The ferrofluid flow model of the Shliomis and continuity equation for the film and porous interface with the theory of Darcy, the modified Reynolds equation for ferrofluid squeeze film between curved annular plates is discussed with the impact of the rotation of Ferro-particles and slip velocity at the boundary. Beavers and Joseph’s slip conditions are adopted to study the impact of slip velocity. The generalized non-dimensional pressure equation is derived and expression for dimensionless load-carrying capacity is obtained for the same. The graphical representation suggests that the bearing's performance enhances due to ferrofluid, considering the appropriate values of parameters for slip velocity and porosity.

Based on the Shliomis ferrofluid flow model (SFFM) and continuity equation for the film as well as porous region, modified Reynolds equation for lubrication of circular squeeze film bearings is derived by considering the effects of oblique radially variable magnetic field (VMF), slip velocity at the film–porous interface and rotations of both the discs. The squeeze film bearings are made up of circular porous upper disc of different shapes (exponential, secant, mirror image of secant and parallel) and circular impermeable flat lower disc. The validity of Darcy's Law is assumed in the porous region. The SFFM is important because it includes the effects of rotations of the carrier liquid as well as magnetic particles. The VMF is used because of its advantage of generating maximum field at the required active contact area of the bearing design system. Also, the effect of porosity is included because of its advantageous property of self-lubrication. Using Reynolds equation, general form of pressure equation is derived and expression for dimensionless load-carrying capacity is obtained. Using this expression, results for different bearing design systems (due to different shapes of the upper disc) are computed and compared for variation of different parameters.

This paper attempts to study a ferrofluid lubrication based rough sine film slider bearing with assorted porous structure using a numerical approach. The fluid flow of the system is regulated by the Neuringer-Rosensweig model. The impact of the transverse surface roughness of the system has been derived using the Christensen and Tonder model. The corresponding Reynolds’ equation has been used to calculate the pressure distribution which, in turn, has been the key to formulate the load carrying capacity equation. A graphical representation is made to demonstrate the calculated value of the load carrying capacity which is a dimensionless unit. The numbers thus derived have been used to prove that ferrofluid lubrication aids the load carrying capacity. The study suggests that the positive impact created by magnetization in the case of negatively skewed roughness helps to partially nullify the negative impact of the transverse roughness. Further investigation implies that when the Kozeny-Carman’s model is used, the overall performance is enhanced. The Kozeny-Carman’s model is a form of an empirical equation used to calculate permeability that is dependent on various parameters like pore shape, turtuosity, specific surface area and porosity. The success of the model can be accredited to its simplicity and efficiency to describe measured permeability values. The obtained equation was used to predict the permeability of fibre mat systems and of vesicular rocks.

Based on ferrohydrodynamic theory by R. E. Rosensweig and continuity equation for film as well as upper and lower porous regions, a general modified Reynolds equation for ferrofluid (FF) lubricated circular discs porous squeeze film-bearings is derived by assuming the validity of the Darcy’s law in the porous regions. The effects of porosity, slip velocity, anisotropic permeability and rotation at both the discs are also included for the study. Here, the FF is controlled by oblique and radially variable magnetic field. The effect of porosity is included because of its advantageous property of self-lubrication, and oblique variable magnetic field is important because of its advantage of generating maximum field at the required active contact zone of the bearing design systems. Using Reynolds equation, different circular porous squeeze film-bearing design systems (e.g. exponential, secant and parallel (flat)) are studied and compared for load-carrying capacity. During the course of investigation, it is observed that uniform magnetic field does not affect on the performances of the bearing systems.

In this paper, the squeeze-film lubrication theory between two isotropic porous rectangular plates has been advanced to analyse the effects of couple stresses arising due to the presence of microstructure additives in the lubricant, using the Stokes theory of couple-stress fluids. The most general form of the modified Reynolds equation is derived for the squeeze-film lubrication of the porous rectangular plates by taking into account of the velocity slip at the porous interface. An eigentype of expression is obtained for the squeeze-film pressure. The effects of the isotropic permeability, the couple stresses and the velocity slip parameters on the characteristics of the squeeze-film lubrication are discussed. A significant increase in the load-carrying capacity and the delayed squeeze-film time are observed for the couple-stress fluids in comparison with Newtonian fluids.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study and analyse the behaviour of a magnetic fluid-based squeeze film between rotating transversely rough porous annular plates, taking the elastic deformation into consideration. Design/methodology/approach – The stochastic film thickness characterizing the roughness is considered to be asymmetric with non-zero mean and variance and skewness while a magnetic fluid is taken as the lubricant. The associated stochastically averaged Reynolds-type equation is solved with appropriate boundary conditions to obtain the pressure distribution, which in turn is used to derive the expression for the load-carrying capacity. Findings – It is observed that the roughness of the bearing surfaces affects the performance adversely, although the bearing registers an improved performance owing to the magnetic fluid lubricant. Also, it is seen that the deformation causes reduced load-carrying capacity. The bearing can support a load even in the absence of flow, unlike the case of conventional lubricants. Originality/value – The originality of the paper lies in the fact that the negative effect of porosity, deformation and standard deviation can be minimized to some extent by the positive effect of the magnetic fluid lubricant in the case of negatively skewed roughness by suitably choosing the rotational inertia and aspect ratio. This effect becomes sharper when negative variance occurs.

