Research background: The relationship between financial development and economic growth has been attracting attention in the field of economics since the times of the “great moderation”. Previous empirical studies still fail to put forward a general conclusion on whether and how financial development affects economic growth. This is particularly true due to the lack of empirical research on the matter in question for countries in transition. Purpose of the article: This study aims to contribute to bridging the gap in the financial development-growth nexus in transitional economies. Understanding the mechanism behind financial development and economic growth should assist policymakers in the design of efficient economic policies or avoiding/alleviating financial cycles. Methods: Using Granger causality test in frequency domain, which shows to have more power over standard time domain Granger causality test, as well as gross domestic product (GDP) and the monetary base (M2 — intermediate money), we investigated the finance-growth relationship in 19 Central, East, and Southeast European countries (CESEE) from 1991 to 2017. Findings & Value added: Study results show that financial development is important for growth in CESEE countries, thus supporting the “supply-leading” theories in general for countries in the sample. Our findings indicate that the relationship between financial development and economic growth exists in CESEE countries (with one exception — the Czech Republic) ranging from unidirectional (Albania, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Belarus, Estonia, Macedonia, Russia, Turkey), to bi-directional spectral Granger causality (Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ukraine).

PurposeThe paper examined the relationship between financial development and economic growth for the period 1996 to 2018 in Eswatini.Design/methodology/approachThe Autoregressive Distributed Lag bounds test (ARDL) was employed to determine the long-run and short-run dynamics of the link between the variables of interest. The Granger causality test was also performed to establish the direction of causality between financial development and economic growth.FindingsThe ARDL results revealed that there is a long-run relationship between financial development and economic growth. The Granger causality test revealed bidirectional causality between money supply and economic growth, and unidirectional causality running from economic growth to financial development. The results highlight that economic growth exerts a positive and significant influence on financial development, validating the demand following hypothesis in Eswatini.Practical implicationsPolicymakers should formulate policies that aims to engineer more economic growth. The policies should strike a balance between deploying funds necessary to stimulate investment and enhancing productivity in order to enliven economic growth in Eswatini.Originality/valueThe study investigates the finance-growth linkage using time series analysis. It determines the long-run and short-run dynamics of this relationship and examines the Granger causality outcomes.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to Analyze of the Relationship between Business Cycles and Bank Credit Extension: Evidence from South Africa. The study sought establish the direction of causality between economic growth and bank credit growth in South AfricaMethodology: The econometric methodology is used to augment results of the survey study. Granger causality test technique is applied to the variables of interest to test for direction of causation between variables. The study uses quarterly data for the period of 1980: Q1 to 2013: Q4. Business cycles are determined and measured by Gross Domestic Product at market prices while bank-granted credit is proxied by credit extension to the private sector.Results: Results revealed that, that there is a stable long-run relationship between macro-economic business cycles and real credit growth in South Africa. The results show that economic growth significantly causes and stimulates bank credit. The Granger causality test provides evidence of unidirectional causal relationship with direction from economic growth to credit extension for South Africa. The study results indicate that the case for demand-following hypothesis is stronger than supply-leading hypothesis in South Africa. Economic growth spurs credit market development in South Africa.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: It proposes practical policy prescriptions to address challenges currently facing South Africa. The other major contribution of this study is that it shall open new avenues for further research on finding causality of the relationship between various proxies of economic growth and financial development adopting the VAR framework

This study investigates the relationships among tourism, financial development, FDI inflows and economic growth in Jordan for the (1985-2016) period. The current paper has used bounds testing approach to confirm the relationship among the study variables. Multivariate Granger causality test is used to determine the directions of causality between the study variables. The results confirmed that there is evidenced of relationships among tourism, financial development, FDI inflows and economic growth. Also, the multivariate Granger causality test confirmed deferent directions of causal among the study variables.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the validity of the question of whether oil dependence has a negative impact on the relationship between financial development and economic growth in Yemen. Design/methodology/approach The auto-regressive distributed lag approach for cointegration is used to examine the relationship between financial development and economic growth by capturing the impact of oil dependence on this relationship. The Granger causality test, based on a vector error correction model (VECM) framework, is used to investigate the causal relationships between financial development and economic growth. Findings The most interesting finding is the negative sign of interaction term between financial development and oil dependence, which implies that the positive effect of financial development on economic growth decreases with the increasing oil dependence. The result of the VECM Granger causality test revealed the existence of unidirectional causality running from financial development to economic growth. Research limitations/implications The short sample period and the worry of losing degrees of freedom limited us when including control variables in the model. If the data are available in the future, other control variables can be added. Practical implications The government should reduce the level of oil dependence in Yemen by diversifying the country’s economy. Accelerating the pace and efficiency of the financial sector will bear fruitful returns in this regard. The government could achieve this strategy by playing a more proactive role in encouraging the expansion of credit to enable the financial sector to provide a more efficient intermediary role in mobilizing domestic savings and channeling them to productive investments across various economic sectors. Originality/value This is the first study to examine the impact of oil dependence on the finance-growth nexus in Yemen. A new indicator for oil dependence is also proposed.

This paper examines empirically the relation between tourism and economic growth in Saudi Arabia. The authors try to justify how tourism contributes to the economic growth of Saudi Arabia. There are applied descriptive statistics, unit root test, VAR model and Granger Causality test as an econometric methodology to examine the connection between tourism and economic growth in Saudi Arabia for the annual data in the period from 1990 to 2018. The main empirical results of the study find out that tourism affects positively the economic growth in Saudi Arabia. Also, there is found a positive nexus among tourism and economic growth. Furthermore, CO2 emissions and financial development impact positively the tourism sector, while trade openness predicts a negative effect on tourism. Additionally, CO2 emissions, financial development, and trade openness have a positive impact on economic growth in Saudi Arabia. Finally, the Granger causality test provides evidence of bidirectional nexus between tourism and economic growth in Saudi Arabia. This paper contributes to the current research by explaining the causal nexus among tourism and economic growth in Saudi Arabia during the period from 1990 to 2018, applying a vector autoregressive model and Granger Causality.

In order to explore the relationship between China's scientific and technological progress and economic growth, granger test is been used on investment in science and technology and economic growth based on the sample period (1995-2010) of economic data.The experimental results show that : the scientific and technological progress and economic growth are each other's Granger causes. The paper divide the investment of science and technology into the manpower investment and financial investment in the analysis of economic growth and investment of science and technology the causality, then do Granger causality test on economic growth index GDP.

This paper aims at investigating the cointegration relationship between industrial economic growth and environmental pollutions from the timing dimension by using three types of environmental pollution indicators of industrial emissions and going further to test whether this relationship is bidirectional Granger causality. Firstly, the cointegration analysis’ result shows that the relationship between industrial economic growth and environmental quality may not meet the hypothesis of EKC curve. In the timing period analyzed, the relationship is linear and positive. Hence, promoting the relationship to be negative when only relying on self-regulation of the market will probably not be achieved. Secondly, based on cointegration test, this paper goes further to conduct Granger causality test of cointegration relationship. The result shows industrial economic growth causes pollution emission but it is not true vice versa. The reasons possibly include that that the technological progress in recent years may not embody on the reduction of pollution emission intensity, the absence of resources product market, the lack of tradable emission permits market and no effective incentives of green production behaviors of enterprises to react up on encouraging enterprises’ development. These generate external pressure to the transformation of industrial economic growth pattern.
