ABSTRACT. The present study investigated the role of psychological capital to affective commitment. Affective commitment is employee’s emotional attachment to, identification with, and involvement in the organization. Psychological capital is positive psychological state of development and is characterized by self efficacy, optimism, hope, and resiliency. This is the first study to examine the role of psychological capital on affective commitment by using generation Y in Jakarta as participants. They were 176 male and female employees who were varied in age, job level, employment status, tenure, educational background, and work location. Data was gathered by using two measures: psychological capital and affective commitment scale. Interestingly, this study revealed that psychological capital significantly predict affective commitment in statistical point of view but not in practical implication. Regression analysis reported that psychological capital contribute only 2% to affective commitment among Indonesian generation Y.

Keywords: affective commitment, psychological capital, generation Y

This study evaluates the role of antistripping agents to resist moisture-induced damage in asphalt binders. A total of five different types of antistripping agents are used. Plastomer and elastomer modified asphalt binders are used to modify the original base binder. Functionalized and non-functionalized AFM tips are used to determine adhesion in asphalt. With-CH3 tip, lime is found to be the most effective to protect moisture damage in asphalt binder as the adhesion loss is almost zero. The statistical tests show the Pearson values are very close to-1 that indicates a good correlation among the variables. Also the p-values are well below the prescribed value of 0.2% that indicates the test results to be significant from the statistical point of view.

Using the job-demands resource theory, the basic purpose of this article was to study the relationship between cognitive job demands, stress-related presenteeism, and procrastination. Stress-related Presenteeism is a kind of psychological state in which individuals are present at work but due to stress are not able to expend their full energies at work and remain distracted. We also tested for the combined effect of psychological capital and cognitive job demands on stress-related presenteeism. Data were collected from 192 full-time working professionals and analyzed using step-wise regression and bootstrapping. Results revealed that individuals with strenuous job demands were facing stress-related presenteeism and were involved in procrastination. Findings also supported the moderating role of psychological capital as an effective personal resource in reducing stress-related presenteeism. In the end implications for practice have been discussed.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between transformational leadership (TL) and employee engagement through the mediating role of the sub constructs of psychological capital. The article has used a single cross-sectional descriptive design. The sample consisted of 450 full-time employees working in the service sector in India. The data were mainly analyzed through structural and measurement model. The result of the study revealed that TL has an influence on employee engagement. The relationship between TL and employee engagement is mediated by sub-construct hope of psychological capital. Implication of this study is of high importance for organizations continuously working to increase the level of employee engagement to further enhance competitiveness. Prior research has examined the antecedents of employee work engagement, but little is known about the role of TL and a positive psychological state, in shaping employee work engagement. Imparting TL training and style can help to generate psychological capital which will positively drive employee engagement. Organizations with transformational leaders will be able to make employees feel valued and happy by igniting feeling of hope. The engaged workforce will result in the positive social outcome. This study is original as earlier studies have not explored the important role of hope and also optimism as dimensions of psychological capital. The article supports the critical role of leadership and psychological capital in creating highly engaged employees which have not been studied in an Indian context with specific focus to the service sector.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate antecedents of forgiveness from the non-complainers point of view after a service failure in India.Design/methodology/approachThis study bases itself on the theoretical foundations of the Cognitive Emotive Coping model. In the first study, a survey-based design was used for soliciting responses from 291 respondents. An experimental research design was undertaken in the second study, and data were recorded from 120 respondents. Data were analysed using both SPSS and AMOS.FindingsAll the antecedent variables, except, affective commitment was found to influence forgiveness significantly. Further, forgiveness also positively influenced repurchase intentions and had a negative influence on negative word-of-mouth. The findings also suggest that the service failure severity effectively moderates the relationship between empathy and forgiveness.Originality/valueThis paper extends the cognitive emotive coping model from the non-complainers point of view by adding relational constructs to it. This study observes that affective commitment is not necessarily related to forgiveness in contrast to existing literature. The relationship between empathy and forgiveness is stronger when failure severity is low.

