The article is devoted to the calculated regulation of the stress deformation state (SDS) of combined steel trusses, which allows to reduce the efforts in some sections of the structure by increasing the efforts in other and design evenly stressed structures as the most rational systems. It is shown that the calculated method of SDS regulation makes it possible to reduce steel consumption by up to 34%. Four methods of calculated SDS regulation are proposed. The advantages of combined structures are given: the concentration of materials and the possibility of designing them as low-element. As shown in the example, for the quantitative criterion of quality it is possible to use rationally the maximum potential energy of deformation. Dependences for calculation of the maximum potential energy of compressed stretched, and compressed-bent elements of rod-bearing steel structures are given.

Compression of a stiff film on a soft substrate may lead to surface wrinkling when the compressive strain reaches a critical value. Further compression may cause a wrinkling–folding transition, and the sinusoidal wrinkling mode can then give way to a period-doubling bifurcation. The onset of the primary bifurcation has been well understood, but a quantitative understanding of the secondary bifurcation remains elusive. Our theoretical analysis of the branching of surface patterns reveals that the wrinkling–folding transition depends on the wrinkling strain and the prestrain in the substrate. A characteristic strain in the substrate is adopted to determine the correlation among the critical strain of the period-doubling mode, the wrinkling strain and the prestrain in an explicit form. A careful examination of the total potential energy of the system reveals that beyond the critical strain of period-doubling, the sinusoidal wrinkling mode has a higher potential energy in comparison with the period-doubling mode. The critical strain of the period-doubling mode strongly depends on the deformation state of the hyperelastic solid, indicating that the nonlinear deformation behaviour of the substrate plays a key role here. The results reported here on the one hand provide a quantitative understanding of the wrinkling–folding transition observed in natural and synthetic material systems and on the other hand pave the way to control the wrinkling mode transition by regulating the strain state in the substrate.

This paper presents an overview of the fire safety analysis conducted for the steel trusses of Helsinki Olympic Stadium stand. The analysis were conducted using advanced calculation models (FDS and SAFIR). It is shown that the predefined design solution (R60 fire protection with sprinklers) can be replaced by fire protection to class R15 (no sprinkler system) without sacrificing safety when some other passive protection means are applied. The good design solution in this case required highly iterative design process and smooth co-operation between client, architects, structural engineers and fire safety consultants.

Main goal of this article is to introduce an used methodology of analyses for excavation of surge tank enlargement of HEC MATKA1. The way of combining of the methods for analyses of discontinual and continual media are explained. The main information’s about existing geological and geotechnical properties are also given, as a basis for analytical and numerical analyses. Some of the results from the stability analyses of structural controlled instabilities during excavation of water tank are presented. The newly secondary stress – deformation state as a result from enlargement (excavation) is analysed with program Z-SOIL.
