This research is motivated by the lack of mathematics teaching materials that can make students learn on their own. The teaching material can be created by teachers as they are the ones who possess the knowledge about their students’ characteristics. Further, learning materials are a set of materials (information, tools, or texts) that can aid teachers and students to carry out the learning process. The two-variable linear equation system (SPLDV) is one of the mathematics materials taught to eighth-grade students of junior high school; it contains problems related to daily life. However, it is found that this material is still difficult to master by most students. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the SPLDV teaching materials that can help students learn and solve problems as well as be used as examples by teachers in developing other materials. This research aimed to make problem-based SPLDV teaching materials. The research method refers to the Four-D Model by Thiagarajan, Semmel, and Semmel (1974). It consisted of defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. The results showed that problem-based SPLDV teaching materials could be used in learning activities as the students and the teachers had shown their positive responses after going through expert assessments. This study also suggested that the teachers use this teaching material and adopt teaching materials for other similar materials.

The intention of this study was to find the learning trajectory of two-variable linear equations system in Junior High School. This study was design research using validation study. The participants of this study were Junior High School students in grade IX SMPIT Luqman al-Hakim Yogyakarta Indonesia. Data were collected through observation and interview. Data were analysed using Milles & Huberman model. Result revealed that the learning trajectory of the two-variables linear equation system were to deepen the mastery of algebra and one-variable linear equation system, model the two-variable linear equation system, solve the experiments, complete the two-variable linear equation using graphs, complete two-variable linear equations by substitution, simple elimination, complex elimination, and mixed method, and solve two-variable linear equation system problems. Keywords: learning trajectory, two-variable linear equation system, design research.

AbstractThis case study on three Chinese EFL learners in junior high school examined the interaction inside and outside learners’ EFL self-concept system, and the findings revealed: (1) inside the self-concept system, the interaction between the global and specific self-concepts is of much complexity; (2) the gap between the global and specific self-concepts would cause imbalance in the self-concept system, and thus trigger efforts to improve learning, while some reconciling elements in the global self-concept may sustain balance in the self-concept system, inhibiting learners’ motivation to improve; and (3) the degree of specificity of learners’ specific selfconcepts that inform learners’ learning efforts contributes considerably to the outcome of these efforts, as does that of learners’ beliefs about EFL learning which mediate the learning efforts.

The students' ability to solve world problems of linear equation system in term of reasoning skillsAbstractThis study aimed to describe the students’ ability to solve word problems of the two-variable linear equation system in terms of mathematical reasoning skills. This study was qualitative research with descriptive methods. The subjects consisted of three students selected using purposive sampling technique from twenty grade-eight students of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 (Junior High School) Surakarta, Indonesia. The subjects' selection was based on the level of mathematical reasoning skills, namely low, medium, and high. We were collecting data using a test, interviews, and documentation. The stages of data analysis include data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results showed that (1) student with low mathematical reasoning was not able to understand problems, determine problem-solving strategies, implement plans, and locking-back the solution; (2) student with moderate mathematical reasoning was able to understand problems and determine problem-solving strategies, but has not been able to carry out plans and locking-back the solution; (3) student with high mathematical reasoning was able to understand problems, determine problem-solving strategies, carry out plans, and locking-back the solution; (4) the causes of student errors, namely students did not write down all important information in the problems, doing mathematical modeling, write unsystematic solutions, and did not conclude solutions correctly.

Abstract:  The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of heuristic strategies on the mathematical problem solving approach of students in class VIII of Junior High School on the material of Two Variable Linear Equation Systems. This type of research is quasi-experimental. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of junior high school. The instrument used is a test which amounts to 6 questions. The results showed that the average results of the experimental class posttest were 65.8 and the control class average value was 58.68. The t-test results obtained t-count of 2.53 and t-Tabel of 2.02. This shows that the learning outcomes between the experimental class students and the control class have significant differences after being given different treatments. So that the heuristic strategy in the problem solving approach used is more influential on student learning outcomes compared to the direct learning method in the two-variable linear equation material
