Abstract: In contemporary learning, emphasis is placed on creative efforts to use language itself for more practical purposes. This view is often referred to as text-based language learning. As this paradigm changes, one of the competencies that high school students need to know in learning Indonesian is the ability to produce narrative text, as stated in the 2013 syllabus or curriculum (2017 revision). The ability to produce narrative text itself is inseparable from the ability to place conjunctions, both conjunctions between sentences and conjunctions between paragraphs. The accuracy of the conjunctions between sentences and between paragraphs will ensure the cohesion and coherence of the paragraph itself, which in turn will create a good narrative text. However, it is necessary to pay attention to whether the use of conjunctions in Indonesian language textbooks in narrative genre texts is complete and correct or not. Therefore, this paper aims to elaborate the forms of conjunctions between sentences used in the narrative genre text of Senior High School Indonesian language textbooks in 2013 Curriculum (2017 revision).

Since Indonesian students come from different cultures, languages and personality traits as well, recognizing their personality traits and their language learning strategy choice might be effective to help teacher design an effective teaching strategies to achieve learning objectives. This study was intended to find out (1) what personality traits Indonesian senior high school students fell into, and (2) to investigate what language learning strategies introvert and extrovert students used highly frequently. The 58 participants aged from sixteen to eighteen years old who were from the third grade of senior high school and were all from science class were given eighteen statements of McCroskey’s introversion scale to categorize them into extrovert and introvert and were administered with 32 statements of English Language Learning Strategy Inventory or ELLSI to see their learning strategy. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics in terms of mean frequencies and statistical differences. The finding revealed that majority of senior high school students majoring science study program fell into introvert with 89.6% (52 students). Besides, extrovert students used more language learning strategy highly frequently than introvert students with eight items compared to introvert students with only five items. Interestingly, both extrovert and introvert students share four strategy items in common. Although it is statistically not significant (ρ > 0.05), the finding also shows that extrovert students seemed to use affective strategy more than introverts who used memory strategy highly frequently.

Learning strategies are applied by students to improve their studies. Suitable language learning strategies result in proficiency which is improved and greater self-confidence. Most researches observe the language learning strategies without dividing which affect more between direct and indirect strategy toward learning proficiency. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out whether the direct language learning strategies had a positive relationship and significant effect toward English learning proficiency on senior high school students. An ex-post-facto method with a correlational design was applied in this research. The population was 410 students at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Baubau and selected 75 students as the sample using a simple random sampling technique. The instruments used were the SILL (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) and the English proficiency test. The results of descriptive statistics indicate the compensation strategies were the most dominant learning strategy used by the eleventh-grade students with the mean score was 2.66. Abstract This content analysis study explores the extent to which Taiwanese senior high school English curriculum and teaching materials reflect an English as a lingua franca (ELF) perspective. The background for this study is changes to Taiwanese education policy, the development of research into teaching ELF, and the vital role of curriculum and teaching materials in English language learning. Data collected for analysis include Taiwan’s 12-year curriculum guidelines for English education and the teaching materials written in line with the curriculum. These data were examined and discussed within an adapted Global Englishes Language Teaching framework, focusing on representations of targets and norms, goals and criteria, and orientation and ownership. This study shows that, despite the curricular rhetoric of recognition for variations of English, Taiwanese senior high school students are not sufficiently prepared for real-life intercultural communication or to take ownership of English. Alternatives supported by this study include (1) presenting students with diverse users and cultures of English, sources of input, and communication strategies, and (2) engaging students in experimenting with and reflecting on their language use and cultural encounters.

Experts in English Language Teaching often consider culture as the fifth skill in foreign language learning as cultural literacy is a must in 21st-century learning. Thus, this study is to investigate students’ interest in the insertion of Big ‘C’ and little ‘c’ themes from different countries into the English classroom. The study indicated that the respondents’ preferences were mostly about local culture (Yogyakarta and Indonesian culture), followed by target culture (culture of English-speaking countries) and international culture. In accordance with the cultural themes, they showed a relatively higher preference toward Big ‘C’ over the little ‘c’ culture. Concerning Indonesian culture, the students were excited in learning about art/literature, history, and food while for Yogyakarta culture includes history, foods, and lifestyles.
