Abstract We examine a common origin of four-dimensional flavor, CP, and U(1)R symmetries in the context of heterotic string theory with standard embedding. We find that flavor and U(1)R symmetries are unified into the Sp(2h + 2, ℂ) modular symmetries of Calabi-Yau threefolds with h being the number of moduli fields. Together with the $$ {\mathbb{Z}}_2^{\mathrm{CP}} $$ ℤ 2 CP CP symmetry, they are enhanced to GSp(2h + 2, ℂ) ≃ Sp(2h + 2, ℂ) ⋊ $$ {\mathbb{Z}}_2^{\mathrm{CP}} $$ ℤ 2 CP generalized symplectic modular symmetry. We exemplify the S3, S4, T′, S9 non-Abelian flavor symmetries on explicit toroidal orbifolds with and without resolutions and ℤ2, S4 flavor symmetries on three-parameter examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds. Thus, non-trivial flavor symmetries appear in not only the exact orbifold limit but also a certain class of Calabi-Yau three-folds. These flavor symmetries are further enlarged to non-Abelian discrete groups by the CP symmetry.

O(10) grand unification models which do not necessarily have an extra global symmetry are discussed, taking the model with one 10-plet in the Yukawa sector as an example. A strong correlation between mass ratios and CP is found. The mass relation mt/mb=vu/vd is recovered when GW=0; and another special relation mt/mb=GE/GW appears when vd=0, where GE,W are Yukawa coupling constants and vu,d are vevs. To facilitate this discussion, a set of O(10) γ-matrices is offered based on a physical representation of the spinors and that of the vector of the SO(10) group. Flavor changing neutral currents in such models are also discussed.

Lepton mixing patterns from the modular group PSL2(7) with generalized CP symmetries are studied. The residual symmetries in both charged lepton and neutrino sectors are Z2×CP. Seven types of mixing patterns at the 3σ level of the new global fit data are obtained. Among these patterns, three types of patterns can give the Dirac CP phase which is in the 1σ range of the global fit data. The effective mass of neutrinoless double-beta decay for these patterns is also examined.

The present status of experimental results for the magnitudes of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements is reviewed and used for a unitarity test. The matrix is found to be unitary within ±1.8 standard deviations. The matrix violates CP-symmetry and the size of its CP-violation, as derived from only magnitude measurements and unitarity, is in perfect agreement with the observed CP-violations in K and B meson decays.