We show that in classically chaotic systems the quantum uncertainty, in spite of being assumed to be extremely small so as to make the classical approximation possible, increases very quickly thereby making these classical systems strongly quantum. It is argued that these systems also exhibit an irreversible-like behavior, albeit the phase correlations among different regions of the wavefunction make them reversible. From a statistical point of view it is difficult to distinguish the quantum behavior of these systems from the predictions of the classical approximation, unless the resulting transport process does not essentially rest either on tunneling or on localization processes (or on both). The dinstinctively quantum mechanical features of the transport process might be destroyed by the interaction between the system and environment. This possible role of environmental fluctuations, dealt within a fully quantum formalism, is discussed.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To investigate a theoretical conceptual model for the intention of rotation, analyzing its relationship with well-being at work, psychological capital and intention of rotation. Originality/value: The study contributed to present unpublished aspects and an apparent gap in the theoretical revision of the national literature by the absence of research investigating the relations between psychological capital and intention of rotation. Design/methodology/approach: Research of empirical nature and quantitative approach. We tested four hypotheses regarding the interactions of the variables, using a self-completion questionnaire containing five validated and accurate Brazilian measures. Findings: The hypotheses were confirmed, indicating that teachers have a well-being at work composed of greater satisfactions with colleagues, managers and tasks, and minors with salaries and promotions, medium indexes of involvement with work and affective commitment to the university in which they worked, revealing a low intention of rotation. In the international literature, the concept of psychological capital arises, proposing us future investigations and creating a line of research in Brazil in the measurement of the moderating role of psychological capital in the relations between constructs of organizational behavior. It is essential that other professional categories be studied in the search for evidence about the use of psychological capital as a moderating variable in the relation between the objective dimensions of this study.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of affective well-being (AWB) in the relationship between psychological capital (PsyCap) and affective commitment. Design/methodology/approach The sample included 226 employees from diverse Portuguese organizations. Based on a survey, respondents reported their perceptions of own PsyCap, AWB and affective commitment to their organization. Findings Results from structural equation modeling suggested presence of mediation by AWB in the relationship between PsyCap and affective commitment. Practical implications Managers are encouraged to gain from this finding by emphasizing more on the emotional health of individuals to increase their attachment with the company. Originality/value Though there are several studies indicating the positive consequences of PsyCap on employees, studies on how PsyCap affects affective commitment through AWB is scarce. These results advance the broaden-and-build theory by suggesting that the relationship between PsyCap and affective commitment is much more complex.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of a second-order state-like construct “psychological capital” (or PsyCap) as an underlying mechanism explaining the personality–academic achievement (AA) relationship in the educational context. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual model was statistically tested on a sample of 305 post-graduate students at a premier business school in central India using standard measures of personality and PsyCap. AA was measured through cumulative grade point average obtained from the administrative office. Data were collected through multiple sources to minimize common method variance. Analysis was done using macro PROCESS and validated using PLS–SEM. Findings Results indicated that PsyCap positively influenced AA. Furthermore, PsyCap mediated the relationship between openness to experience, extraversion, agreeableness dimensions of student personality and AA. Research limitations/implications Longitudinal research designs with interventions to enhance PsyCap of students may strengthen the findings of this study. Practical implications The findings suggest that the curriculum in higher education institutions should include interventions on building the PsyCap of the students as it positively correlates to the AA. Academic administrators may not have control on students’ dispositional traits, but they can design interventions to improve the psychological (state like) resources of the students. Follow-up interviews with academic administrators reinforced these implications. Originality/value This study provided initial evidence that positivity, in general, and PsyCap, in particular, have a positive impact on students’ AA. This is one of the first studies to examine the role of PsyCap in personality–AA relation in the higher educational context wherein high levels of stress and burnouts have been reported by students due to high competition in achieving goals.
