Abstract The subject of the research is a footbridge across the river Brda in Bydgoszcz. The measurements of the footbridge displacements with the test load were undertaken. The paper presents the results of the measurements and compares them with the theoretical results obtained using the finite element method (FEM). On this basis, discrepancy between actual work of the structure and numerical simulations was found. Attempt to explain the reasons for the observed differences and direction of further research were included in the conclusions.

In the paper, modeling of the effect of road vibrations on displacements in the slide zone, taking into account impulse waves is presented. The analysis was carried out for an area in which landslide movements occurred in 2010. The analysis concerning the influence of the vibration source’s speed was carried out. The influence of the generated load on the values of vertical displacements created in the slide zone was analyzed. Loads from moving trucks have been included in the form of kinematic impact. Numerical simulations were carried out using a program based on the Finite Element Method.

This paper is concerned with the convergence of the h-p version of the finite element method for three dimensional Poisson problems with edge singularity on quasi-uniform meshes. First, we present the theoretical results for the convergence of the h-p version of the finite element method with quasi-uniform meshes for elliptic problems on polyhedral domains on smooth functions in the framework of Jacobi-weighted Sobolev spaces. Second, we investigate and analyze numerical results for three dimensional Poission problems with edge singularity. Finally, we verified the theoretical predictions by the numerical computation.

We designed, realized, and characterised an imaging Mueller matrix ellipsometry setup for the pixelwise measurement of the Mueller matrices in microscope images. Our setup is capable of performing measurements in reflection as well as in transmission in a broad range of angles of incidence for wavelengths between 400 nm and 700 nm. We compared measurements of specially designed nanostructured samples with AFM and SEM measurements as well as with numerical simulations using the finite element method.

This work investigates the effect of eardrum perforations and myringosclerosis in the mechanical behavior of the tympano-ossicular chain. A 3D model for the tympano-ossicular chain was created and different numerical simulations were made, using the finite element method. For the eardrum perforations, three different calibers of perforated eardrums were simulated. For the micro perforation (0.6 mm of diameter) no differences were observed between the perforated and normal eardrum. For the numerical simulation of the eardrum with the largest perforation caliber, small displacements were obtained in the stapes footplate, when compared with the model representative of normal ossicular-chain, at low frequencies, which is related with major hearing loss in this frequency range. For the numerical simulations of myringosclerosis, the larger differences in the displacement field between the normal and modified model were obtained in the umbo. When observing the results in the stapes footplate, there were no significant differences between the two models, which is in accordance to the clinical data. When simulating an eardrum perforation along with myringosclerosis, there is a decrease in the displacements, both from the umbo and the central part of the stapes footplate, often associated with a pronounced hearing loss. It could be concluded that the reduced displacement of the stapes footplate may be related to a greater hearing loss.

Nowadays in the construction of modem buildings, it is necessary to accommodate pipes and ducts necessary services, such as air conditioning, water supply, sewerage, electricity, computer networks, and telephone networks. Cellular members – steel I‐ shaped structural elements with circular web openings at regular intervals – have been used as beams for more than 35 years now. Although in the past already a large deal of research was performed into the subject of the behavior of cellular beams, almost no attention has been paid to the application of cellular members as columns. The column will be analyzed using the finite element method to calculate the critical load and compared with the Eurocode3 standard, web-post buckling, and frame using cellular member by FEM.
