Resumo Tentar diferenciar as histórias inventadas das histórias reais sobre a vida do escritor espanhol Ramón del Valle-Inclán (1866-1936) não é tarefa fácil. De fato, o próprio escritor colaborou de maneira ativa e intencional no processo de fabulação sobre sua vida pessoal. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar as biografias sobre Valle-Inclán, verificando como o autor, conscientemente, se movimentava entre as categorias biografia, autobiografia e autoficção. Tomando como referência o posicionamento de Valle-Inclán sobre o evento histórico do Carlismo, na vida pessoal e na ficção e com base nas ideias de Alberca (2007), Arfuch (2010) e Lejeune (2014), concluímos que Valle-Inclán criou uma narrativa ficcional para sua vida pessoal, atuando como um personagem conservador, histriônico, extravagante. A estética do esperpento, de sua própria autoria, contribui no processo de criação ficcional de si.

In 1929 and 1932, Valle-Inclán published two versions of a fragment from his novel Advantage of Swords. A Russian character is at the center of the plot: the narrative revolves around him, his appearance and personality are described in detail, he talks a lots and delivers speeches, while his name goes through a change. He is called Petr Kropotkin in the fi rst version and Mikhail Bakunin in the second one. The writer wanted to describe a Russian revolutionary, an anarchist, well-known in Spain — and for him it hardly mattered which one he would take: both persons were equally suitable for the role.

Me ocupo de aproximaciones históricas a la "modernidad" y, en particular, de su aplicación a las contribuciones "modernas" de Valle-Inclán (1886-1936). La modernidad es ya en sí un tema de historia complejo; los códigos modernistas se han propagado de tal suerte que cualquier comunicación engendrada sobre la modernidad tiene múltiples sentidos-la mayoría de las veces contradictorios. En cuanto a las participaciones iberoamericanas, poco se ha escrito que no caiga, forzosamente, en discursos apologéticos: se trata de las quejas de los de la "periferia" que se han excluido del "centro". Así que tanto las modernidades iberoamericanas como los experimentos de Valle-Inclán, dos de los capítulos de la modernidad, no son temas de historia menos complejos.

Este ensayo propone un close reading de los fragmentos en los que aparece Manuela, la hija loca del dictador en la novela de Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Tirano Banderas (1926). Se analizan los semas sobre la herencia que atraviesan el texto y la importancia de las marcas corporales en un personaje que es leído como artefacto cultural. A partir del estudio de las fuentes genésicas de la obra así como el entrecruzamiento de las categorías discursivas raza y género, se argumenta que esos pasajes son centrales para las ramificaciones interpretativas de la novela.

The Spanish dramatist, novelist, and poet Ramón del Valle-Inclán was a major figure of the Generation of 1898, a group of writers that reinvigorated Spanish letters in the wake of the Spanish-American War of 1898, which marked the end of Spain’s colonial empire. Valle-Inclán was one of the most radical dramatists of the early twentieth century and worked to subvert the traditionalism of Spanish drama. Influenced by French modernism and Symbolism, he later moved to more experimental styles and is known for the creation of the ‘esperento,’ an absurd and grotesquely satirical mix of comedy and tragedy. This style expresses the tragic meaning of Spanish life, which Valle considered to be a ‘grotesque deformation’ of European civilization. He held several administrative and teaching appointments, which allowed him to dedicate his life to writing while providing for his wife and five children.

Jacinto Benavente y Martínez was a Spanish dramatist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Author of more than 170 plays, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922. His selection was controversial as many argued that the Generación del 98 and modernist writers such as Miguel de Unamuno, Ramón del Valle-Inclán, and Rubén Darío had greater merits. Nevertheless, Benavente had a significant and revitalizing influence on Spanish drama, ushering in a shift from melodramatic verse to prose comedy and favoring subtle dialogue over the impulsive action typical of the dramas of José de Echegaray.
