This study explores a written analysis on Facebook closed group housing advertisements of Central Michigan University (CMU) by formulating generic structure as well as identifying the language features. The generic structure is formulated by applying Swales’ moves and steps, while language features (tenses, pronouns, and lexical items) were analyzed by using AntConc software (Anthony, 2014). Generic structures show consistent moves and steps, while analysis on language features reveals that the advertisements are mostly composed in present tense, the pronoun “you” justifies the readers as the audience (30 appearances), and “looking” is the language feature of the set intention. Furthermore, the analysis on generic structures indicates that there are three moves which are consistently employed by the author: set intention with two steps (number and desired occupants), description of the place with three steps (location, cost, and selling points), and invitation to respond with two steps (imperatives and means to communicate). In addition, it is found that each posting is relatively brief with an average of only 96.5 words, 7.7 sentences, and 1.7 sentence fragments. Fragments make up 22% of total 77 sentences. Although this study has clearly generated valuable findings related to generic structure and language feature, it is still potential to be developed and applied in academic writing setting.

After more than thirty five years, multiple  intelligence theory of Howard Gardner is still used to help teaching and learning process in the classroom. Teachers can guide students to maximize their English language learning by optimizing their potential intelligences. Though so, discussion on multiple intelligence toward disadvantaged students is not adequate enough. This paper will figure out the usefulness of the Multiple intelligence theory to facilitate the disadvantaged students in learning English language  in the classroom especially who learn at non - fee paying school. Hopefully that this paper benefits for teachers who teach disadvantaged students, those who are working to improve the quality of education for disadvantaged students, and give a useful light to student teacher’s knowledge about the unique circumstances of disadvantaged students.

As one of the oldest genres, travel writing genre has evolved in many shapes and formats. Technology plays a great role in creating another subgenre with some differences from the printed formats. The generic features of travel writing on the internet are relatively simple in using words, only putting the key information of the described places and events, and most of the judgments are subjective evaluation. Yet, online articles provide more room for pictures that give benefits to the authors (to express their judgments), the readers (to create the image of the descriptive texts), as well as to the website traffics (for image is another tool to inquire and attract internet users). The technology also heavily influences the usage of further links and the second person pronoun “you.”

Every case of second language learning is different, but they are often influenced by systematic factors. What causes a learner to succeed or fail? In this case study, the language learning experiences of a single nonnative English speaker who successfully acquired English sheds light on the interplay between several of these aspects. An interview with a single adult subject reveals that for this particular individual, a high aptitude, as well as identity and personality characteristics that aligned with an openness to experience and learning in general, were more effective than factors of motivation. While identifying how and why a single individual may be successful or unsuccessful might not be generalizable to all learners, it can serve as a tool in helping to understand differences in L2 learning success.

This study uses genre analysis to analyze contemporary online text.  Through an analysis of the linguistic features of text from a highly specialized discourse community, perceived expert online reviews of electric guitar fuzz pedals, findings from this study provide insight into the relevance of online reviews. Although there is a layman quality to the actual production of the textual online reviews, genre analysis reveals hybridized genres, authorial power within occluded genre chains, subconscious marketing techniques, and manipulation of perceived expert online reviews. Findings from this study indicate that online reviews have complex occluded genre chains, which are not readily obvious when the reviews are read only for entertainment purposes.  This research has real world applications as relationships between textual generic qualities of online reviews and consumer spending habits are now easily acquired from online data-mining techniques to assist in targeting online consumers’ habits and to increase sales. Online reviews are now what consumers use to assist in shopping. Control of reviews translates to control of consumers’ shopping habits.
