The experiments were conducted on station and on farm in three districts of Wolayta and Hadiya Zones, south region, Ethiopia, to evaluate the adaptation and yield, assess farmer’s preferences of desi chick pea varieties  to this agro ecological Zones during 2004/05 Meher Season. Data on plant height, hundred seed weight, pod per plant, days to flowering, days to maturity and grain yield were recorded. Five released varieties namely worku, Akaki, Mariye, Dubie, Dz-10-11 and local checks of respective locations were planted on 4.8m2 plots at spacing of 30cm*10cm. The trials were laid in randomized complete block design with three replications. Twelve farmers from three districts at four villages’ three farmers at each village were participated in conducting on farm trials with each farmer as a replicate. There were significant differences among varieties for grain yield and some of traits.  The varieties Akaki and worku were superior yielded overall to the standard and local check across villages ’and on stations. Thus, Akaki and worku out yielded other varieties and had average yields of 1440.95 kg/ha and 1434.75kg/ha at on station and similar trends on farm. The combined statistical analysis and farmers assessments revealed Akaki and worku out yielding other varieties which were also selected by farmers and researchers as the most preferred varieties’. It is therefore recommended that worku and Akaki which had higher yields be promoted for cultivation in the selected districts of south Ethiopia.

A field experiment was conducted during rabi and kharif seasons of 2014-15 and 2015-16 to find out suitable linseed and sesame genotypes to fit in the Fallow-Fallow- T. aman rice cropping system under AEZ 20 in Sylhet region of Bangladesh. This experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with six dispersed replications. It was revealed that among the different linseed varieties, the genotype Zokiganj-local gave the maximum number (31.40) of capsules plant-1 and 1000-seed weight (4.01g) with the highest seed yield (1003 kg ha-1). Similarly, sesame var. BARI Til-4 provided maximum number of capsules plant-1 (71.33), seeds plant-1 (70.33) and highest 1000-seed weight (3.012g), which resulted the highest seed yield (1150 kg ha-1) yield in arable fallow land of Sylhet region. The lowest seed yield 782 and 840 kg ha-1 of linseed and sesame was produced by the genotypes Patuakhali local and the var. BARI Til-3, respectively.Bangladesh Agron. J. 2017, 20(1): 7-12

Ethiopia is one of the famous and major producers of sesame in sub-Saharan Africa, and Ethiopian sesame is among the highest quality in the world. The experiment was conducted in Northern Ethiopia for three growing seasons (2013–2015) under a rain fed condition with the objective of identifying high-yielding genotypes and their agronomic traits. The experiment consisted of twelve genotypes laid down in randomized complete block design with three replications. The genotype, year, and genotype × year interaction components showed statistically highly significant variation (p<0.001) for most of the agronomic traits which clearly confirms the presence of genotype × year interaction in this study. The highest combined mean grain yield (906.3 kg/ha) was obtained from Hirhir followed by Serkamo white (756.5 kg/ha), and from the three growing seasons, the highest grain yield (1161.5 kg/ha) was recorded from Hirhir grown in the second growing season (2014). The growing seasons were different from one another in allowing the genotypes to have a different performance, and all of the agronomic traits, except thousand seed weight, were statistically different across the three growing seasons. In the ordination of the genotypes and agronomic traits, PCA1, which accounted for 38.3% of the variation, was positively associated with grain yield, branches per plant, length of the pod-bearing zone, plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, and thousand seed weight. On the contrary, PCA2, which accounted for 19.7% of the variation, was positively associated with days to 50% flowering and days to 50% maturity.

