The intertidal zonation of the dominant algal species in Beer Bay, south-east Devon, was examined in relation to substratum by means of plane-table maps and transects. The dominance of Ulva lactuca on colonies of the reef-building worms Sabellaria alveolata was noted, but the distributions of Fucus vesiculosus, F. serratus, Gigartina stellata and Enteromorpha spp. showed no correlation with substratum.

Simazine [2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine] inhibited photosynthesis 50% at concentrations of 1.1 μM forSpirogyra jurgensii(Kutz), 3.0 μM forPithophora oedogonia(Mont.) Wittr., and 3.8 μM forCladophora glomerata(L.) Kutz. Photosynthesis ofAnkistrodesmus braunii(Brun.), a nonfilamentous species, was inhibited the same amount by 4.7 μM simazine. The filamentous algal species had significant reductions in growth but no other phytotoxic symptoms when exposed to 5 μM simazine at light intensities of 100 μE·m–2·s–1and below. Algicidal effects did occur at a light intensity of 400 μE·m–2·s–1and were most severe inSpirogyra.The relationship between light intensity and simazine toxicity indicates algicidal effectiveness on these filamentous algae will be limited in habitats where light is reduced by turbidity, depth, or self-shading.

Bulang districts Batam Islands of  Riau province (Riau Islands), its consists of many islands with as well as having the potential diversity of coastal marine life in particular kinds of macro algae or seaweed. Conducted research aimed to determine the structure of macro- algal communities in the intertidal zone islands. The results of the identification of algal species found 16 species are: the Order of Chlorophyceae as 6 spesies; Order Phaeophyceae as 2 spesies; and Order Rhodophyceae as 8 spesies. The community structure at the five stations showed the highest values were found in the island of dominance Cicir (D ' = 0.79) , uniformity index values on Tengah Island (E ' = 0.99) , while the island Balak had the highest diversity index (H ' = 0.88) , with the abundance patterns of population structure on the island is pretty good Central . Results of correlation analysis of regression between IVI types of algae with the conditions of environmental quality suggests that there is a significance (Fhit ˃ F table and the value of r = > 90 %) between IVI algae Halimeda sp and Cryptarachne polyglandulosa at each station with a temperature parameter surface (⁰C) , depth temperature (⁰C) and pH values. Keywords : Algae, Community Structure, Important Value Index.

This article deals with fast pyrolysis of brown algae, such as Bifurcaria Bifurcata at the range of temperature 300–800 °C in a stainless steel tubular reactor. After a literature review on algae and its importance in renewable sector, a case study was done on pyrolysis of brown algae especially, Bifurcaria Bifurcata. The aim was to experimentally investigate how the temperature, the particle size, the nitrogen flow rate (N2) and the heating rate affect bio-oil, bio-char and gaseous products. These parameters were varied in the ranges of 5–50 °C/min, below 0.2–1 mm and 20–200 mL. min–1, respectively. The maximum bio-oil yield of 41.3wt% was obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C, particle size between 0.2–0.5 mm, nitrogen flow rate (N2) of 100 mL. min–1 and heating rate of 5 °C/min. Liquid product obtained under the most suitable and optimal condition was characterized by elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, FT-IR and GC-MS. The analysis of bio-oil showed that bio-oil from Bifurcaria Bifurcata could be a potential source of renewable fuel production and value added chemicals.
