Adding vertical ribs is recognized as a useful practice for reducing wind effects on cooling towers. However, ribs are rarely used on cooling towers in China since Chinese Codes are insufficient to support the design of rough-walled cooling towers, and an “understanding” hampers the use of ribs, which thinks that increased surface roughness has limited effects on the maximum internal forces that control the structural design. To this end, wind tunnel model tests in both uniform flow field with negligible free-stream turbulence and atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) turbulent flow field are carried out in this article to meticulously study and quantify the surface roughness effects on both static and dynamic wind loads for the purpose of improving Chinese Codes first. Subsequently, a further step is taken to obtain wind effects on a full-scale large cooling tower at a high Re, which are employed to validate the results obtained in the wind tunnel. Finally, the veracity of the model test results is discussed by investigating the Reynolds number (Re) effects on them. It has been proved that the model test results for atmospheric boundary layer flow field are all obtained in the range of Re-independence and the conclusions drawn from model tests and full-scale measurements basically agree, so most model test results presented in this article can be directly applied to the full-scale condition without corrections.

"Naniwa-maru" is a reconstruction of a sailing trader that used to ply between Osaka and Edo, today's Tokyo, in the 18th to the mid-19th century. The rig was simple; single mast with a huge square sail. It was of totally wooden construction in a genuine Japanese manner. The present paper relates to her sailing sea-trial results compared with performance prediction based upon tank tests and wind tunnel studies. According to the trial the ship could reach as high as 70° to weather on her track and the speed then was some 30% of the true wind velocity in a fair sailing breeze. She was swiftest on a broad reach, achieving more than 40% of the wind speed. The said prediction proved to explain the test results fairly well.

Full-scale/model test comparison studies to validate the traditional ABL wind tunnel simulation technique are reviewed. According to the literature review, notable discrepancies between full-scale measurement results and model test results were observed by most performed comparison studies, but the causes of the observed discrepancies were not revealed in a scientific way by those studies. In this regard, a new research scheme for future full-scale/model test comparison studies is proposed in this article, which utilizes the multiple-fan actively controlled wind tunnel simulation technique. With the new research scheme, future full-scale/model test comparison studies are expected to reasonably disclose the main problems with the traditional ABL wind tunnel simulation technique, and the technique can be improved correspondingly.

The results of unique experimental studies of the strength and service life of a metal-composite high-pressure tank are presented. The goal of the study is to analyze the fracture mechanisms and evaluate the strength characteristics of the structure. The methodology included tests of full-scale samples of the tank for durability under short-term static, long-term static and cyclic loading with internal pneumatic pressure. Generalized test results and data of visual measurements, instrumental and acoustic-emission control of deformation processes, accumulation of damages and destruction of full-scale tank samples are presented. Analysis of the strength and stiffness of the structure exposed to internal pneumatic pressure is presented. The types of limiting states of the tanks have been established experimentally. Change in the stress-strain state of the tank under cyclic and prolonged static loading is considered. Specific features of the mechanisms of destruction of a metal-composite tank are determined taking into account the role of strain of the metal liner. The calculated and experimental estimates of the energy potential of destruction and the size of the area affected upon destruction of the tank are presented. Analysis of test results showed that the tank has high strength and resource characteristics that meet the requirements of the design documentation. The results of the experiments are in good agreement with the results of numerical calculations and analysis of the stress-strain state and mechanisms of destruction of the metal-composite tank.

Data post-processing plays important roles in a wind tunnel test, especially in supporting the validation of the test results and further data analysis related to the design activities of the test objects. One effective solution to carry out the data post-processing in an automated productive manner, and thus eliminate the cumbersome conventional manual way, is building a software which is able to execute calculations and have abilities in presenting and analyzing the data in accordance with the post-processing requirement. Through several prototype development cycles, this work attempts to engineer and realize such software to enhance the overall wind tunnel test activities.
