A useful character for spotting specimens of the pantropical Rubiaceae genus Eumachia is the leaves drying green. The physiological reasons for this are unresolved. We investigated whether the phenomenon is related to the accumulation of aluminium. Samples of foliage from herbarium specimens of nine species of Eumachia (Rubiaceae), including collections from Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Americas, were analysed for elemental concentrations. For comparison, specimens of the closely related genera Psychotria and Palicourea from similar geographical regions were also analysed. Two species, Palicourea violacea (Panama) and Psychotria pallens (Brazil) were found to be aluminium hyperaccumulators (≥ 1% Al by dry weight), with a third species, Eumachia collina (from New Caledonia), falling just short of the threshold with 0.99% Al. Aluminium accumulation (≥ 0.4% Al by dry weight) occurs but is infrequent among species of Eumachia and appears lesscommon than in the close relative Palicourea. Aluminium accumulation also appears patchy in Psychotria sensu stricto. It seems unlikely that herbarium greenness in Eumachia is directly related to aluminium accumulation.

Abstract New Caledonia is a global biodiversity hotspot known for its metal hyperaccumulator plants. X-ray fluorescence technology (XRF) has enabled non-destructive and quantitative determination of elemental concentrations in herbarium specimens from the ultramafic flora of the island. Specimens belonging to six major hyperaccumulator families (Cunoniaceae, Phyllanthaceae, Salicaceae, Sapotaceae, Oncothecaceae and Violaceae) and one to four specimens per species of the remaining ultramafic taxa in the herbarium were measured. XRF scanning included a total of c. 11 200 specimens from 35 orders, 96 families, 281 genera and 1484 species (1620 taxa) and covered 88.5% of the ultramafic flora. The study revealed the existence of 99 nickel hyperaccumulator taxa (65 known previously), 74 manganese hyperaccumulator taxa (11 known previously), eight cobalt hyperaccumulator taxa (two known previously) and four zinc hyperaccumulator taxa (none known previously). These results offer new insights into the phylogenetic diversity of hyperaccumulators in New Caledonia. The greatest diversity of nickel hyperaccumulators occur in a few major clades (Malphigiales and Oxalidales) and families (Phyllanthaceae, Salicaceae, Cunoniaceae). In contrast, manganese hyperaccumulation is phylogenetically scattered in the New Caledonian flora.

SUMMARYThe zoonotic cestodeEchinococcus ortleppi(Lopez-Neyra and Soler Planas, 1943) is mainly transmitted between dogs and cattle. It occurs worldwide but is only found sporadically in most regions, with the notable exception of parts of southern Africa and South America. Its epidemiology is little understood and the extent of intraspecific variability is unknown. We have analysed in the present study the genetic diversity among 178E. ortleppiisolates from sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and South America using the complete mitochondrialcox1(1608 bp) andnad1(894 bp) DNA sequences. Genetic polymorphism within the loci revealed 15cox1and sixnad1haplotypes, respectively, and 20 haplotypes of the concatenated genes. Presence of most haplotypes was correlated to geographical regions, and only one haplotype had a wider spread in both eastern and southern Africa. Intraspecific microvariance was low in comparison withEchinococcus granulosussensu stricto, despite the wide geographic range of examined isolates. In addition, the various sub-populations showed only subtle deviation from neutrality and were mostly genetically differentiated. This is the first insight into the population genetics of the enigmatic cattle adaptedEchinococcus ortleppi. It, therefore, provides baseline data for biogeographical comparison amongE. ortleppiendemic regions and for tracing its translocation paths.

Araucaria goroensis R.R.Mill & Ruhsam sp. nov., a new monkey puzzle species from New Caledonia, is described and illustrated with photographs from the field and from herbarium specimens. Previously confused with Araucaria muelleri, it is more similar to A. rulei. It is distinguished from the latter species by its larger leaves, microsporophylls without a shouldered base, and shorter female cone bracts. It occurs in a very limited area of south-east New Caledonia, where its existence is threatened by nickel mining. Using the guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, we propose an assessment of Endangered for the new species and reassess Araucaria muelleri also as Endangered. A key to the seven species in the ‘large-leaved clade’ of New Caledonian species of Araucaria is given. The name Eutassa latifolia de Laub. is synonymised with Araucaria muelleri, and the recent typification of the latter name by Vieillard 1276 is rejected. Detailed reasoning is given for these nomenclatural acts.

