The importance of efficiently processing letters and gaining orthographic automaticity has been stressed in first language (L1) reading research. While this level has been well defined in L1 reading, it has received little attention in EFL reading, especially when the writing system in L1 differs from the one in L2. This study investigates the influence of L1 literacy and knowledge of a writing system (Farsi) on reading and processing Roman letters in English. Sixty students were selected from an Iranian university. Results showed that the students process strings of letters in Farsi and Roman script in the same way and produce upward M-shaped patterns. The findings are discussed in the light of the research for Arabic and other scripts. The implications for classroom practices in facilitating foreign language learners’ reading ability are also explored.

The use and utility of auditory and visual tools in language teaching is a common practice. Films constitute one of the tools. It has been found that using films in language teaching is also effective in the development of vocabulary of foreign language learners. The literature review reveals that while films are used in foreign language teaching and there are many studies in this subject, very few studies have been done in our country and this is not enough. In this study, the development of Turkish vocabulary of foreign students through films has been discussed. Examples of activities aimed at the development of reading skills through films that teachers can use in foreign language are presented.

For most foreign language learners, understanding texts written in a foreign language is not an easy thing to do. To help learners in coping with this problem, when teaching reading teachers should provide them with a number of structured tasks that not only focus on students’ reading purpose, but also allow them to confront and reflect upon reading difficulties in socially interactive ways and one of the activities which is appropriate with these tasks is Directed Reading Activity (DRTA). The objective of the research is to compare the behavior of the English reading class students before and after the implementation of DRTA. The subjects of this research were 3 students of LBB Teladan Kudus. The conclusion is that the behavior of the students is better than that before the implementation of DRTA. The students become motivated, active, enthusiastic, paid attention to the teaching learning process, and got involved in the teaching learning process. Considering that DRTA has many benefits for learners especially dealing with learners’ behaviors, it is suggested that this activity should be used by the teacher when teaching reading.

Using literature in English language training provides a large number of advantages for learners such as developing their reading skills, contributing to better understanding of the foreign language, and providing an authentic model of language use. Combining reading with practice tests developed on the basis of the plotline, vocabulary, and grammar exhibited in each story can produce numerous benefits for foreign language learners and it is an effective tool for consolidating knowledge and developing skills to use the foreign language in different situations. The Language Trainer series published by Koala Press implements the idea of combining literary texts with tests designed to consolidate the learners’ knowledge of the specific vocabulary and grammar used in them. A number of books have already been published in this series, among which is O. HENRY (ABRIDGED). SHORT STORIES AND SIX TESTS. It is intended for anyone learning English who wants to improve their knowledge and skills in English.
