Groupers are member of family Serranidae that plays important role in ecology of coral reefs ecosystem as top level predators.Economically, groupers are targets species for their high economic values.Based on statistics data for Karimunjawa fisheries during 2010 to 2014 it is shown a decline in capture of groupers. This implies to the demand of better management. This study dealt with the appraisal of the groupers fisheries in Karimunjawa based on indicators assessment of the Ecosystem Approach Fisheries Management (EAFM). EAFM approach uses comprehensively both ecological, socio-economics as well as institutional and governance capacity in managing fisheries. The results showed that the groupers fisheries has been managed moderately (n=70.59), of which priority management plan started from social development strategy to maintain existing strategy. Keywords: Serranidae; Grouper Fisheries; EAFM; Management Plan

The management of crab fishery in the Coastal and Small Islands Conservation Area of Kei Kecil Island and the surrounding Waters of Southeast Maluku Regency of Maluku Province has been conducted. One of them is through the development of management institution in Ohoi Evu, Hoat Sorbay Sub-district. The initiative of developing a community-based crab fisheries management model begins with the formation of the Sinar Abadi fishing group. The study aims to assess the dynamics, status and institutional development in the community to supporting the sustainable management of crab fisheries. The institutional dynamics are analyzed through the assessment of institutional domains in the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) and the flag model approach. Institutional status and development are analyzed by Institutional Development Framework (IDF) approach. This research found that the institutional dynamics of crab fishery management in Ohoi Evu belong to medium category. The institutional status is quite good, at the consolidation stage and the urgent institutional development needs. The implications are enhancement of institutional capacity in responsible fishery management of crabs, establishment and implementation of the Crab Fisheries Management Plan, and strengthening of institutional management resources and partnership.

Coral Reefs in Gulf of Mannar is degrading with fatser rate due to several environmental stress over the past few decades. Under this severe degredation phase, our work has observed significant coral recruitment at Hare Island and Manoli & Manoliputti Island of Gulf of Mannar. Occurrenc of new recruitment of corals increseas the live coral cover percentage upto 58.4% and 51.5% in both Islands respectively. The findings reported here that increased percentage of coral cover brings a new hope for the researcher to find out the possible driving forces to the successful post larval settlement and survival of the new recruits which results in better conservation and management plan for the coral reefs of GoM Marine National Park.

The United Nations calls on the international community to implement an ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) that considers the complex interrelationships between fisheries and marine and coastal ecosystems, including social and economic dimensions. However, countries experience significant national challenges for the application of the EAF. In this article, we used public officials’ knowledge to understand advances, gaps, and priorities for the implementation of the EAF in Chile. For this, we relied on the valuable information held by fisheries managers and government officials to support decision-making. In Chile, the EAF was established as a mandatory requirement for fisheries management in 2013. Key positive aspects include the promotion of fishers’ participation in inter-sectorial Management Committees to administrate fisheries and the regulation of bycatch and trawling on seamounts. Likewise, Scientific Committees formal roles in management allow the participation of scientists by setting catch limits for each fishery. However, important gaps were also identified. Officials highlighted serious difficulties to integrate social dimensions in fisheries management, and low effective coordination among the institutions to implement the EAF. We concluded that establishing clear protocols to systematize and generate formal instances to build upon government officials’ knowledge seems a clear and cost effective way to advance in the effective implementation of the EAF.

The Chapada Diamantina National Park (CDNP) was created in the midst of a densely populated area, and significant sections of the reserve are still undergoing processes of natural regeneration after intensive diamond mining activities were initiated in the mid-1800's. An up-to-date vegetation map was needed in order to indicate the types and distribution of regional vegetation assemblages in an easily interpretable manner and at an appropriate planning scale that could be easily consulted by decision makers and other interested groups at all levels of conservation (and development) planning. A vegetation map of the Chapada Diamantina National Park, and the areas immediately surrounding it, was prepared that: 1) delimits, describes, and maps the regional vegetation assemblages; 2) provides an indication of the degree of conservation of the mapped vegetation; 3) develops this information in a format that facilitates continued updating and revision as more information becomes available, enabling the monitoring of the evolution of the Park lands, and; 4) presents this information in a manner that can be easily interpreted and used for planning, management and conservation purposes. The resulting vegetation map revealed intensive anthropogenic disturbances in forested, savanna, and semi-arid areas subjected to intensive agricultural use outside of the Park boundaries. The National Park lands are generally well preserved but burning has replaced formerly extensive forest areas with open sedge meadows. In spite of intensive modification of the regional vegetation, two well preserved areas with high priority for conservation efforts beyond the National Park limits were identified and characterized. The vegetation mapping of the park itself can aid in the preparation of its management plan and in the reformulation of the existing boundaries of that reserve.