Many varieties of bean are widely grown across diverse agro-ecological zones in Nepal. And opportunities exist for improving the crops and enhancing their resilience to various biotic and abiotic stressors. In this context, an experiment was conducted from June to October 2016 in Khar VDC of Darchula district to study the phenotypic traits of nine landraces of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The bean landraces were planted using randomized complete block design in three sites (Dhamidera, Dallekh and Sundamunda villages), with three replications in each site for their comparative analysis. The study considered the following phenotypic traits: days to emergence, days to 50% flowering, days to 90% pod maturity, number of nodes, pod length, pod width, number of pods, number of seeds per pod and weight and grain yield for 100 seeds. Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences in the landraces both within and among locations. KA-17-08-FB and KA-17-04-FB were late  flowering (63 and 65 days respectively) compared to other landraces whereas KA-17-07-FB flowered earliest (within 42 days). In all three sites, three landraces namely KA-17-07-FB, KA-17-04-FB and KA-17-06-FB were found to be relatively more resistant to pest and diseases than other landraces. Eight out of nine landraces in Dhamidera and Dallekh villages and seven out of nine in Sundamunda village produced seeds greater than 1.0 t/ha. Among the nine varieties KA-17-02-FB was the highest yielding variety, with an average yield of 3.8 t/ha. This study is useful for identifying suitable landraces for future promotion based on their maturity, grain yield, diseases resistance and other qualitative and quantitative characteristics.

Production and productivity of green gram is governed by environmental, genotypic trait of the crop and crop management. The more specific reason for low production and productivity of pulses is the cultivation of local old varieties under marginally fertile lands and low input management conditions. Recently, high yielding varieties of green gram have been developed and evaluation of these varieties under various management conditions will be of great importance. In this view the study was conducted to investigate the growth and yield response of different green gram varieties in Kitui and Makueni counties in Kenya. Three green gram varieties (KS20, KAT 00308 and KAT 00309) were laid out in a randomized complete block design and replicated three times. The varieties differed significantly (P≤0.05) in plant height, number of effective nodules, 100-grain mass and grain yield in both sites. Variety KS20 was the tallest in both sites in all the stages while KAT00309 was the shortest. Variety (KS20) had the highest number of effective nodules in Ithookwe (11) and Kiboko (39) with the lowest were recorded for variety KAT00308. Days to 50% flowering and maturity were different between the varieties, and KS20 had the shortest where it was recorded that the periods were shorter in Kiboko by >15 days compared to Ithookwe. In both sites, the highest grain yield was recorded for KAT00309 with 2898 kg/ha and 1568 kg/ha in Kiboko and Ithookwe, respectively. There were no signficant differences on the biological yield between the varieties but the 100-grain mass differed signficantly in both sites where variety KAT00309 was the heaviest with 7.8 g and 6.9 g in Kiboko and Ithookwe, respectively. It was concluded that variety KAT00309 could lead to the highest grain yield in both Kitui and Makueni counties under water stress conditions of the two counties.

Rajma (Phaseolus vulgaris L) known as the common bean, French bean, kidney bean, bush bean, and pole bean is the most important grain legume of Nepal which covers about 10,529 ha areas along with the productivity of 1477kgha-1. Generally it is grown during summer in mid/high hills and during winter (post rainy) season interai/inner terai in rice and maize based eco-system. Now Rajma bean is being popular as the cash crop in the province 3, 5 and 6 because of producing organic products and tastier quality. Multi-environment trials was carried out at Nepalgunj, Parwanipur, Itahari and Surkhet during the winter season of 2014-2017 comprised of 10 diverse Rajma genotypes in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications in order to evaluate the quantitative variation with respect to yield and yield contributing traits. The combined analysis of variance showed that the highly significant differences among the genotypes and locations in the traits like days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, hundred seed weight and grain yield. However; there was not any GxE interaction effect found in days to flowering, days to maturity and grain yield. Mean yield performances showed that the genotype PDR-14 (2341kgha-1) produced the highest yield followed by Utkarsh (2332kgha-1) and Arun-2 (2021kgha-1). In conclusion, PDR-14 gave 9-56% higher yield among the genotypes and its stability analysis test also indicated that PDR-14 was found a highly stable across the environments and over the years. Variegated red kidney shape seed, white flowers along with dwarf and glabrous leaf pubescence is the DUS trait of the PDR-14 and recommended for terai/inner terai to high hills.

