In information retrieval, it is common to model index terms and documents as vectors in a suitably defined vector space. The main difficulty with this approach is that the explicit representation of term vectors is not known a priori. For this reason, the vector space model adopted by Salton for the SMART system treats the terms as a set of orthogonal vectors. In such a model it is often necessary to adopt a separate, corrective procedure to take into account the correlations between terms. In this paper, we propose a systematic method (the generalized vector space model) to compute term correlations directly from automatic indexing scheme. We also demonstrate how such correlations can be included with minimal modification in the existing vector based information retrieval systems.

This study investigated the technological developments in the shale petroleum industry by analyzing patent data using a network of technological indices. The technological developments were promoted by the beginning of the shale industry, and after the first five years, it showed a more complex development pattern with the convergence of critical technologies. This paper described progress in the shale petroleum technologies as changes in relatedness networks of technological components. The relatedness represents degree of convergence between technological components, and betweenness centrality of network represents priority of technological components. In the results, the progress of the critical technologies such as directional drilling, increasing permeability, and smart systems, were actively carried out from 2012 to 2016. Especially, unconverged technology of increasing permeability and the converged technology of directional drilling and smart system has been intensively developed. Some technological components of the critical technologies are more significant in the form of converged technology.

Smart homes that are capable of home healthcare and e-Health services are receiving much attention due to their potential for better care of the elderly and disabled in an indoor environment. Recently the Center for Sustainable Healthy Buildings at Kyung Hee University has developed a novel indoor human activity recognition methodology based on depth imaging of a user’s activities. This system utilizes Independent Component Analysis to extract spatiotemporal features from a series of depth silhouettes of various activities. To recognise the activities from the spatiotemporal features, trained Hidden Markov Models of the activities would be used. In this study, this technique has been extended to recognise human gaits (including normal and abnormal). Since this system could be of great significance for the caring of the elderly, to promote and preserve their health and independence, the gait recognition system would be considered a primary function of the smart system for smart homes. The indoor gait recognition system is trained to detect abnormal gait patterns and generate warnings. The system works in real-time and is aimed to be installed at smart homes. This paper provides the information for further development of the system for their application in the future.
