Khirbet Karhasan was excavated by the British Archaeological Expedition to Iraq, as part of the Saddam Dam Salvage Project. The excavations brought to light a hoard of Middle Assyrian faience ornaments, which formed a coherent assemblage. Collections of similar ornaments are known from Assur and Nimrud where they have been variously interpreted as decorating the rich garments for a god, a divine image, and even the walls of temples. In the absence of any other persuasive view a hypothesis is advanced based on the evidence of archaeological context, iconographic associations and a viable reconstruction, that the ornaments are equally adaptable to the decoration of ceremonial horse-harness.The tell of Khirbet Karhasan is situated on the right bank of the Tigris approximately 75 km north-west of Mosul. The site on the edge of a prominent terrace overlooks a broad floodplain. In 1986, prior to the flooding of the site, the Tigris channel was 3 km north of the tell. The tell was sheltered by low hills which formed the western slope of the valley some 500 m to the south of the site. The hills rose some 40 m above the tell to approximately 50 m above the floodplain.

AbstractNew discoveries of the early Cambrian yiliangellinine trilobite Zhangshania typica Li and Zhang in Kunming preserve almost all instars from early postembryonic (protaspid) to mature (holaspid) phases in articulated state, in addition to mature specimens with antennae bearing paired spines on the basal articles. The ontogenetic series shows protarthrous development with some, but likely not all, early holaspid instars expressing additional pygidial segments, gradual rearward migration of the location of the longest pleural spines on the trunk segments, and striking positive allometry of the genal spines. It also reveals Parazhangshania sichuanensis Li and Zhang, 1990 to be the holaspid stage 3 of Z. typica, and therefore its junior synonym. This new find in the Hongjingshao Formation provides species-based regional correlation across the South China block and Z. typica may provide an important biostratigraphic marker for the base of the traditional Tsanglangpuan Stage.

As a member of the 7th Danish Peary Land Expedition in the summer of 1970 led by Count Eigil Knuth, the author had the opportunity to study a section through the Precambrian, Eocambrian and Lower Cambrian strata along the south-eastern shore of Heilprin Land (fig. 2). The main purpose was to examine the Precambrian Midsommersø dolerites (see below), and also to map the sedimentary formations of the area. This report describes the results of the mapping.

Sections and fossil collections resulting from activities under Operation Grant Land 1965-66 in the Hall Land - Wulff Land region of western North Greenland are briefly discussed. Strongly tectonised Lower Cambrian to Silurian strata are present in the northern part of the area in association with the Wulff Land anticline and the Nyeboe Land fault zone. To the south, platform and deep-water trough sequences are generally little disturbed and strata range in age from Middle Ordovician to Late Silurian (Pridoli). Most stratigraphic units can be accommodated in stratigraphic schemes established in Washington Land, to the west, or Peary Land, to the east.

AbstractThis paper comprises the first palaeontological correlation between the Upper Proterozoic–Lower Cambrian Series of Ossa-Morena, Luso-Oriental-Alcúdica and Galaico-Castellana Zones of the Iberian Peninsula.The authors show the palaeontological events on acritarchs, stromatolites, cyanophyta, soft-bodied metazoa, trilobites, archaeocyathans and skeletal microfossils from three representative sequences of the above mentioned zones and discuss the position of the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary in the sequences. The Sierra de Córdoba general Series (Ossa-Morena Zone) has an erosive discontinuity between the rocks with the first record of Cambrian metazoan activity (Skolithos sp., Monomorphichnus sp., Phycodes pedum and Rusophycus sp.) and the rocks with a palynological association (Bavlinella faveolata, Protosphaeridium flexosum, Trachisphaeridium sp., aff. Octoedryxium truncatum, Phycomicetes? sp. and cf. Ooidium sp.) which suggests a Lower–Middle Vendian age. For this reason we suggest that the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary be placed at this unconformity.The upper part of the Sierra de Guadalupe Series (Luso-Oriental-Alcúdica Zone) includes detrital beds with Phycodes pedum, Planolites sp. and Treptichnus sp. which are also the first record of Cambrian metazoan activity. In the middle part of the sequences, acritarchs attributed to the genus Micrhystridium are found at the top of the Calcareous Beds. This is taken to indicate an early Cambrian age. Vendotaenids and Bavlinella faveolata are found in abundance, thus indicating a Late Vendian age for the middle part of this unit. Thus, we propose the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary be located in the upper part of the Calcareous Beds.In the Rio Uso Series (Galaico-Castellana Zone), the Azorejo Sandstones contain Rusophycus gr. radwanskii, Planolites sp. and Gordia sp. Trace fossils produced by trilobite-like arthropoda (Monomorphichnus) have been cited in the upper part of the underlying Pusa Shales. Moreover, Octoedryxium truncatum and Bavlinella faveolata are found in the lower part of this unit which suggest that the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary could be situated in the Pusa Shales.Calcareous microfossils related to annelid polychaetes are found associated with Upper Vendian acritarchs in the Calcareous Beds of Sierra de Guadalupe. They are the oldest record of skeletal metazoa in the Spanish Series.The medusoids found are associated with a Vendian flora and they are also the oldest non-skeletal metazoa record known in the Iberian Peninsula.