This investigation analyzes the performance of a magnetic fluid based squeeze film for a sphere in a rough spherical seat with slip velocity. The slip model of Beavers and Joseph has been deployed to study the effect of velocity slip while the stochastic model of Christensen and Tonder has been used to calculate the effect of surface roughness. The concerned statistically averaged Reynolds’ type equation is solved to derive the pressure distribution which results in the calculation of load carrying capacity. The results presented in graphical forms confirm that the adverse effect of slip velocity can be overcome to a large extent at least in the case of negatively skewed roughness. However, lower values of slip may be preferred for enhancing the performance characteristics of the bearing system. Besides, variance (−ve) provides a little support to improve the performance characteristics.

In this study, the effect of viscosity variation of non-Newtonian lubrication on squeeze film characteristics with porous and Rabinowitsch fluid for conical bearings is analyzed. The modified Reynolds equation representing the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid with viscosity variation on the porous wall followed by the cubic stress law condition is invoked. For lubricant flow in a bearing clearance and in a porous layer Morgan–Cameron approximation is considered. A small perturbation technique is used to compute the pressure generation using modified Reynolds equation of lubrication. Approximate analytical solutions have been obtained for the squeeze film pressure, load-carrying capacity, squeeze film time, and center of pressure. The outcomes are displayed in diagrams and tables, which show that the effect of viscosity variation and porous wall on the squeeze film lubrication of conical bearings decreases film pressure, load-carrying capacity, and response time for the Newtonian case in comparison to the non-Newtonian case.

The use of additives (polyisobutylene, ethylene-propylene, lithium hydroxy stearate, hydrophobic silica, etc.) changes lubricants’ rheology due to which they show pseudoplastic and dilatant nature, which can be modelled as cubic stress fluid model (Rabinowitsch fluid model). The present theoretical analysis investigates the effects of non-Newtonian pseudoplastic and dilatant lubricants on the squeezing characteristics of a sphere and a flat plate. The modified Reynolds equation has been derived and an asymptotic solution for film pressure is obtained. The results for the film pressure distribution, load carrying capacity, and squeezing time characteristics have been calculated for various values of pseudoplastic parameter and compared with the Newtonian results. These characteristics show a significant variation with the non-Newtonian pseudoplastic and dilatant behavior of the fluids.

The paper presents, the multigrid method for the solution of combined effect of surface roughness and viscosity variation on the squeeze film lubrication of a short journal bearing operating with micropolar fluid. The modified Reynolds equation which incorporates the variation of viscosity in micropolar fluid is analysed using Multigrid method. The governing modified Reynolds equation is solved numerically for the fluid film pressure and bearing characteristics viz. load carrying capacity and squeeze time. The analysis of the results predicts that, the viscosity variation factor decreases the load carrying capacity and squeeze film time, resulting into a longer bearing life. The results are compared with the corresponding analytical solutions.

Combined effects of surface roughness and viscosity-pressure dependency on the couple stress squeeze film characteristics of parallel circular plates are presented. On the basis of Christensen’s stochastic theory, two types of one-dimensional roughness structures, namely, the radial roughness and azimuthal roughness patterns, are considered and the stochastic modified Reynolds equation for these two types of roughness patterns is derived for Stokes couple stress fluid by taking into account variation of viscosity with pressure. The standard perturbation technique is employed to solve the averaged Reynolds equation and closed form expressions for the mean fluid film pressure, load carrying capacity, and squeeze film time are obtained. It is found that the effects of couple stresses and viscosity-pressure dependency are to increase the load carrying capacity, and squeeze film time for both types of roughness patterns. The effect of azimuthal (radial) roughness pattern is to increase (decrease) these squeeze film characteristics as compared to the corresponding smooth case.
