Background and Purpose The primary purpose of this study was to report differences in calf intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT), muscle strength (peak torque), power, and physical function in individuals with obesity, diabetes mellitus (DM), and peripheral neuropathy (PN) compared with those without these impairments. A secondary purpose was to assess the relationship between IMAT and muscle strength, power, and physical function. Subjects and Methods Six participants with obesity, DM, and PN (2 women, 4 men; mean age=58 years, SD=10; mean body mass index=36.3, SD=5; mean modified Physical Performance Test [PPT] score=22, SD=3) and 6 age- and sex-matched control subjects without these impairments were assessed and compared in muscle strength, muscle power, physical functioning, and muscle and fat volume, including IMAT in the calf muscles. Muscle, adipose tissue, and IMAT volumes of each calf were quantified by noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging. Muscle strength and power of the plantar-flexor and dorsiflexor muscles were quantified using isokinetic dynamometry. The modified PPT was used to assess physical function. Results Leg muscle and fat volumes were similar between groups, although IMAT volumes were 2.2-fold higher in the subjects with obesity, DM, and PN (X̅=120 cm3, SD=47) than in the control subjects (X̅=54 cm3, SD=41). Muscle strength, muscle power, ratio of leg muscle power to leg muscle volume, and modified PPT scores were lower in subjects with obesity, DM, and PN compared with the control subjects. Discussion and Conclusion The data indicate that excess fat infiltration in leg skeletal muscles is associated with low calf muscle strength, low calf muscle power, and impaired physical function in individuals who are obese with DM and PN.

Purpose. People with obesity, diabetes, and peripheral neuropathy have high levels of intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) volume which has been inversely related to physical function. We determined if IMAT is muscle specific, if calf IMAT is different between a healthy obese group (HO), a group with diabetes mellitus (D), and a group with diabetes mellitus and peripheral neuropathy (DN), and if IMAT volume or the ratio of IMAT/muscle volume is related to physical function in these groups.Methods. 10 healthy obese people, 11 with type 2 diabetes, 24 with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy, had assessments of muscle morphology, physical function and muscle performance.Results. The gastrocnemius muscle had a higher ratio of IMAT/muscle volume than any other muscle or compartment. There were no differences between groups in calf muscle or IMAT volumes. Calf IMAT was inversely related to physical performance on the 6-minute walk test (r=−0.47) and physical performance test (r=−0.36). IMAT/muscle volume was inversely related to physical performance (PPT,r=−0.44; 6 MWr=−0.48; stair power,r=−0.30).Conclusions. IMAT accumulation varies in calf muscles, is highest in the gastrocnemius muscle, and is associated with poor physical performance.

Objective: The high incidence and prevalence of falls among older people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (ODM) have been documented. The risk factors of falls among ODM were identified as poor diabetic control, diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and balance impairment. This study aimed to investigate the contribution of DPN to history of falls. The differences of balance performance and lower limb muscle strength among ODM with and without DPN were also explored. Methods: This cross-sectional study interviewed 112 ODM for their falls occurrences within the previous 6 months. DPN was determined by the score of the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument. Balance performance tests included Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction and Balance (mCTSIB), Functional Reach Test (FRT) and Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). Leg muscle strength was also measured. The logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: The history of falls was reported 30.6% of ODM with DPN and 10.4% of ODM without DPN. Presenting of DPN influenced falls with odds ratio of 3.46 among ODM. Differences were found of mCTSIB in the condition of eyes closed on firm and foam surfaces, FRT, and TUG between those with and without DPN. Knee extensor strength differed between those with and without DPN. Conclusion: DPN was more prominent among fallers. Balance performance and leg strength were lower in ones with DPN. Falls prevention programs including balance training and therapeutic exercise to improve balance performance and muscle strength should be emphasized among ODM, especially before the onset of DPN.

Plyometric exercise is form of exercise which vary. In this research, the researcher only uses three kinds of exercise – jump to box, depth jump and single-leg depth jump. This research aims to analyze the influence of jump to box, depth jump and single-leg depth jump towards enhancement of limbs muscle strength and power. Subject of this research is 40 students of SMA Negeri 1 Ngunut who join extracuricular, all of them are boy. This is quantitative semi experimental research which use matching-only design to clasify the group and Anova to analyze the data. During pretest and posttest, leg dynamometer were used to take the data of limbs muscle strength, while Jump MD were used to take the data of of limbs muscle power. Furthermore, the data were analyze using SPSS version 21. The result of this research shooed that there is influence of jump to box, depth jump and single-leg depth jump towards enhancement of limbs muscle strength and power. It can be concluded that plyometric exercise using box jump is very efficient to enhance the leg muscle performance.

Badminton has several hit techniques; one of them is smash which requires several physical components as a support for the success of making a smash. This study was to determine the correlation between leg muscle power, arm muscle strength and hand eye coordination on badminton smashes. This study was a correlational study and the purpose was to find out the correlation between the independent variable of leg muscle power, arm muscle strength and hand eye coordination to the dependent variable smash accuracy. This study had 20 of PB Delta Purwokerto athletes as the subjects. The researcher used product moment correlation test to analyze the data. Based on the data analysis, the correlation coefficient value between the leg muscle power and the accuracy of the smash was 0.571, the correlation coefficient between arm muscle strength and smash accuracy was 0.735, meanwhile between the hand eye coordination and smash accuracy was 0.520. The result of f > table f (17,364 > 3,49) with a probability value of 0,000. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was a significant correlation among leg muscle power, arm muscle strength, and hand eye coordination with the accuracy of badminton smashes.
