Pulau Bunyu di Propinsi Kalimantan Utara memiliki sumberdaya hayati ekosistem perairan laut yang berlimpah dan bernilai ekonomis yang tinggi, dimana masyarakat pulau Bunyu memanfaatkan potensi ekosistem perairan laut digunakan sebagai potensi perikanan dalam hal penangkapan dengan menggunakan alat tangkap bubu dasar (bottom fish pot). Hasil tangkapan yang bernilai ekonomis berupa ikan kakap merah dan ikan kerapu yang terdapat di perairan ekosistem laut pulau Bunyu. Tujuan penelitian adalah menganalisis pertumbuhan dan struktur ukuran ikan kakap merah (Lutjanus argentimaculatus) serta ikan kerapu lumpur (Epinephalus malabaricus) yang berasal dari perairan pulau Bunyu. Data yang diteliti berupa parameter pertumbuhan yaitu panjang total dan panjang standar, berat total, jenis kelamin, tingkat kematangan gonad, dan berat gonad. Hasil penelitian ikan kakap paling banyak tertangkap ukuran panjang 40,49-47,61 cm dan bobot 990,05-1.451,68 gram. Pada ikan kerapu lumpur dengan ukuran panjang 43,73-50,13 cm dan berat 800,94-1.308,70 gram. Sifat pertumbuhan pada ikan kakap merah adalah allometrik negatif. Nilai indeks kondisi berbentuk kurus pada sampel ikan kakap merah. Sifat pertumbuhan pada sampel ikan kerapu pada variabel panjang total dengan berat total bersifat allometrik positif dan pada variabel panjang standar dan panjang cagak dengan berat total bersifat allometrik negatif.

We examined the physical and geochemical effects of sediment on the uptake of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) into marine sediment feeders and their transfer to higher trophic fauna. Sediment PBDEs increased with % total organic carbon (%TOC), organic carbon (OC) flux and grain size (%fines). Tissue PBDE variance was best explained ( R2 = 0.70) by sediment acid volatile sulfides (AVS), PBDEs, and organic lability and input, with the highest values near wastewater outfalls. Dry weight tissue/sediment PBDEs declined with increasing sediment PBDEs, resulting in tissue dilution (ratio <1) at >10 000 pg/g in harbours. Ratios also decreased with increasing %fines, resulting in regional differences. These patterns imply that high levels of fines and high sediment concentrations make PBDEs less bioavailable. Dry weight PBDEs increased >100× between background deposit feeders and predators (polychaetes, crabs, bottom fish, seal), but lipid normalized PBDEs barely increased (<1.3%), suggesting remarkably high uptake in low-lipid sediment feeders, and that PBDEs don’t accumulate at higher trophic levels, but lipid content does. Filter feeders had lower lipid-normalized PBDEs than deposit feeders, highlighting the importance of food resources in higher trophic fauna for bioaccumulation. The most profound congener change occurred with sediment uptake, with nona/deca-BDEs declining and tetra-hexa-BDEs increasing. Harbour sediment feeders had more deca-BDEs than other samples, suggesting PBDEs mostly pass unmodifed through them. Deca-BDEs persist patchily in all tissues, reflecting variable dependence on sediment/pelagic food.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether boat-based deployment of remote underwater video cameras is effective for surveying fish assemblages in the deepest reaches of two large tropical rivers in north-eastern Australia. In addition, we compared fish assemblages recorded on baited versus unbaited cameras, and evaluated the sampling effort (duration of recording) required to estimate fish assemblages using remote underwater videos. We found that fish assemblages differed according to the depth, with statistically significant differences largely attributable to the prevalence of small-bodied species (Ambassis sp., Melanotaenia sp. and Pseudomugil signifer recorded in shallow (0.4–2.0m) and intermediate (2.1–4.9m) depths, and larger-bodied fish species (>10cm TL), such as Lutjanus argentimaculatus, Mesopristes argenteus and Caranx sexfasciatus, in deep water (>5.0m). Estimates of fish assemblage attributes generally stabilised after 60min recording duration, suggesting that interrogation of video footage beyond this duration may not be cost-effective. We conclude that depth is an important consideration when surveying large and deep river fish assemblages and that where water clarity is favourable, underwater video provides one of the means by which an assemblage can be investigated across the entire depth profile.
