The number of firms involved in the production of barrels from white oak (quercus petraea L,) is small. The production of wood barrels is quite complex and with a low exploitation coefficient. We think it is in the interests of firms to know how much the coefficient of use of sawn material for these types of products is. For the study we have chosen the firm "Beha-N" in Rahovec, which mainly deals with the production of oak wood barrels. The sawn material taken in the study was of a good quality. To do the tests we used weighing methods, as its volume was difficult to measure since it was half milled. Tests were conducted for the production of barrel details with a volume of 50, 30 and 20 litters, which are most widely used by the costumers. For the realization used by the firm were taken into account the dimensions and technology. From the measurement data it turned out that the weight of the sawn timber was about 250kg. The results of these weights were exchanged in volume and percentage and they are shown in final results.

Vescalagin is an oak wood ellagitannin, which is biosynthesized in sapwood and insolubilized during the conversion of sapwood to heartwood. The insolubilization of this tannin was attributed to the conjugation of cell wall components, such as cellulose and lignin; however, the chemical mechanism is unclear. In this study, we examined the reactions of vescalagin with glucose and sinapylaldehyde as model experiments for the conjugation of vescalagin with cellulose and lignin, respectively. Heating vescalagin with glucose and sinapylaldehyde afforded conjugation products, the structures of which were determined by spectroscopic methods. The condensation of vescalagin with glycerol proceeded at room temperature. These results suggest that the insolubilization of vescalagin is caused by the formation of covalent bonds at the C-1 benzylic carbon of vescalagin with alcohols and α,β-conjugated carbonyl compounds.

AbstractMany researches have been conducted to investigate creep behavior of wood; however, the effects of structure on wood creep behavior remain unclear. Therefore, the effects of existence and distribution of earlywood vessel belt on creep behavior of white oak (Quercus alba L.) wood were investigated by dynamic thermal mechanical analyzer (DMA) with double cantilever bending in this study. Besides, a comparative numerical modeling simulation on strain curves of white oak specimens was completed using Burger and Five-parameter model. Results revealed that instantaneous strain and 45-min strain of specimens decreased with increase in the distance between earlywood vessel belt and stress acting surface obviously. Additionally, instantaneous strain and 45-min strain of specimens remarkably increased with increase in temperature from 20 to 80 °C. An obvious bending creep behavior was observed with increase in temperature from 20 to 80 °C. Both Burger and Five-parameter model can effectively simulate the creep behavior of white oak specimens with R2 values greater than 0.90. Furthermore, Five-parameter model illustrated a better fitting effect than Burger model in the final creep stage due to the introduction of a non-linear creep strain growth expression. It concluded that creep behavior of white oak wood strongly depends on the existence and distribution of earlywood vessel belt.

Recently we have been investigating a class of nickel-base superalloys which possess substantial room temperature ductility. This improvement in ductility is directly related to improvements in grain boundary strength due to increased boundary cohesion through control of detrimental impurities and improved boundary shear strength by controlled grain boundary micros true tures.For these investigations an experimental nickel-base superalloy was doped with different levels of sulphur impurity. The micros tructure after a heat treatment of 1360°C for 2 hr, 1200°C for 16 hr consists of coherent precipitates of γ’ Ni3(Al,X) in a nickel solid solution matrix.
