Abstract This paper describes a new approach to an automated layout design system for industrial plant piping. The routing system, which is the main part of this layout system, is composed of three steps, according to the practical layout design process. By dividing the layout design into the optimal routing phase (Step 1, Step 2) and the arrangement phase (Step 3), it is possible to design without depending on the routing order, and with small computer memory storage capacities. The optimal route is obtained by using the routing algorithm and heuristic search, based on expert knowledge. The arrangements are made by applying the enumeration method, taking the strong and weak constraints into account.

This study aimed at developing a Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game-based (MORPG) Learning system which enabled instructors to construct a game scenario and manage sharable and reusable learning content for multiple courses. It used the curriculum of “Introduction to Computer Science” as a study case to assess students' learning effectiveness on the subject of “computer network”. The sample was 56 freshman students, who were randomly assigned to two groups, one of which used the game-based learning and the other one the Web-based video lectures. Furthermore, this study also conducted the System Usability Scale (SUS) to measure satisfaction, usability and learnability of the developed management system for instructors. Five instructors were invited to participate in the practical use and evaluation. The results showed that game-based learning could be exploited as effective learning environments and game design system was usable and learnable for instructors to create learning games.

AbstractThis paper discusses the issues related to retrieval of cases in a case-based design system. The limitations of the conventional approaches are brought out, and this is followed by a description of a new approach to indexing and retrieval. This approach aims at capturing control knowledge required for retrieval from individual retrieval examples. Since this approach is based on past retrieval examples, we call it RBEX (Retrieval Based on EXamples). The proposed approach is implemented in a prototype system called CADREM. CADREM uses design methods used in solving past design problems to solve new problems. This is closer to the derivational analogy approach rather than the more common transformational analogy. CADREM has been tried in the domain of conceptual structural design of buildings. Sample outputs from CADREM are also included.

Purpose: In our institution, we initiated integrated learning in the format of Learning Modules (LM), interactive audio/visual modules developed by the faculty in alignment with session learning objectives, as pre-work for in-class sessions.?This pilot study examined  students’ perceptions of this new learning method and effectiveness in helping them achieve content mastery.  Methods: The instructor provided the LMs in advance, allowing a self-paced introduction of critical concepts that were subsequently discussed in detail during the in-class learning (ICL) session. A cognitive diagnostic assessment was used to analyze the student's performance on the exams. This involved identifying six skills, one or more of which were marked to be necessary for answering each exam question correctly. A question-by-skill Q-matrix was constructed, followed by analysis using a Deterministic Input, Noisy "And" Gate (DINA) model.   Results: 70% of the students rated the new approach as "Excellent or Good." 63% of the students attained skills necessary to answer questions that involved integrating information gained separately from LM and ICL sessions. However, only 23% of the students achieved mastery in all the 6 skills.   Conclusion: This integrative learning system allowed for time optimization since ICL sessions could focus on more interactive aspects of the content.

Online Teaching is growing popular and popular and many universities and organizations offer online teaching courses, such as Coursera, Edx and udacity. Case based teaching as a new approach to construct knowledge hierarchy and it uses 'trigger' cases to stimulate interest in a particular area of the curriculum so it always has a better effect than ordinary method. Based on this situation, the main aim of this paper is to design a web-based case learning system for courses in software engineering. The system allows students play as different roles and study different types of cases in the software engineering field. Thus compared with common teaching method, this system can stimulate students’ interest and enhance students' understanding of software engineering.

This article deals with a new approach to an intelligent analog circuit design. The iterative closed loop design methodology adopts an expert system approach to provide topological synthesis, the SPICE circuit simulator to evaluate the circuit performance and a new approach of the diagnostic expert system to provide advice on how to improve the design. Unlike previous design methods, this approach introduces formal circuit representation for both numerical and heuristic knowledge of the design system. The predicate logic circuit representation is proposed to introduce a new concept of a formal analog circuit description language. The language syntax and semantics provide precise symbolic description of analog circuits functionality at different levels of hierarchy and connectivities together with transistor sizes of CMOS circuits at the transistor level. Different levels of hierarchy with circuit structures and performance parameters are presented in detail. It is shown how sentence conversion rules of language grammar can be used to derive transistor level circuits from input performance specifications through all intermediate levels of hierarchy. The implementation of the methodology and associated experimental results for CMOS operational amplifier designs are presented.