Electron probe x-ray micro-analysis was used to study the elemental concentration changes that occur during pilocarpine-stimulated saliva secretion. Quantitative x-ray micro-analysis of elemental concentrations in intracellular compartments of rat parotid glands stimulated in vivo with pilocarpine showed that Na concentration was significantly increased, while K concentration was significantly reduced. The magnitude of these changes was consistent with values obtained in other tissues with the x-ray micro-analysis method, and in the same tissue with other experimental methods. Comparisons with results from studies utilizing dispersed acini suggest that acinar dispersion procedures may affect intracellular elemental concentrations. Total electrolyte concentrations in cytoplasm and secretory granules were estimated to increase on a dry-weight basis following pilocarpine stimulation. The former change is consistent with the notion of a trans-cellular route of salivary fluid flow, while the latter change may be important in the exocytosis of secretory granules.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)—the prototypical human tumor virus—is responsible for 1–2% of the global cancer burden, but divergent strains seem to exist in different geographical regions with distinct predilections for causing lymphoid or epithelial malignancies. Here we report the establishment and characterization of Yu103, an Asia Pacific EBV strain with a highly remarkable provenance of being derived from nasopharyngeal carcinoma biopsy but subsequently propagated in human B-lymphoma cells and xenograft models. Unlike previously characterized EBV strains which are either predominantly B-lymphotropic or epitheliotropic, Yu103 evinces an uncanny capacity to infect and transform both B-lymphocytes and nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. Genomic and phylogenetic analyses indicated that Yu103 EBV lies midway along the spectrum of EBV strains known to drive lymphomagenesis or carcinogenesis, and harbors molecular features which likely account for its unusual properties. To our knowledge, Yu103 EBV is currently the only EBV isolate shown to drive human nasopharyngeal carcinoma and B-lymphoma, and should therefore provide a powerful novel platform for research on EBV-driven hematological and epithelial malignancies.

The pre-1941 Japanese population of New Caledonia was decimated by the French administration’s decision to transfer most of the Japanese residents to Australia for internment at the outbreak of the Asia-Pacific theatre of the Second World War. Among the men transferred to Australia were ten men who had been formerly French nationals but had lost their French nationality by decree. The French Administration’s ability to denationalise and intern and then subsequently repatriate the former-Japanese French-nationals was possible due to changes to the French nationality laws and regulations introduced by the Vichy regime. This paper considers the case of the Japanese who had taken French nationality and were denationalised in the context of the changes to the French nationality laws that, in turn, negatively affected the post-1945 sustainability of the Japanese community in New Caledonia.

AbstractThe larvae of Anischia Fleutiaux and Perothops Laporte are described. Cladistic analyses based on adult and larval morphology, as well as CO1 sequence data, place both genera in the Eucnemidae clade within the Elateroidea (sensu stricto). The subfamily Anischiinae Fleutiaux, 1936 is placed in the family Eucnemidae in a clade containing the more derived eucnemid subfamilies (Melasinae, Eucneminae and Macraulacinae), while Perothops and Phyllocerus Lepeletier & Serville represent subfamilies basal to the remaining eucnemid taxa. The genus Afranischia Basilewsky, 1955 is synonymized with Anischia Fleutiaux, 1896, and Anischia boliviana Fleutiaux is selected as the type species of the latter. Three new species are described: Anischia bicolor (New Caledonia), Anischia kuscheli (New Caledonia) and Anischia monteithi (NE Australia), and Anischia stupenda Fleutiaux, 1897 is recorded from Australia. Anischia crassicornis Champion, 1897 is synonymized with Anischia mexicana Fleutiaux, 1896. One new combination is made, Anischia ruandana (Basilewsky, 1955).

