A transportation problem deals with two different problems balanced transportation problem or unbalanced transportation problem. This paper points out how Goyal’s modification of Vogel’s approximation method for the unbalanced transportation problem can be improved by subtracting or adding suitable constants to the cost matrix, rows and columns of the cost matrix. In this paper, a new method is proposed for solving unbalanced transportation problem which gives optimal or very near to optimal solution.

In this chapter, the authors propose a new approach to analyze the Solid Transportation Problem (STP). This new approach considers the multi-choice programming into the cost coefficients of objective function and stochastic programming, which is incorporated in three constraints, namely sources, destinations, and capacities constraints, followed by Cauchy's distribution for solid transportation problem. The multi-choice programming and stochastic programming are combined into a solid transportation problem, and this new problem is called Multi-Choice Stochastic Solid Transportation Problem (MCSSTP). The solution concepts behind the MCSSTP are based on a new transformation technique that will select an appropriate choice from a set of multi-choice, which optimize the objective function. The stochastic constraints of STP converts into deterministic constraints by stochastic programming approach. Finally, the authors construct a non-linear programming problem for MCSSTP, and by solving it, they derive an optimal solution of the specified problem. A realistic example on STP is considered to illustrate the methodology.

Transportation models are of multidisciplinary fields of interest. In classical transportation approaches, the flow of allocation is controlled by the cost entries and/or manipulation of cost entries – so called Distribution Indicator (DI) or Total Opportunity Cost (TOC). But these DI or TOC tables are formulated by the manipulation of cost entries only. None of them considers demand and/or supply entry to formulate the DI/ TOC table. Recently authors have developed weighted opportunity cost (WOC) matrix where this weighted opportunity cost matrix is formulated by the manipulation of supply and demand entries along with cost entries as well. In this WOC matrix, the supply and demand entries act as weight factors. Moreover by incorporating this WOC matrix in Least Cost Matrix, authors have developed a new approach to find out Initial Basic Feasible Solution of Transportation Problems. But in that approach, WOC matrix was invariant in every step of allocation procedures. That is, after the first time formulation of the weighted opportunity cost matrix, the WOC matrix was invariant throughout all allocation procedures. On the other hand in VAM method, the flow of allocation is controlled by the DI table and this table is updated after each allocation step. Motivated by this idea, we have reformed the WOC matrix as Sequentially Updated Weighted Opportunity Cost (SUWOC) matrix. The significance difference of these two matrices is that, WOC matrix is invariant through all over the allocation procedures whereas SUWOC   matrix is updated in each step of allocation procedures. Note that here update (/invariant) means changed (/unchanged) the weighted opportunity cost of the cells. Finally by incorporating this SUWOC matrix in Least Cost Matrix, we have developed a new approach to find out Initial Basic Feasible Solution of Transportation Problems.  Some experiments have been carried out to justify the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed SUWOC-LCM approach. Experimental results reveal that the SUWOC-LCM approach outperforms to find out IBFS. Moreover sometime this approach is able to find out optimal solution too. GANIT J. Bangladesh Math. Distribution activities in company which related in distribution sometimes have a problems, one of the problems is transportation problem. To solve that problem can be used a transportation model to obtain the distribution route so the cost that come out is more minimum. The aim of this research is to compare the initial solution of RAM and IVAM and to know the distribution route in distribution of bottled water in the CV. Prasarana Fortuna Prima so obtained the minimum distribution costs after optimality test using MODI. The results showed that RAM gave a lower initial solution than IVAM and the initial solution of RAM was optimum after optimality test using MODI with a distribution routes is from depo Klungkung to Toko Bintang, Toko Subur, Toko Cahaya Melati, Toko Mawar Sari, and Coco Mart Ubud, from depo Kapal to CV. Sumber Jaya, Toko Sol Mandala, and Toko Kayana, from depo Mahendradatta to Toko Sinar Wangi and Toko Aris.

