IMPROVING STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN SPEAKING THROUGH BRAINSTORMING TECHNIQUE

The objective of this study is to find out whether Brainstorming Technique can improve students’ Achievement in speaking. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the second year students of SMA Swasta Katolik Budi Murni 3 Medan. The research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle was three meetings and the second cycle was two meetings. The instruments for collecting data used speaking test for quantitative data and used diary notes, questionnaires sheet, interview and observation sheet for qualitative data. Based on the speaking test result, the students’ score kept improving in every test. In orientation test, the mean score was 47,8. In the test of cycle 1 the mean score was 59,2 and the mean score in the test of cycle 2 was 70,1. In line with the data, it was found that the Brainstorming technique can improve students’ speaking achievement.

This study deals with the way to improve students’ achievement in speaking particularly through Two Stay Two Stray Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of of the research was class X-AP SMK Swasta Harapan Danau Sijabut in Asahan Regency that consisted of 34 students. The research was conducted in two cycles consisted of three meetings in each cycle. The instruments of collecting data for quantitative data used Speaking Test and instrument for analysis of qualitative data used observation, interview and questionnaire sheet. Based on the speaking test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In the test I the mean was 61,47, in the test II the mean was 67,41 and the test III the mean was 78,52. Based on observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that teaching learning process run well and lively. Students were active and interest in speaking. The using of Two Stay Two Stray Strategy is significantly improved students’ achievement in speaking.

Abstract This study concerrns with Improving the Students Writing Narrative Text by Applying Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Technique.The objective was to investigate improvement of students’ writing narrative text by applying Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Technique. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was grade VIII students of MTS Al- Hasanah Medan totalling to 29 students. They were taught writing by cooperative integrated reading and composition technique. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data and qualitative data (observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, and interview sheet). Based on the test score of quantitative data, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the orientation test the mean was 43, 2, in the cycle I test the mean was 55, 6. In the cycle II test the mean was 67.2. The percentage of orientation test was 10, 34%, cycle I test was 24, 13% and cycle II test was 86, 20%. The finding of the research showed that applying Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Technique significantly improved students’ writing. The qualitative data show that the students were more interested and motivated on writing through cooperative integrated reading and composition technique. It is suggested that teachers should apply cooperative integrated reading and composition technique as one of methods to improve students’ writing. ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph through Semantic Mapping Technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class (IX/A) SMP St. Petrus Medan that consisted of (30) students. The research was conducted in two cycles. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative data (Writing Test) and Qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet, interview and questionnaire sheet). Based on the data analyzing, it is found that students’ writing descriptive paragraph has improved from the orientation test to the test I and test II of the first and second cycle. It means that there is improvement in students’ writing descriptive paragraph affected by semantic mapping. It can be seen from the improvement of the students’ mean score for orientation test (52,5); test cycle I (62,04); and test cycle II (71,25). The students’ score continuously improved in each test. Therefore, it can be concluded that Semantic Mapping Technique can improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph.   Keywords: students’ achievement, writing, genre, semantic mapping technique

This study attempted to improve the students’ reading comprehensionachievement in descriptive text through Team Games Tournament (TGT) method.This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of theresearch was class IX SMP PAB 10 Medan Estate which consisted of 25 students.The research was conducted in two cycles and the first cycle consisted of fourmeetings the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The instruments forcollecting the data were quantitative data (reading evaluation) and qualitative data(diary note, observation sheet and interview sheet). Based on reading scores,students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the test I the mean was65,33, in the test II the mean was 71,72 and the test III the mean was 84,54.Basedon diary note, observation sheet and interview sheet, it was found that teachinglearningprocess ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic, and interested inreading. The result of the research showed that Team Games Tournament (TGT)method significantly improved students’ achievement in reading comprehensionespecially in reading descriptive text.