A field experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during November 2013 to March 2014. Four soybean genotypes i.e BU Soybean1, BD2329, BD2331, AGS313 and a check variety BARI Soybean 6 were used to evaluate their variations in morphological characters and yield attributes. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The highest LAI (4.4) was found in genotype AGS313 and the smallest was found in BU Soyabean1. The highest pod size of 625 mg pod-1 was found in AGS313 while the lowest of 340 mg pod-1 was observed in BU Soybean1. Although BU Soyabean1 had smaller seed size but it had higher number of pods plant-1 (32.1) compared to other genotypes. The maximum 100-seed weight was recorded in AGS313 (16.34 g) and the minimum was obtained from the genotype BU Soybean1 (11.0 g). AGS313 genotype contributed to the highest grain yield of 4.29 tha-1, while BU Soyabean1 stood second position contributing 2.65 tha-1. Results also indicated that not only seed size but also number of pods plant-1 contributed to grain yield. Again there were highly significant differences among genotypes for all the characters.J. Superiority of hybrid maize cannot be overemphasized. Different types of hybrids are developed by plant breeders to improve productivity and multi-locational evaluation of these hybrids prior to release is necessary to select the best. The objectives of this study were to identify maize hybrids with superior agronomic potentials and compare the performance of top-cross and three-way cross hybrid maize varieties for grain yield and related traits under rain-fed condition in three different locations (Abeokuta, Ibadan and Akure) of Southwest Nigeria. The study consisted of ten hybrids each of top-cross and three-way cross hybrid varieties, tested with two checks. At each location, the experiment was laid out in randomised complete block design with three replications. The results showed that effects of locations, genotypes and genotype x location interactions were highly significant (p<0.01) for all the traits evaluated. Significant differences were also revealed between the top-cross and three-way cross hybrids for all the traits evaluated except days to 50% tasseling, ear diameter and 100-grain weight. The top-cross hybrids were superior over the three-way cross hybrids for grain yield by 5.25%. The hybrids ‘M0926-7’, ‘M0926-8’, ‘M1026-11’, ‘M1026-3’, ‘M1226-2’ (top-cross hybrids), ‘M1124-24’, ‘M1124-27’, ‘M1124-31’, ‘M1227-6’ and ‘M1227-7’ (three-way cross hybrids) showed highest stable yields across the three locations.  Hybrids ‘M0926-7’ (top-cross hybrid) and ‘M1124-24’ (three-way cross hybrid) that expressed early flowering with higher grain yield are recommended for drought stress prone areas because of their abilities to tolerate drought through escape.

There is need to improve soybean yield potentials per unit area in the tropics, at least to the world average productivity level. To achieve this, attention has to be paid to the selection of high yielding and stable genotypes through plant breeding improvement programmers. Twenty four soybean lines were investigated across three agro ecological zones in Nigeria to determine their productivity. In each of the sites, the experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Data were collected on growth and yield parameters.

Growth performance, yield components and total grain yield of a rice mutant lines were evaluated againest two popular rice varieties on farm experiments within five different upazila of Mymensingh region to find out the better cultivar on the besis of yield and duration. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The study was conducted for two consecutive season that ensure the stability of the mutant line. The results revealed that the cultivar RM(2)-40-©-4-2-8 was recorded highest effective tiller and maximum filled grain in most of the location. Among the all cultivar RM(2)-40-©-4-2-8 was recorded maximum grain yield in most of the location for two consecutive year which was statistically significant from other cultivar.

The experiment was conducted with six rice varieties to determine their growth and yield performance. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. All the growth and yield contributing attributes varied significantly among the six rice varieties. The results revealed that maximum No. of filled spikelets/panicle observed in Binadhan-16 (108.43) and that was statistically similar with Binadhan-17 (100.10). Minimum number of filled spikelets/panicle observed in Binadhan-11 (60.60) and that was statistically similar with Binadhan-15 (63.87). Maximum 1000-seed weight was observed in Binadhan-16 (25.67 g) that was statistically similar with Binadhan-20 (25.33 g). The minimum 1000-seed weight was observed in Binadhan-15 (22.33 g) that was statistically similar with Binadhan-17 (23.00 g). Maximum number of non effective tiller was observed in Binadhan-11 (11.53) and minimum number in Binadhan-17 (2.30) that was statistically similar with Binadhan-16 (2.94). Highest grain yield was obtained from Binadhan-16 (6.57 t ha-1) that was significantly different from other varieties. Lowest grain yield observed in Binadhan-15 (5.39 t ha-1) that was statistically similar to Binadhan-7 (5.54 t ha-1). The highest straw yield (6.80 t ha–1) is produced by Binadhan-16 (Fig. 2). The lowest (5.89 t ha–1) straw yield was produced by Binadhan-7.
