This chapter refers to Viking 1, which landed on the Plains of Gold, Chryse Planitia, on Mars on July 20, 1976, followed by Viking 2, which touched down on Utopia Planitia, six weeks later. It details the landing of the two Vikings in two different locations, which allowed human-directed science experiments to take place for the first time on the surface of Mars. It also mentions the planetary scientists who discovered that the Martian atmosphere was thin and mostly made of carbon dioxide. The chapter describes the Mariner-imaging surveys of the surface of Mars, which shows the planet covered with cratered plains, a small number of enormous volcanoes, and a significant number of narrow features that looked like ancient, dried-out riverbeds and lengthy outwash channels. It confirms whether the atmosphere of Mars contains any nitrogen, as the gas is critical to life on Earth.

To build carbon dioxide emission evaluation model in construction life cycle is the key link to make low-carbon research of theoretical studies head towards practical application. For the first time, residential quarter is selected as the object in the study, carbon dioxide emission management responsibility of owner and property being considered and carbon dioxide emission evaluation model in construction life cycle based on matlab as well as database of carbon dioxide factor being built initially. Net carbon dioxide emission information will be shown timely, then carbon dioxide emission and absorption can be adjusted by property management accordingly.

A novel phenanthroline-functionalized porous organic polymer (phen-POP) has been designed, and prepared for the first time without other reactive functional groups in the polymer skeleton. Post-synthetic metalation of phen-POP with IrCl3 afforded a single-site, highly active and selective catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to formate.

The process of releasing liquid carbon dioxide from a fire extinguisher is accompanied by a strong static charging of the plastic material making up the extinguisher discharge horn. Firefighters often report an electric shock when operating CO2 extinguishers, but the origin of this electrostatic hazard is largely unknown. Here, we begin to investigate this phenomenon, and test the hypothesis of plastic samples being tribocharged on contact with rapidly flowing solid CO2. Using Faraday pail measurements, we show that non-conductive polymers gain a net static charge when brought in and out of contact with dry ice (solid CO2). These measurements of charge sign and magnitude give indirect evidence helping to place solid CO2 for the first time on the triboelectric series. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) samples acquire a negative charge when rubbed against dry ice, whereas poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), glass, and nylon surfaces become positively charged. Therefore, we suggest the position of dry ice in the triboelectric series to be close to that of materials with stable cations and unstable anions, possibly locating it between PMMA and PVC.

Lines of the 2-0 and 3-0 bands of carbon monoxide and (many) bands of carbon dioxide appear prominently in the Connes' Mars spectrum [1]. Five carbon dioxide bands were measured to construct a curve of growth for CO2 lines formed in the Martian atmosphere [2]. A similar curve of growth was constructed for the 2-0 band of carbon monoxide. From these curves, we have computed the rotational temperature of the atmosphere, the surface pressure, and the abundance of CO and CO2. The surface pressure is found to be approximately equal to the CO2 partial pressure, i.e. ps ~ 5 mb. The CO concentration by volume was found to be slightly less than one part per thousand.

The CARS (coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering) technique has been used for the first time to observe directly the vibrational energy transfer between nitrogen N2 (X1Σ, ν = 1, 2) and carbon dioxide. The transfer-rate constants were determined as (1.0 ± 0.1) × 1011 cm3 mol−1 s−1 and (1.7 ± 0.4) × 1011 cm3 mol−1 s−1 for N2(ν = 1) and N2(ν = 2), respectively.
