The non-invasion electrical process tomography of plant tuber or root is a new research field in the accurate cultivation of plants. Tuber Electrical Resistance Tomography (TERT) is aimed to extend the application of the technology into agriculture, which can help improving and breeding new varieties of the crops. This paper mainly studies excitation & measurement strategy. Especially the influences on distribution of sensitive field brought by the width and numbers of the array electrodes in the soil environment are analyzed. Besides, the relationship between the electrical conductivity and the measured boundary voltages is also discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore gas/liquid two-phase flow is widely existed in industrial fields, especially in chemical engineering. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) is considered to be one of the most promising techniques to monitor the transient flow process because of its advantages such as fast respond speed and cross-section imaging. However, maintaining high resolution in space together with low cost is still challenging for two-phase flow imaging because of the ill-conditioning of ERT inverse problem. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, a sparse reconstruction (SR) method based on the learned dictionary has been proposed for ERT, to accurately monitor the transient flow process of gas/liquid two-phase flow in a pipeline. The high-level representation of the conductivity distributions for typical flow regimes can be extracted based on denoising the deep extreme learning machine (DDELM) model, which is used as prior information for dictionary learning. Findings The results from simulation and dynamic experiments indicate that the proposed algorithm efficiently improves the quality of reconstructed images as compared to some typical algorithms such as Landweber and SR-discrete fourier transformation/discrete cosine transformation. Furthermore, the SR-DDELM has also used to estimate the important parameters of the chemical process, a case in point is the volume flow rate. Therefore, the SR-DDELM is considered an ideal candidate for online monitor the gas/liquid two-phase flow. Originality/value This paper fulfills a novel approach to effectively monitor the gas/liquid two-phase flow in pipelines. One deep learning model and one adaptive dictionary are trained via the same prior conductivity, respectively. The model is used to extract high-level representation. The dictionary is used to represent the features of the flow process. SR and extraction of high-level representation are performed iteratively. The new method can obviously improve the monitoring accuracy and save calculation time.

Accurate multiphase flow measurement of gas/liquid, liquid/solid and liquid/liquid flow is still challenging for researchers in process tomography. The reconstructed images are poor particularly in the center area because of ill-posed inverse problems and limited of measurements data. Dual-modality tomography has been introduced to overcome the problem by means each modality is sensitive to specific properties of materials to be imaged. This paper proposed combination of ultrasonic transmission tomography (UTT) and electrical resistance tomography (ERT) for imaging two phase gas/liquid. In the proposed combination, detection ability in the medium of interest improved because two different images in the same space can be obtained simultaneously. This paper presents 3D numerical modeling approach using COMSOL software for ERT excitation strategy and electrode pre-designed geometry. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) can be implemented for gas/liquid flow if the liquid is conductive. The objectives of this work is to analyze the optimum electrode dimension and shape in order to improve the situation of: (1) gas bubble detection located in the centre of the medium, (2) potential distribution and current density in a conductive medium, the developed numerical model simulated the changes in resistivity of the conductive material, with variations of electrode sizes, with opposite current excitation implemented into the region of interest. Simulation results show that the electrode size of 12 mm (w) × 40 mm (h) is suitable, which gives a good detection of center gas bubble with diameter 10mm in 100-mm-diameter acrylic vessel. Finally the findings are verified with Image reconstruction using Linear Back Projection (LBP) which gives good indication of the 10mm gas bubble.
