not only with large seasonal fluctuations in the river flow, precipitation and evaporation, but also with seasonal variability of the wind field. In the autumn period in the spatial distribution there is an increased oxygen content off the coast of Romania, which is related to the prevailing northwestern wind in this region, which leads to the drift of the transformed Danube waters along the western coast. Due to the prevalence of southeastern winds off the Romanian coast, the Danube waters are blocked in the coastal region, which is clearly seen from the spatial distribution of oxygen. The seasonal dynamics of the pH value corresponds to the development of production processes. From winter to summer, an increase in the pH value is noted in both water areas, and then its decrease by autumn. The absolute predominance of the annual harmonic in the seasonal variability of most of the analyzed hydrological and hydrochemical characteristics in most of the examined shelf water area was confirmed. The exception is the salinity in the estuary area of the Danube. The semiannual harmonic describes more than 60% of the total variance due to the seasonal variability of salinity, which is related to the peculiarities of the wind regime in the region.

Aim: To study seasonal changes of hydrological parameters of the water and Artemia population status in the hypersaline Galgas Lake in the period of 2017-2019. Study Area and Duration: The study was carried out in the Crimea, a peninsula on the northern coast of the Black Sea in Eastern Europe in 2017-2019. Methodology: Water (brine) and Artemia samples were collected monthly from the lake located at the coastal line of the Black Sea. The parameters namely temperature, pH, salinity, Eh, and oxygen concentration of were determined in the water. Artemia population including the developmental stages and the cysts hatching rate of the cysts were measured in different seasons in the study period. The differences in hydrochemical characteristics of the study area in different years and seasons were observed. Results: The results showed that the hydrochemical characteristics of the study area varied with the climate peculiarities. In summer months 2017, the lake was dried out. In the hot period, the temperature of the air and water was above +30°C, the pH ranged insignificantly, and the oxygen concentration was low. Artemia cysts were found throughout the year, however the nauplii were mostly available during spring and autumn seasons, while the adults were found in spring and summer months. Conclusion: The study concluded that the changes of the water parameters depended on season and especially on air temperature. The changes of Artemia population were different in examined years and depended on the water characteristics and especially on temperature and oxygen concentration. The obtained results could be helpful for the local climate changes consequences studies and their influence on aquatic biota.