Abstract Abstract 4272 Background: Globally, a number of management guidelines provide recommendations for transfusion and iron chelation therapy across various transfusion-dependent anemias. Most treatment guidelines aim to control body iron burden by maintaining serum ferritin <2500 ng/mL; however, ‘real-world’ practices may not reflect these guidelines and direct comparison of treatment practices between geographical regions are limited. Transfusion history and iron chelation practices prior to study enrolment in the EPIC study (Cappellini MD et al. Haematologica 2010;95:557–66) were evaluated to explore differences across geographical regions. Methods: Patients aged ≥2 years with serum ferritin levels ≥1000 ng/mL, or <1000 ng/mL but with a history of multiple transfusions (>20 transfusions or 100 mL/kg of red blood cells), and liver iron concentration ≥2 mg Fe/g dry weight were enrolled in the study. Baseline data were reported according to underlying anemias: thalassemia major (TM), thalassemia intermedia (TI), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), sickle cell disease (SCD) and aplastic anemia (AA), and by geographical regions: Europe, Middle East/Africa and Asia-Pacific. Results: Of 1744 patients enrolled in the EPIC study, 1558 are included in this analysis (680 from Europe; 275 from Middle East/Africa; 603 from Asia-Pacific; 937 TM, 84 TI, 341 MDS, 116 AA and 80 SCD). Across all regions, patients with TM spent a larger proportion of their lifetime (88–92%) on transfusion therapy compared with other anemias; this was consistent across geographical regions. For patients with TM, mean number of transfusion episodes in the year prior to study entry was lower in the Asia-Pacific region (14.9; n=416; mean patient age 16.2 years) than in Europe (22.7; n=279; mean patient age 24.9 years). In patients with AA, their proportion of lifetime receiving transfusions was also lower in the Asia-Pacific region (20.3%; n=82; mean patient age 33.2 years) than in Europe (42.7%; n=29; mean patient age 36.1 years). The proportion of patients receiving previous iron chelation therapy (deferiprone and/or deferoxamine [DFO]) varied considerably across geographical regions. In all patients, 22% were chelation-naïve; the highest proportion of chelation-naïve patients was in the Asia-Pacific region. In TM patients, the percentage of chelation-naïve patients varied considerably across regions being only 0.4% of patients in Europe compared with 5.4% in the Middle East/Africa and 12.5% in the Asia-Pacific region. For AA patients, 48.3% were chelation-naïve in Europe compared with 76.8% in the Asia-Pacific region. In TM patients, the proportion of their lifetime receiving chelation therapy was lower (48.9%) in the Asia-Pacific region than in Europe (63.6%). In patients with AA, the proportion of lifetime receiving chelation therapy was also lower in the Asia-Pacific region (6.3%; n=19) compared with Europe (26.3%; n=15). Median baseline serum ferritin level was >2500 ng/mL across all anemias. Serum ferritin levels were ≥2500 ng/mL in 61.3% of patients across regions (50.6% [Europe], 59.3% [Middle East/Africa] and 74.3% [Asia-Pacific]). For patients with TM, TI, AA and SCD, serum ferritin levels were substantially higher in the Asia-Pacific region compared with other regions (Figure). In the Asia-Pacific region, the proportion of patients with serum ferritin levels ≥4000 ng/mL varied between 31.1% and 53.6% across anemias, compared with 14.3–37.5% in Europe. Conclusions: There are many differences in transfusion and iron chelation practices across regions, with most prominent differences in the Asia-Pacific region. Factors contributing to these differences might include regional variations in specific disease characteristics (severity, transfusion requirement), treatment practices (eg, hemoglobin level at which transfusion is initiated), the availability and accessibility of transfusion and iron chelation therapy including patients' compliance and physician attitude and adherence to treatment guidelines. The high proportion of patients with baseline serum ferritin >2500 ng/mL suggests that previous iron chelation regimens with DFO and/or deferiprone prior to the EPIC study were suboptimal with limitations for adequate control of iron burden across geographical regions. A greater improvement in iron chelation practices is warranted across the globe with an immediate focus on the Asia-Pacific region.
