The article is focused on the possible ways of accumulating chemical elements (zinc, copper, chromium, nickel, lead, mercury) in the organs of aquatic organisms. In the course of the study, the coefficients of accumulating the chemical elements in the organs and tissues were calculated for the Russian (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, Brandt, 1833) and Persian sturgeons (Acipenser persicus, Borodin, 1897) relative to the water of the northwestern part of the Caspian Sea, bottom sediments and the main objects of their food (Khvalyn goby (Neogobius caspius), Sandpiper goby (Neogobius fluviatilis), Caspian goblin (Benthophilus microcephalus), roach (Rutilus rutilus caspicus)). The studies were carried out according to the standard method of atomic absorption spectrometry. It is shown that the main source of accumulating the studied chemical elements in the organs and tissues of the Russian and Persian sturgeons is the water of the northwestern part of the Caspian Sea. It was found that the bottom sediments of the Caspian Sea act as an additional source of zinc and mercury found in the liver and kidneys of sturgeon species. Based on the calculated accumulation coefficients of chemical elements, there was revealed a predominantly alimentary nature of accumulating copper, nickel and mercury in the organs of both sturgeon species.

The purpose of the research was to study accumulation of mercury and selenium in muscles and liver of Russian and Persian sturgeons caught in the Caspian Sea. Analysis of the data revealed preferential accumulation of mercury and selenium in liver compared to muscle tissues of both species. The article shows that the degree of mercury accumulation in the liver and muscles of the Persian sturgeon was higher than of the Russian. Correlation analysis of data showed that mercury content in the sturgeon liver and muscles statistically significantly depended on age, length and weight of the fish. In the course of these studies there has been identified a direct correlation between selenium content in muscle tissue and body weight of fish. The results of the analysis indicate that the accumulation of mercury and selenium in Persian and Russian sturgeon species is stipulated by their physiological characteristics and properties of the chemical elements. Mercury concentration in liver and muscles of the tested species is little, which corresponds to the standards adopted in Russia. The level of selenium in the liver increases with the concentration of mercury in it, which confirms the defensive function of selenium against heavy metals.

Data on the abundance of heterotrophic bacterioplankton and bacteriobenthos in the northern and middle parts of the Caspian during the period from 2013 to 2017 are presented. In the waters of the northern part of the Caspian, a peak in the number of saprotrophs and crude oil degraders was recorded in 2013. In the middle part of the Caspian and in the region of the Mangyshlak regression, high numbers of heterotrophic bacteria were recorded in 2013 and 2016. The biodiversity of bacterioplankton in the surveyed areas is almost the same; the species composition of saprotrophs and crude oil degraders is identical. In the bottom sediments of the northern and middle parts of the Caspian Sea, two peaks of saprotrophic bacteriobenthos development (in 2013 and 2016) were recorded; in the region of the Mangyshlak threshold, the concentration of saprotrophs remained stable. The number of crude oil degraders was inferior to those of saprotrophs, while the proportion of crude oil degraders to saprotrophs changed annually. The species composition of saprotrophs is relatively stable, the biodiversity of oil-oxidizing bacteriobenthos has changed in the direction of increasing the proportion of non-fermenting bacteria. Constant changes in the ratio of the number of saprotrophs and crude oil degraders, together with the transformations of the dominant groups of the species composition of bacteria, indicated the instability of bacteriobenthos, and, as a result, the vulnerability of the microecosystem of bottom sediments under changing environmental conditions.

Russian (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii), Persian (A. persicus) and Siberian (A. baerii) sturgeons are closely related ‘Ponto-Caspian’ species. Investigation of their population structure is an important problem, the solution of which determines measures for conservation of these species. According to previous studies, ‘baerii-like’ mitotypes were found in the Caspian Sea among 35% of Russian sturgeon specimens, but were not found in Persian sturgeons. This confirms genetic isolation of the Persian sturgeon from the Russian sturgeon in the Caspian Sea. However, in order to clarify the relationships of these species it is necessary to analyze nuclear DNA markers. The amplified fragment length polymorphism (method) allows estimating interpopulation and interspecific genetic distances using nuclear DNA markers. In the present study, four samples were compared: Persian sturgeons from the South Caspian Sea, Russian sturgeons from the Caspian Sea and the Sea of Azov, and Siberian sturgeons from the Ob’ River, which are close to these two species, but are also clearly morphologically and genetically distinct from them. For the AFLP method, eight pairs of selective primers were used. The analysis revealed that the Siberian sturgeon has formed a separate branch from the overall Persian-Russian sturgeons cluster, which was an expected result. In addition, the results showed that the Caspian Russian sturgeon is closer to the Persian sturgeon from the Caspian Sea than to the Russian Sturgeon from the Sea of Azov. The present DNA marker data confirm that despite the genetic isolation of the Persian sturgeon from the Russian sturgeon in the Caspian Sea, the Persian sturgeon is a young species.

The offshore zone of the western coast of the Caspian Sea is one of the most highly productive. Of the 63 species of fish that live in the Caspian Sea, 34 species are found on the Krainovsky coast, 42 % of which are carp. The most numerous is the roach Rutilus rutilus caspicus (Jakowlev, 1870), which makes up 50–86 % of the number of semi-passerine and river fish. The article presents the results of studies of the peculiarities of the biology of the roach Rutilus rutilus caspicus of the Krainovsky coast of the Caspian Sea. The roach is noted in the catches constantly. Her age in the networks ranges from 2 to 10 years. The share of 3-5-year-olds accounts for 81 %. Females in catches make up 66 %, males - 34 %. The parameters of the Bertalanfi equation are characterized by the following values: L =38.8 cm, K = 0.12, t° = -2.67. The fecundity of the roach on average is 30.2 thousand eggs and tends to increase with increasing length and weight of the fish. As the roach grows, the composition of its food changes significantly. The maximum fed roach length from 10 to 20 cm.

Mercury and lead are not essential elements and have a high degree of toxicity to all groups of living organisms, including hydrobionts. In turn, the accumulation of dangerous chemical elements in the primary trophic units of marine ecosystems is also reflected in the high level of accumulation and toxication of fish-valuable objects of fishing. As part of the study of the ecological state of the biota of the Volga-Caspian basin, there is a need to study the concentrations of heavy metals such as mercury and lead. The aim of the work is to study the content of mercury and lead in some invertebrate species of the Caspian Sea. The main source of mercury and lead in the body of the studied species is the water of the north-western part of the Caspian Sea. Among the studied taxonomic groups of organisms, mercury accumulators were all species of mollusks, as well as Balanus improvises and Rhithropanopeus harrisii. The lead concentrating organisms were Cerastoderma lamarcki and Mytilaster lineatus, Rhithropanopeus harrisii, and Balanus improvises.
