Abstract Based on the international literature, the effect of an existing panoramic view on the market value of properties is positive and significant. This value-adding factor varies by location and by type of view. In Central Europe, no such evaluation study has been elaborated until now. New building construction may restrict the existing panorama, and this is the other side of the same phenomenon. View restriction may result in stigmatization, which is a negative effect on the property. There are two major methodologies to observe the effect: revealed preference method (RPM) and stated preference method (SPM). One SPM approach is contingent valuation (CV), wherein well-informed stakeholders give their opinion about the impact caused by the investigated effect. The CV methodology, using the Delphi approach, was employed to observe the market value decrease in the cases of several restricted panorama situations in Budapest. Based on the research, this effect in Budapest is in line with the published western results. The result of the study can be used to support real estate developers and architects in their development decisions. This is an extended version of the article titled “The impact of view-restriction: a Delphi case study from Budapest”, presented at Creative Construction Conference 2018, CCC 2017, 30 June to 3 July 2018, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Previous research has shown that cutbacks in public spending often impact the range and quality of the public services delivered, leading to negative behaviors on the part of public servants. This article examines how sudden cutbacks caused by a major state financial crisis have an impact on interpersonal trust within a special police unit. We present the results of a longitudinal case study using a combination of qualitative methods. The lack of foreseeability and reliability caused by drastic changes resulting from cutbacks has a negative effect on members’ trust in their capacity to perform.

In this program evaluation study, we analyzed the impact of interpersonal validation and participation in living-learning communities (LLC) on retention and GPA via regression and propensity score matching. The LLCs were designed to improve outcomes for underrepresented, low-income and first-generation students at a Midwestern regional public university. Employing data from the widely used Mid-Year Student Assessment™, we created a validation score. This student validation score was significantly associated with retention in semester three, and third semester and sixth semester GPA. In the matched pair analyses, we found mixed results with significantly improved retention for participants in just one LLC compared to their matched peers, and significantly improved GPA for a combined group of LLC participants.

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of crime proxied by different indicators on regional tourist inflows to South Africa. The estimations are carried out using the Johansen estimation techniques. Monthly data gathered from March 2003 to April 2011 is employed and the results from the estimations found that total crime has a negative effect on tourists from Africa, North America, Central and Southern America, West and Southern Europe. However, the level of crime in the country appears to have no influence at all to tourist from the Middle East whilst those from Asia are more sensitive to the level of sexual crime. At the different categories of crime investigated, tourists react differently. In line with the findings of the existing literature, the real exchange rate and world income remain to have a significant effect on tourist inflows from most of the regions.

The ultimate goal of all activities within organizations is to achieve higher growth and finding new sources for mounting firm capital. This study aims to investigate debt capacity as the source of firm capital and its impact on firm’s growth. The objectives of this research to shows the relationship between market to book ratio and debt to asset ratio. Multiple liner regression is used between Growth and book leverage. By selected pharmaceutical sector that has been listed at Karachi stock exchange in Pakistan. In this research 8 companies are selected that are listed at Karachi Stock Exchange during the period of 2005-2014. In this paper secondary data is used. The result reveals a significant positive relationship between the debt to asset ratio and market to book ratio and debt to asset ratio. It displays that there is no negative effect of debt capacity on firm’s growth.

This study quantifies the impact of individual attributes, the built environment, and travel characteristics on the use of bike-sharing and the willingness of shifting to bike-sharing-related travel modes (bike-sharing combined with other public transportation modes such as bus and subway) under different scenarios. The data are from an RP (Revealed Preference) survey and SP (Stated Preference) survey in Nanjing, China. Three mixed logit models are established: an individual attribute–travel characteristics model, a various-factor bike-sharing usage frequency model, and a mixed scenario–transfer willingness model. It is found that age and income are negatively associated with bike-sharing usage; the transfer distance (about 1 km), owning no car, students, and enterprises are positively associated with bike-sharing usage; both weather and travel distance have a significant negative impact on mode shifting. The sesearch conclusions can provide a reference for the formulation of urban transportation policies, the daily operation scheduling, and service optimization of bike-sharing.

A considerable part of Southern European countries building stock was constructed before the implementation of national thermal regulations, and as such, it is currently exposed to challenges such as energy poverty and climate change. Portuguese public social housing presents a significant variety of construction systems and applied typologies. Among them, the “Novobra NK1”, a precast concrete construction system that exploits some innovative features in envelope components, has been used in several projects. Considering the importance of retrofitting to improve and adapt the thermal behaviors of buildings to face the aforementioned challenges, this article aims to provide an understanding of the behavior of a NK1 thermal envelope of a dwelling located in Covilhã, Portugal, and the impact of some constructive envelope retrofit measures applied. Results show that existing opaque envelope elements and glazed areas present characteristics that are no longer able to provide proper responses to contemporary building constructive requirements. External insulation was identified as a key retrofit measure, window replacement also being an advised solution for rigorous heating seasons. Improvements from the internal side of windows, such as roller shades, may provide few benefits during cooling seasons, and applying solar films is not advised without a proper thermal repercussion analysis.

The unconstrained demand forecast for car rentals has become a difficult problem for revenue management due to the need to cope with a variety of rental vehicles, the strong subjective desires and requests of customers, and the high probability of upgrading and downgrading circumstances. The unconstrained demand forecast mainly includes repairing of constrained historical demand and forecasting of future demand. In this work, a new methodology is developed based on multiple discrete choice models to obtain customer choice preference probabilities and improve a known spill model, including a repair process of the unconstrained demand. In addition, the linear Holt–Winters model and the nonlinear backpropagation neural network are combined to predict future demand and avoid excessive errors caused by a single method. In a case study, we take advantage of a stated preference and a revealed preference survey and use the variable precision rough set to obtain factors and weights that affect customer choices. In this case study and based on a numerical example, three forecasting methods are compared to determine the car rental demand of the next time cycle. The comparison with real demand verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of the hybrid forecasting model with a resulting average error of only 3.06%.

Usage context-based design (UCBD) is an emerging design paradigm where usage context is considered as a critical part of driving factors behind customers’ choices. Here, usage context is defined as all aspects describing the context of product use that vary under different use conditions and affect product performance and/or consumer preferences for the product attributes. In this paper, we propose a choice modeling framework for UCBD to quantify the impact of usage context on customer choices. We start with defining a taxonomy for UCBD. By explicitly modeling usage context’s influence on both product performances and customer preferences, a step-by-step choice modeling procedure is proposed to support UCBD. Two case studies, a jigsaw example with stated preference data and a hybrid electric vehicle example with revealed preference data, demonstrate the needs and benefits of incorporating usage context in choice modeling.
