This article discusses the significance and main functions of the distribution center as a providing link of retail trade in the conditions of actively developing retail networks. The distribution centers provide for the concentration of various products with different storage temperatures, which leads to the need to perform additional calculations of storage areas and redevelopment. Timely calculations that take into account the receipt and shipment of goods to the distribution center, allow you to create an effective inventory management system that will flexibly respond to requests throughout the distribution network.

The purpose of the research is to study the benefits and potential problems of using Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) in the warehouse management and inventory supplychain management. Methodology. In the process of writing this article a few various types of the observation, timing, motional, inventory, and historical methods (describing present time limitations of the current inventory tracking system compare to the benefits and obstacles of the proposed new generation inventory management system) were used. To support our conclusion, we used data from the sampling research conducting on the premises of six distribution centers. Generalized results of this study helped us to create a comparison between deployment of the system with the use of just RFID tags, just barcodes, and a hybrid technology, were both types of the inventory markings were incorporated. Results. As it was predicted even before the research begins, the result of the study proved that use of the RFID technology significantly improved reliability of the inventory system by reducing number of out-ofstock (OOS) items, improved speed of the data collection and reduce amount and time of the manual work. It was also determined that RFID technology will help companies to better manage day-to-day inventory operations. The overall results suggested that use of the RFID technology will help companies to reduce fixed and variable costs associated with the daily operation of the inventory management system. However, it was also found that RFID system is not prone to the problems related to the breakage of the equipment and tags themselves. It is also worth to take into account a cost of RFID tags compares to the barcodes or two-dimensional barcodes. If a medium size company will decide to switch to the RFID technology completely, the cost of the switch might not overweight the saving the company will have. In this case a possible solution might be two-dimensional barcodes. Practical meaning. We hope that results of the study, our observations, and comments will help businesses to evaluate deployment of the RFID technology better, understand some unrecognized pro and cons of it and find possible ways to improve on the current systems by using advantages of multiple inventory solutions. Prospects for further research. Consideration should be given to a possible research of the security of the RFID technology, safety of the protocols it uses to collect and transmit data, and, finally, a possibility of the external intrusion and malicious data manipulations and the ways to prevent it.

Today, creation of an efficient inventory management system for trade enterprises, which allows to cut down cumulative logistics costs, is a key task, The experience of large Russian federal retail networks reflects this tendency. It presupposes working through ones own distribution center with the purpose of uninterrupted supply of ones own shops with the required range of goods and optimization of purchase costs before selling these goods in outlets. Today effective work of a distribution center is impossible without modern information systems and application of cloud computing which allows managing not only stocks, but also orders and the range of goods in the operational mode. The article provides examples of goods order calculation both in manual and automatic mode (an example of an algorithm and formulae). Potential influence of AutoOrder on the increase of losses in retail trade is shown.

The concept of minimum display quantity (MDQ) is unavoidable in brick-and-mortar retailing format owing to which, retailers need to ensure a minimum level of inventory displayed at each store irrespective of the revenue or inventory turns generated by a particular store. It is observed that majority of bricks-and-mortar retailers in India assume;(a) existing inventory management system is ideal to their store, (b) software solutions record accurate inventory movement, (c) involving store management team in inventory related decision making is risky/biased and most importantly (d) loss of sale due to stockouts is inevitable. Such assumptions and widely followed practice have created a predisposition and mindset in store managers and they believe that their store delivers revenue and profit to the best of its potential with the inventory which is made available to them through existing inventory management system and we cannot avoid a number of instances consumers are unsatisfied due to stockout situations. In this research, we have analysed the existing decision-making process and control systems related to inventory management of a select retailer, attempted to design a new framework and applied the same through an experiment to evaluate the change in (a) overall store profitability and (b) inventory related key performance indicators.