This study concerned with the improvement of students’ achievement in writing descriptive text by applying Questioning technique. The objective of this study was to discover whether questioning technique could significantly improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using classroom action research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of the research was class VIII-1 SMP Negeri 2 Lima Puluh. The number of the students was 30. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, questionnaire sheet as qualitative data. Based on the students’ writing test, the students’ score was improved in every test. In the first test, the mean score was 59.86. In the second test, the mean score was 67.80. In the last test, the mean score of the students was 74.63. In the line with the data, it was showed that questioning technique significantly improved students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

This research concerned on Improving the Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Texts through Prepare, Organize, Write, Edit, Rewrite (POWER) Strategy. In this research, the writer conducted classroom action research. Subject of this research were the second year students of SMK Negeri 1 Tanjung Pura Class XI AK consisted of 35 students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle was organized in four steps, namely Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. Cycle II was the improvement of Cycle I. There are two kinds of data collected during the research, qualitative and quantitative data. The instruments for the quantitative data was writing test while the qualitative data was gathered through Observation Sheet, Interview Sheet and Diary Notes. Findings showed that students’ score improved from Orientation Test to Test II. Based on the data analysis, Students’ mean in Orientation Test was 38.37, in Test I was 66.49, and Test II was 83.11. The conclusion is that the Prepare, Organize, Write, Edit, Rewrite (POWER) Strategy can improve the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

This study concerns with improving students vocabulary achievement in reading recount text through anagram technique. The objective was to investigate improvement of students’ achievement in vocabulary by applying anagram technique. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was grade VIII students of SMP SWASTA PEMBANGUNAN GALANG totalling to 29 students. They were taught vocabulary by anagram technique. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data and qualitative data (observation sheet and questionnaire sheet). Based on the test score of quantitative data, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the orientation test the mean was 43, 2, in the cycle I test the mean was 55, 6. In the cycle II test the mean was 67.2. The percentage of orientation test was 10, 34%, cycle I test was 24, 13% and cycle II test was 86, 20%. This study deals with improving students’ reading comprehension through Two Stay – Two Stray Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIIIC MTs. Lab. IKIP Al- Wasliyah Medan which consisted of 34 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and every cycle consisted of four meetings and two meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (multiple choice test) and qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet, and interview). In test I, the mean score was 63.28. in test II, the mean score was 67.96. and in test III the mean score was 72.96. It can be concluded that Two Stay – Two Stray Strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension.

This study deals with the improvement of the students’ achievement by using Outline technique. This research was conducted by applying classroom action research in two cycles. The subject of this research was one of a class in the first year student of SMU Yayasan Pendidikan Sultan Iskandar Muda. There were 35 students that participated in this research. The quantitative and qualitative data were gahtered in administrating  writing test and diary notes. The result of quantitative data obtained that the score of the students inproved from cycle I to cycle II which the mean of the pre-test was 70.6, the test of cycle I was 75.8, and the test of cycle II was 85,2. The result of the quanlitative data described that the using of the Outline technique help to improve the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph.

This research aims to: (1) describe and explain the process of speaking ability by picture series media of the students in B1 group at Bustanul Athfal Aisyiyah Keniten Ponorogo in academic year 2017-2018, (2) describe and explain the result of speaking ability by picture series media of the students in B1 group at Bustanul Athfal Aisyiyah Keniten Ponorogo in academic year 2017-2018. The picture series media chosen because it can to train of language skill and expression skill the child (speaking and telling story). The type of this research was classroom action research with Kemmis and Mc Taggart model. The subject of this research was the students of B1 group at Bustanul Athfal Aisyiyah Keniten Ponorogo consisting of 20 students. The data technique were collected by using observation, documentation and interview. Data analysis of this research used the qualitative data and quantitative data. The success indicator in this action research it said success when percentage of speaking ability of the students were 80%. Based on the result of the research show the speaking ability by the picture series able to improve the speaking ability of the students in B1 group at Bustanul Athfal Aisyiyah Keniten Ponorogo in academic year 2017-2018. It showed by the mean percentage of speaking ability by the picture series in pra cycle that have a good criteria that is 15%. In the first cycles percentage of speaking ability by the picture series that have a good criteria that is 30%. In the second cycle percentage of speaking ability by the picture series that have a good criteria increase to 85%. It shows the classroom action research it says success, because the percentage of speaking ability by the picture series of the students get success indicator that is 80%.