For twenty decades, there is a visible ever forward advancement in the technology of mobility, vehicles and transportation system in general. However, there is no "cure-all" remedy ideal enough to solve all life problems but mathematics has proven that if the problem can be determined, it is most likely solvable. New methods and applications will keep coming to making sure that life problems will be solved faster and easier. This study is to adopt a mathematical transportation problem in the Coca-Cola company aiming to help the logistics department manager of the Asejire and Ikeja plant to decide on how to distribute demand by the customers and at the same time, minimize the cost of transportation. Here, different algorithms are used and compared to generate an optimal solution, namely; North West Corner Method (NWC), Least Cost Method (LCM) and Vogel’s Approximation Method (VAM). The transportation model type in this work is the Linear Programming as the problems are represented in tables and results are compared with the result obtained on Maple 18 software. The study shows various ways in which the initial basic feasible solutions to the problem can be obtained where the best method that saves the highest percentage of transportation cost with for this problem is the NWC. The NWC produces the optimal transportation cost which is 517,040 units.

In 1985, Boehlert (Fish. Bull. 83: 103–117) suggested that fish age could be estimated from otolith measurements. Since that time, a number of inferential techniques have been proposed and tested in a range of species. A review of these techniques shows that all are subject to at least one of four types of bias. In addition, they all focus on assigning ages to individual fish, whereas the estimation of population parameters (particularly proportions at age) is usually the goal. We propose a new flexible method of inference based on mixture analysis, which avoids these biases and makes better use of the data. We argue that the most appropriate technique for evaluating the performance of these methods is a cost–benefit analysis that compares the cost of the estimated ages with that of the traditional annulus count method. A simulation experiment is used to illustrate both the new method and the cost–benefit analysis.

The present paper attempts to study the unbalanced fuzzy transportation problem so as to minimize the transportationcost of products when supply, demand and cost of the products are represented by fuzzy numbers. In this paper, authorsuse Roubast ranking technique to transform trapezoidal fuzzy numbers to crisp numbers and propose a new algorithm tofind the fuzzy optimal solution of unbalanced fuzzy transportation problem. The proposed algorithm is more efficient thanother existing algorithms like simple VAM and is illustrated via numerical example. Also, a comparison between the resultsof the new algorithm and the result of algorithm using simple VAM is provided.

This paper mainly focuses on a new approach to find an optimal solution of a fuzzy linear programming problem with the help of Fuzzy Dynamic Programming. Linear programming deals with the optimization of a function of variables called an objective function, subject to a set of linear inequalities called constraints. The objective function may be maximizing the profit or minimizing the cost or any other measure of effectiveness subject to constraints imposed by supply, demand, storage capacity, etc., Moreover, it is known that fuzziness prevails in all fields. Hence, a general linear programming problem with fuzzy parameters is considered where the variables are taken as Triangular Fuzzy Numbers. The solution is obtained by the method of FDP by framing fuzzy forward and fuzzy backward recursive equations. It is observed that the solutions obtained by both the equations are the same. This approach is illustrated with a numerical example. This feature of the proposed approach eliminates the imprecision and fuzziness in LPP models. The application of Fuzzy set theory in the field of dynamic Programming is called Fuzzy Dynamic Programming.

This paper investigates the solution for an inverse of a parametric nonlinear transportation problem, in which, for a certain values of the parameters, the cost of the unit transportation in the basic problem are adapted as little as possible so that the specific feasible alternative become an optimal solution. In addition, a solution stability set of these parameters was investigated to keep the new optimal solution (feasible one) is unchanged. The idea of this study based on using a tuning parameters λ∈Rm in the function of the objective and input parameters υ∈Rl in the set of constraint. The inverse parametric nonlinear cost transportation problem P(λ,υ), where the tuning parameters λ∈Rm in the objective function are tuned (adapted) as less as possible so that the specific feasible solution x∘ has been became the optimal ones for a certain values of υ∈Rl, then, a solution stability set of the parameters was investigated to keep the new optimal solution x∘ unchanged. The proposed method consists of three phases. Firstly, based on the optimality conditions, the parameter λ∈Rm are tuned as less as possible so that the initial feasible solution x∘ has been became new optimal solution. Secondly, using input parameters υ∈Rl resulting problem is reformulated in parametric form P(υ). Finally, based on the stability notions, the availability domain of the input parameters was detected to keep its optimal solution unchanged. Finally, to clarify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm not only for the inverse transportation problems but also, for the nonlinear programming problems; numerical examples treating the inverse nonlinear programming problem and the inverse transportation problem of minimizing the nonlinear cost functions are presented.
